  • There are different kinds of aircrafts, such as conventional airplane, rotorcraft, fighter, and unmanned aerial vehicle. Their shape and feature are dependent upon their assigned mission. One of the fundamental analyses during the design of the aircraft is the structural analysis. The structural analysis becomes more complicated and needs more computations because of the on-going complex aircrafts' structure. In order for efficiency in the structural analysis, a simplified approach, such as equivalent beam or plate model, is preferred. However, it is not clear which analysis will be appropriate to analyze the realistic configuration, i.e., an equivalent beam or plate analysis for an aircraft wing. It is necessary to assess the boundary between the one-dimensional beam analysis and the two-dimensional plate theory for an accurate structural analysis. Thus, in this paper, the static structural analysis results obtained by EDISON solvers were compared with the three-dimesional results obtained from MSC NASTRAN. Before that, EDISON program was verified by comparing the results with those from MSC NASTRAN program and analytic solution.

  • An iterative modal analysis approach is developed to determine the effect of transverse open cracks on the dynamic behavior of simply supported pipe conveying fluid subject to the moving mass. The equation of motion is derived by using Lagrange's equation. The influences of the velocity of moving mass and the velocity of fluid flow and a crack have been studied on the dynamic behavior of a simply supported pipe system by numerical method. The presence of crack results in higher deflections of pipe. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments i.e. the crack is modelled as a rotational spring. Totally, as the velocity of fluid flow and the crack severity are increased, the mid-span deflection of simply supported pipe conveying fluid is increased. The time which produce the maximum dynamic deflection of the simply supported pipe is delayed according to the increment of the crack severity.

  • This study focuses on a simple analytical approach to calculate crane lifting forces for a sunken ship. The method takes into account the relation of lifting forces acting in wire rope slings to the inclination of the vessel including the effect of lug positions. The importance of the sunken ship salvage is explained from the statistics of ship casualties during last 15 years. Euler angles are introduced to represent the inclination of a sunken ship in developing the static force and moment equations,. Three dimensional examples with one redundant degree of freedom for a GT1500 oil tanker are analyzed and the results show that the information obtained by the method could be useful to salvors to conduct salvage work.

  • This study focuses on an analytical approach to calculate crane-lifting forces for a sunken ship, with consideration to elongation of crane ropes. The method takes into account the relation of lifting forces acting in wire rope slings to the inclination of the ship's hull, including the effect of lug positions. For lifting analysis, the Euler angles are defined to represent the inclination of a sunken ship in developing the static force and moment equations. An additional compatibility condition is introduced in order to solve an indeterminate lifting analysis problem with 4 cranes. A set of lifting forces along the 4 crane ropes is calculated. A 3-dimensional example of the G/T 1500 oil tanker is analyzed. The results show that the information obtained by the method could be useful to engineers when conducting salvage work.

  • A procedure presented in this paper generates test sequences to check the conformity of an implementation with a protocol specification, which is modeled as a deterministic finite state machine (FSM). Given a FSM, a common procedure of test sequence generation, first, constructs a directed graph which edges include the state check after each transition, and produces a symmetric graph G* from and, finally, finds a Euler tour of G*. We propose a technique to determine a minimum-cost tour of the transition graph of the FSM. The proposed technique using Multiple Unique State Signature (MUSS) solves an open issue that one MUIO sequence assignment may lead to two more edges of unit cost being replicated to from G* while an optimal assignment may lead to the replication of a single edge of high cost. In this paper, randomly generated FSMs have been studied as test cases. The result shows that the proposed technique saves the cost 4∼28% and 2∼21% over the previous approach using MUIO and MUSP, respectively.

  • The development of a finite element model for the geometric and material nonlinear analysis of bonded prestressed concrete continuous beams is presented. The nonlinear geometric effect is introduced by the coupling of axial and flexural fields. A layered approach is applied so as to consider different material properties across the depth of a cross section. The proposed method of analysis is formulated based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. According to the total Lagrangian description, the constructed stiffness matrix consists of three components, namely, the material stiffness matrix reflecting the nonlinear material effect, the geometric stiffness matrix reflecting the nonlinear geometric effect and the large displacement stiffness matrix reflecting the large displacement effect. The analysis is capable of predicting the nonlinear behaviour of bonded prestressed concrete continuous beams over the entire loading stage up to failure. Some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the proposed model.

  • The diesel pre-heater has being used in cabin heating and coolant heating of engine to reduce the engine warm up time for commercial vehicle. The pre-heaters are classified as diesel spray combustor and it forms diffusion flame. By using swirler, a recirculation flow of hot product gases is established near the fuel nozzle and it helps the maintaining of diffusion flame. The design difference of swirler can affect on reaction characteristics and temperature distribution inside pre-heater. The purpose of this study is the investigation of the effect of swirler configuration on combustion characteristics. To solve spray combustion problem, the Euler-Lagrange approach discrete model is used to track droplet trajectory and evaporation history. The PDF equilibrium model is used for chemical reaction model. These models are implemented into the FLUENT code.

  • Herein, the thermo-magneto-elastic wave dispersion answers of functionally graded (FG) double-nanobeam systems (DNBSs) are surveyed implementing a nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT). The kinematic relations are derived employing the classical beam theory. Also, scale influences are covered precisely in the framework of NSGT. Moreover, Mori-Tanaka homogenization model is introduced in order to obtain the effective material properties of FG nanobeams. Meanwhile, effects of external forces such as thermal and Lorentz forces are included in this research. Also, based upon the Hamilton's principle, the Euler-Lagrange equations are developed; afterwards, these equations are incorporated with those of NSGT to reach the nonlocal governing equations of FG-DNBSs. Furthermore, according to an analytical approach, the governing equations are solved to obtain the wave frequencies and phase velocities of FG-DNBSs. At the end, some illustrations are rendered to clarify the influences of a wide range of involved parameters.

  • In this work, a model of a functionally graded (FG) nanotube conveying fluid embedded in an elastic medium is developed based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) in conjunction with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory (EBT). The main objective of this research is to investigate the nonlinear vibration and stability analysis of fluid-conveying nanotubes. The governing equations of motion are derived by means of Hamiltonian principle. The analytical expressions of nonlinear frequencies and critical flow velocities for two different types of boundary conditions including pinned-pinned (P-P) and clamped-clamped (C-C) conditions are obtained by employing Galerkin method as well as Hamiltonian Approach (HA). Comparison of the obtained results with the published works show the acceptable accuracy of the current solutions. The effects of the power-law index, the nonlocal and material length scale parameters and the elastic medium on the stability and nonlinear responses of FG nanotubes are thoroughly investigated and discussed.

  • The establishment of a hysteretic model which can accurately predict the hysteretic characteristics of the stud connection is of utmost importance for the seismic assessment of composite structures. In this paper, the Bouc-Wen-Baber-Noori(BWBN) model was adopted to describe the typical hysteretic characteristics of stud connections. Meanwhile, the Newton-Raphson iterative procedure and the Backward Euler method were used to determine the restoring force, and the Genetic Algorithm was employed to identify the parameters of the BWBN model based on the experimental data consisting of eight specimens. The accuracy of the identified parameters was demonstrated by comparison with the experimental data. Finally, prediction equations for the BWBN model parameters were developed in terms of the physical parameters of stud connections, which provides an approach to get the hysteretic response of stud connections conveniently.
