  • 초고속 인터넷 서비스가 널리 보급된 상황에서 서비스 품질과 콘텐츠의 사용 대역 증가 현상이 날로 가속화되고 있다. 이에 따라 전송속도가 거리에 제한받지 않는 광통신 기술이 품질과 대역 조건을 만족시키는 가입자 액세스망 기술로 각광 받고 있다. 현재는 점대점(point-to-Point) 광통신 기술을 이용한 광 대역서비스가 제공되고 있으나, 밀집 지역과 분산 지역 그리고 음영 지역의 각 가입자 단까지 고가의 광선로를 포설해야 하는 경제적 부담을 주고 있다. PON(Passive Optical Network) 기술은 점대점 광통신 기술에서 제기되는 경제적 비효율성을 극복하고, 더 나아가 FTTC, FTTB에서 FTTH로의 진화를 용이하게 하는 점대다점(point-to-multipoint) 광통신 기술이다. PON 기술은 ATM 기반의 B-PON(Broadband-PON) 방식과, Ethernet 기반의 E-PON(Ethernet-PON) 방식이 현재 상용화 단계에 있으며, 이 방식들은 상하향 데이터 전송을 위해 단일 파장을 사용하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 PON 기술동향 및 발전전망에 대해 알아보고, B-PON 및 E-PON 기술 분석한 뒤, 국내 환경에 가장 적합한 서비스 제공 방안을 제안하고자 한다.

  • VOD, HDTV, 라이브 스트리밍 등의 서비스가 늘어나면서 FTTH(Fiber To The Home)의 고비용과 설비문제를 해결하기 위한 대안으로 PON(Passive Optical Network)이 부상하고 있다. 가입자망의 구조가 다양하게 진화하고 광 이더넷 기술이 발전하면서 가입자에게 최적의 대역폭을 할당하기 위해 서비스별 대역폭 할당방식이 요구된다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 사용자의 대역폭 요구에 따라 OLT(Optical Line Termination)가 각 ONU(Optical Network Unit)에게 서로 다른 방식으로 대역폭을 파장별로 적절하게 할당하는 파장 다중 분할 Ethernet PON모델에서 스트리밍 서비스를 위한 모델을 제시하고 구현한다. 또한, 이더넷 지연에 대한 분석을 통해 모델의 효율성을 제시한다.

  • 최근에 VOD, HDTV, 라이브 스트리밍 등의 서비스가 늘어나면서 가입자들은 광대역 서비스를 요구하고 있다. 이를 가입자에게 제공하기 위해서는 광대역폭을 지원할 수 있는 FITH(Fiber to The Home)의 실현이 필수적이며, FTTH의 고비용과 설비 문제를 해결하기 위한 대안으로 PON(Passive Optical Network)이 부상하고 있다. PON은 네트워크를 시스템이 아닌 소자로 구성해, 일정거리까지는 하나의 광 회선을 설치하고 스플리터를 중심으로 여러 개로 회선을 분배하는 것이다. 이 또한 스플리터의 한계로 분배할 수 있는 회선이 제한적이며, 이를 해결하기 위한 방법으로 WDM(Wave-length Division Multiplexing)-PON이 고려되고 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 WDM-PON에 적용할 수 있는 Ethernet 기반의 광 송수신 채널 유닛을 설계하였다. 채널 유닛은 1000BASE-T Ethernet 신호를 입력받아 파장별 DFB-LD에 직접 변조하는 방식을 사용하여 구현하였다.

  • A Gigabit Ethernet upstream transmission over a WDM-PON employing remotely wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot lasers has been demonstrated. We have successfully demonstrated a WDM transmission of four Gigabit Ethernet channels with 100 GHz channel spacing over 30 km conventional single mode fiber. The measured f-factor was larger than 17.1 dB. We have also investigated the beating noise characteristics of a wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot laser and showed the remotely wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot laser suppresses the intensity noise of the incoherent light injected, which cause a 6.3 dB SNR improvement compared with that of the conventional spectrum-sliced light source.

