  • For the olefin recovery from polyolefin off-gas, the permeation behaviors of olefins and nitrogen were investigated through three kinds of PDMS membranes - cross-linked PDMS membranes, a polysiloxaneimide membrane, and oligo-PDMS modified PDMS membranes. Their pure gas permeabilities were measured as a function of operation temperature(-20 to $50^{\circ}C$) and pressure(1 to 25 atm) with ethylene($C_2\;H_4$), propylene($C_3\;H_6$), butylene($C_4\;H_8$), and nitrogen($N_2$) gases. The permeabilities of olefins and nitrogen highly depended upon the nature of PDMS membranes. Among these membranes, cross-linked PDMS membranes showed stable and high olefin/nitrogen selectivities over a wide operation pressure range and further study in various test conditions. Their permeability of olefin and nitrogen were governed by the condensation temperature(solubility selectivity) and plasticization, not the order of the size(diffusivity selectivity) of gases, which matched well with the general permeation behavior of rubbery polymeric membranes for condensable and non-condensable gases. With increasing feed pressure or decreasing feed temperature, the permeabilities of more condensible olefins increase highly, presumably due to high solubility and plasticization, but that of non-condensible nitrogen decreases slightly and thus, the selectivities of olefin/nitrogen increase highly.

  • This study has been performed to develope a method for the simultaneous determination of 1,4-dioxane (DOX), epichlorohydrin (EPC), propylene chlorohydrin (PCH), ethylene chlorohydrin (ECH) and 1,3-dichloro-2-pro-panol (DCP) in polysorbates, chloline chloride, choline bitartrate, modified starch and spices by purge and trapgas chromatography. Experimental design was used to select a suitable trap by measuring the limit of detection (LOD) and to investigate the effect of temperature and salt of extraction, and the percentage of recovery in various matrix. The LOD of DOX, EPC, PCH, ECH and DCP were 1.38$\mu\textrm{g}$, 0.23$\mu\textrm{g}$, 3.30$\mu\textrm{g}$, 3.97$\mu\textrm{g}$, 20.43$\mu\textrm{g}$ respectively, by means of using Vorcarb 3000 trap with 5$0^{\circ}C$ sample sparger. Excluding EPC, the recoveries of target compounds were above 90% in all matrix. Target compounds in polysorbates (17), choline chloride (5), choline bitartrate (5), modified starch (8) and spices (25) were not detected. But 2.5 ppm of DOX was detected in Tween 80.

  • The control of the surface energy by electrohydrodynamic force provides electrospraying with various potential advantages such as simple particle size control, mono-dispersity, high recovery, and mild processing conditions. The advantages are quite helpful to improve the stability of protein drug and control its release. Herein, the nano-encapsulation of protein drugs using electrospraying was investigated. Albumin as a model protein was processed using uniaxial and co-axial electrospraying, and chitosan, polycaporlactone (PCL), and poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) were used as encapsulation materials. The major processing parameters such as the conductivity of spraying liquids, flow rate, the distance of electrical potential gradient, etc were measured to obtain the maximum efficiency. In the chitosan systems, mean particles size decreases as flow rate and the distance between nozzle and the collecting part decreases. In the uniaxial technique of the PCL systems, mean particles size decreases as flow rate decreases. In the coaxial technique of the PCL systems, it was found that the particles size gets larger under the application of the higher ratio of inner-to-outer liquid flow rates. The primary particles formed out of an electrospraying nozzle showed narrow particle size distribution, but once they arrived to the collecting part, aggregation behavior was observed obviously. Efficient nano-encapsulation of albumin with PCL, PEG, and chitosan was conveniently achieved using electrospraying at above 12 kV.

  • To produce renewable biomethane from biogas, the properties of physical absorbents such as water, methanol, 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), poly(ethylene glycol) dimethylether (PEGDME), and propylene carbonate (PC) were studied, and PC was applied to membrane contactor systems. Among physical absorbents, PC exhibited a high contact angle of $58.3^{\circ}$ on polypropylene surface, and a PC/water mixture (5 wt%) increased the contact angle to $90^{\circ}$. Furthermore, the PC/water mixture presented higher $CO_2$ absorption capacities (0.148-0.157 mmol/g) than that of water (0.121 mmol/g), demonstrating a good property as an absorbent for membrane contactors. Actual operations in membrane contactors using the PC/water mixture resulted in $CO_2$ removal of 98.0-97.8% with biomethane purities of 98.5-98.3%, presenting a strong potential for biogas treatment. However, the PC/water mixture yielded moderate improved in $CO_2$ removal and methane recovery, as compared with water in the membrane contactor operation. This is originated from insufficient desorption processes to reuse absorbent and low $CO_2$ flux of the PC/water absorbent. Thus, it is requiring optimizations of membrane contactor technology including development of absorbent and improvement of operation process.

  • Biodegradable barrier membrane has been demonstrated to have guided bone regeneration capacity on the animal study. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of cultured calvarial cell inoculated on the biodegradable barrier membrane for the regeneration of the artificial bone defect. In this experiment 35 Sprague-Dawley male rats(mean BW 150gm) were used. 30 rats were divided into 3 groups. In group I, defects were covered periosteum without membrane. In group II, defects were repaired using biodegradable barrier membrane. In group III, the defects were repaired using biodegradable barrier membrane seeded with cultured calvarial cell. Every surgical procedure were performed under the general anesthesia by using with intravenous injection of Pentobarbital sodium(30mg/Kg). After anesthesia, 5 rats were sacrificed by decapitation to obtain the calvaria for bone cell culture. Calvarial cells were cultured with Dulbecco's Modified Essential Medium contained with 10% Fetal Bovine Serum under the conventional conditions. The number of cell inoculated on the membrane were $1{\times}10^6$ Cells/ml. The membrane were inserted on the artificial bone defect after 3 days of culture. A single 3-mm diameter full-thickness artificial calvarial defect was made in each animal by using with bone trephine drill. After the every surgical intervention of animal, all of the animals were sacrificed at 1, 2, 3 weeks after surgery by using of perfusion technique. For obtaining histological section, tissues were fixed in 2.5% Glutaraldehyde (0.1M cacodylate buffer, pH 7.2) and Karnovsky's fixative solution, and decalcified with 0.1M disodium ethylene diaminetetraacetate for 3 weeks. Tissue embeding was performed in paraffin and cut parallel to the surface of calvaria. Section in 7${\mu}m$ thickness of tissue was done and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin. All the specimens were observed under the light microscopy. The following results were obtained. 1 . During the whole period of experiment, fibrous connective tissue was revealed at 1week after surgery which meant rapid soft tissue recovery. The healing rate of defected area into new bone formation of the test group was observed more rapid tendency than other two groups. 2 . The sequence of healing rate of bone defected area was as follows ; test group, positive control, negative control group. 3 . During the experiment, an osteoclastic cell around preexisted bone was not found. New bone formation was originated from the periphery of the remaing bone wall, and gradually extended into central portion of the bone defect. 4 . The biodegradable barrier membrane was observed favorable biocompatibility during this experimental period without any other noticeable foreign body reaction. And mineralization in the newly formed osteoid tissue revealed relatively more rapid than other group since early stage of the healing process. Conclusively, the cultured bone cell inoculated onto the biodegradable barrier membrane may have an important role of regeneration of artificial bone defects of alveolar bone. This study thus demonstrates a tissue-engineering the approach to the repair of bone defects, which may have clinical applications in clinical fields of the dentistry including periodontics.
