  • Instrumental determination was performed for the analysis of residues of ethylene oxide(EO), ethylene chlorohydrin(ECH) and ethylene glycol(EG) in white ginseng powders which were deaerated for 30 min after EO fumigation. Gas chromatographic data showed that EO residues were 570 ppm in the immediate samples after deaeration and 170 ppm in the stored ones for 8 days at 30$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, respectively, showing a decreasing tendency with elapsed time. On the other hand, ECH and EG residues in samples as the secondary products of EO were 17, 650 ppm and 727 ppm stored for one month, and 9, 595 ppm and 221 ppm stored for 3 months, respectively.

  • Chitosan is known to be a good biocompatible natural polymer. Polyethyleneglycol monomethacrylates(PEGM) were grafted onto chitosan and their reaction conditions and properties of the graft polymers obtained were estimated. Using ceric ammonium nitrate(CAN) as the initiator, the optimum condition for graft polymerization was determined amount of the initiator and monomer concentrations and reaction time. Grafting yields such as total conversion, the percentage of grafting and the efficiency of grafting were calculated and examined the optimum reaction condition for high grafting yields. The percentage of grafting and total conversion were maximum at condition that the concentration of initiator was $4{\sim}5{\times}10^{-3}M$, the concentration of monomer was 0.5~0.6M, the reaction time was 2~3 hours and the reaction temperature was about $40^{\circ}C$. Thermal characteristics, solubility for chitosan solvents and inherent viscosity of synthesized graft copolymers were investigated. In high initiator concentration, characteristics of chitosan were greatly diminshed. In case of inherent viscosities, chitosan-g-PE-90 was 2.81 dl/g, chitosan-g-PE-200, 3.01dl/g and chitosan-g-PE-350, 4.93dl/g. And a tendency of viscosity increase depending on the length of ethylene oxide residue was confirmed. Degree of swelling, tensile strength, elongation of membrane prepared from graft copolymers were determined. Properties of graft copolymers were affected by percentage of grafting and length of ethylene oxides residue in polyethylene glycol monomethacrylates. Tensile strength, elongation and degree of swelling of graft copolymers were remarkably improved than chitosan. As percentage of grafting increased, the amount of drug permeation was also increased.

  • The objective of this study is to prepare an artificial extracellular matrix (ECM) for cell culture by using polymer hydrogels. The polymer used is a cytocompatible water-soluble phospholipid polymer: poly[2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC)-n-butyl methacrylate-p-nitrophenyloxycarbonyl poly(ethylene oxide) methacrylate (MEONP)] (PMBN). The hydrogels are prepared using a cross-linking reaction between PMBN and diamine compounds, which can easily react to the MEONP moiety under mild conditions. The most favorable diamine is the bis(3-aminopropyl) poly(ethylene oxide) (APEO). The effects of cross-linking density and the chemical structure of cross-linking molecules on the mechanical properties of the hydrogel are evaluated. The storage modulus of the hydrogel is tailored by tuning the PMBN concentration and the MEONP/amino group ratio. The porous structure of the hydrogel networks depends not only on these parameters but also on the reaction temperature. We prepare a hydrogel with $40-50{\mu}m$ diameter pores and more than 90 wt% swelling. The permeation of proteins through the hydrogel increases dramatically with an increase in pore size. To induce cell adhesion, the cell-attaching oligopeptide, RGDS, is immobilized onto the hydrogel using MEONP residue. Bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells (BPAECs) are cultured on the hydrogel matrix and are able to migrate into the artificial matrix. Hence, the RGDS-modified PMBN hydrogel matrix with cross-linked APEO functions as an artificial ECM for growing cells for applications in tissue engineering.

  • It was investigated that the effect of surface modification and concentration of fumed silica on the adhesion properties and thermal stability of 2-EHA/AA pressure sensitive adhesive (PSAs) prepared by UV irradiation. The influence of repeating units of crosslinking agent on PSAs were also studied. From SEM analysis, PSAs synthesized with surface modified silica had finer dispersion of silica particles in polymer matrix due to the interfacial interaction. Results of the study showed that increase in tack and peel strength when under 0.3 wt% of silane treated silica were added in the reaction mixture. The addition of PEGDMA for crosslinking agent offers positive effect on adhesion properties in comparison with PSAs using EGDMA for crosslinker, which may be attributed to high mobility of ethylene oxide repeating units in PEGDMA. From the thermal degradation residue of PSAs, it was revealed that thermal stability was improved with silica addition due to the strong interfacial bonding between silane modified silica and polymer matrix, which may act as a thermal barriers into 2-EHA/AA PSAs.