  • This paper addresses the scheme for transmitting Data and TDM signals based on E-PON. E-PON technology, that combines low-cost Ethernet technology and optical fiber infra-structure, has been appeared as a solution of next generation access network. The transmission speed of E-PON is 1Gbps and symmetric in both direction, such as downstream and upstream. Therefore, it is possible to save the cost through sample network architecture, efficient operation, and low maintenance cost of optical IP Ethernet network. By adding TBMoIP(Time Division Multiplexing over Internet Protocol) module to this E-PON system, and implementing QoS(Quality of Service) control function, this system can provide data and TDM service efficiently.

  • This paper addresses the implementation of FTTH system based on Ethernet PON technololy. This system consists of OLT and ONT. OLT supports the maximum 24 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, and then has the flexibility and the scalability for supplying digital communication and broadcasting convergence service in the near future. OLT system consists of switch module, subscriber module, processor module, and E-PON link module, and has the operating system based on Linux. ONT is installed in customer premise to supply both IP-TV and Internet service. Also ONT has the dedicated interface for IP-TV to improve the transmission characteristics of IP-TV signal. We measure the performance of E-PON MAC through this system and then QoS control characteristics per franc in ONT by separating the virtual link for IP-TV from that for data.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performances of variable MAC (Medium Access Control) protocols and present an efficient MAC protocol for Ethernet PON (Passive Optical Network). We consider three MAC protocols: static TDMA, dynamic TDMA, and Interleaved polling. Static TDMA assigns an equal amount of bandwidth to all ONUs regardless of the request information but Dynamic TDMA dynamically allocates the bandwidth to each ONU considering its request. Interleaved Polling operates a cycle with variable time period and a polling method for informing a uplink transmission chance to each ONU. This paper theoretically analyzes the available bandwidth for each of three protocols. We also implement the simulation models for them by using OPNET and evaluates the performances under various bursty traffic environments. The results are compared and analyzed in terms of channel utilization and queueing delay.

  • Ethernet-PON is an emerging access network technology that provides a low-cost method of deploying optical access lines between OLT and ONUs. It has a point-to-multipoint and multipoint-to-point architecture in downstream and upstream direction, respectively. Therefore, downstream packets are broadcast from an OLT toward all ONUs sithout collision. On the other hand, since alt ONUs share a common channel, the collision may be occurred for the upstream transmission. Therefore, earlier efforts on Ethernet-PON have been concentrated on an upstream MAC protocol to avoid collision. But it is needed to control downstream traffic in practical access network, where the network provider limits available bandwidth according to the number of users. In this paper, we propose a traffic control scheme for supporting the fairness of the downstream bandwidth. The objective of this algorithm is to guarantee the fairness of ONUs while maintaining good performance. In order to do this, we define the service probability that considers the past traffic information for downstream, the number of tokens and the relative size of negotiated bandwidth. We develop the simulation model for Ethernet-PON to evaluate the rate-limiting algorithm by using AWESIM. Some results are evaluated and analyzed in terms of defined fairness factor, delay and dropping rate under various scenario.

  • EPON which is the economical technology of FTTH is being actively researched as one of next generation of subscriber configurations. EPON based on Ethernet should provide subscriber with dynamic bandwidth allocation so as to support QoS. Allocation per service in grade should be satisfied resulting from the increment of the latest multimedia application arid consumption. In this paper, New Algorithm is proposed to serve differential service on MAC protocol. The delay characteristic of packet and stability are analyzed that is shown the QoS of EPON network.

  • A new scheme for bi-directional HDTV/Gigabit Ethernet/CATV transmission over a hybrid dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (DWDM-PON) is proposed and demonstrated. It is based on injection-locked vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers and distributed-feedback laser diodes as transmitters. Services with 129 HDTV channels, a 1.25 Gbps Gigabit Ethernet connection, and 77 CATV channels are successfully demonstrated over 40 km single-mode fiber links. Good performance of bit error rate, carrier-to-noise ratio, composite second order, and composite triple beat is achieved in our proposed bidirectional DWDM-PON.
