  • In this paper, a new power spectral estimation technique is presented. At first, by transforming the original data with the Karhunen-Loeve Transform(KLT), we can reduce the amount of the redundant information. Next, by modeling the transformed data by means of the autoregressive(AR) model and then applying the least-squares parameter estimation algorithm to this model, even more accurate spectrum estimates can be obtained. The KLT is the optimum transform for signal representation with respect to the mean-square error criterion. And the least-squares method is used to overcome the inherent shortcomings of popular burg algorithm.

  • Frequency and phasor are the most important quantities in power system operation because they can reflect the whole power system situation. Frequency reflects the dynamic energy balance between load and generating power, while operators use phasor to constitute the state of system and, moreover, phasor based line relays are currently used in most power systems. So frequency and phasor are regarded as indices for the operating power systems in practice. The proposed technique is suitable for estimation near-nominal, nomina), and off-nominal frequencies. It is useful in designing microprocessor-based relays and meters that need to measure power system frequency. Performance test results, using signals from EMTP source and Excel program, indicate that the proposed technique can provide accurate estimates within 16ms. Maximum estimation errors observed during testing are of the order of 0.006Hz for nominal, near-nominal, and off-nominal frequencies. The proposed technique provides accurate estimates in presence of noise and harmonics and in case ground fault. The rate change of the phase angle is used for estimation. To confirm the validity of the proposed algorithm, the simulation studies carried out on a typical 154[KV] double T/L system by using EMTP software. Some test results are presented in the paper.

  • Frequency is an important operating parameter for the protection, control, and stability of a power system. Thus, it must be maintained very close to its nominal frequency. Due to the sudden change in generation and loads or faults in a power system, however, frequency deviates from its nominal value. An accurate monitoring of the power frequency is essential for optimum operation and prevention of wide area blackout. Most conventional frequency estimation schemes are based on the DFT filter. In these schemes, the gain error could cause defects when the frequency deviates from the nominal value. We present an advanced frequency estimation technique using gain compensation to enhance the DFT filter-based technique. The proposed technique can reduce the gain error caused when the frequency deviates from the nominal value. Simulation studies are performed using both the data from EMTP-RV software and the user-defined arbitrary signals to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Results show that the proposed algorithm achieves good performance under both steady state tests and dynamic conditions.

  • In this paper, we propose a radial reference map-based location fingerprinting technique with constant spacing from an access point (AP) to all reference points by considering the minimum dynamic range of the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) obtained through an experiment conducted in an indoor environment. Because the minimum dynamic range, 12 dBm, of the RSSI appeared every 20 cm during the training stage, a cell spacing of 80 cm was applied. Furthermore, by considering the minimum dynamic range of an RSSI in the location estimation stage, when an RSSI exceeding the cumulative average by ${\pm}6dBm$ was received, a previously estimated location was provided. We also compared the location estimation accuracy of the proposed method with that of a conventional fingerprinting technique that uses a grid reference map, and found that the average location estimation accuracy of the conventional method was 21.8%, whereas that of the proposed technique was 90.9%.

  • This paper presents the estimation on switching technique via output power source analysis of power conversion unit in electric railway vehicle. The focus of this study suggested an alternative on critical problems by using head electric power(HEP). To achieve this, we have measured output power of HEP, and measurement devices set up at output of transformer connected HEP to analysis quality on output power source of head electric power(HEP) unit in electric railway vehicle. Using results of measurement of it, parameters are assumed for simulation to confirm estimation on switching technique. It is confirmed that switching technique is Selected Harmonic Elimination PWM(SHEPWM) and inverter switching frequency is less than 500[Hz]. Throughout experiment and simulation, it is estimated that switching technique used HEP is advanced SHEPWM and switching frequency is about 300[Hz]. Also leakage inductance in transformer is about $180[{\mu}H]$ less than $365[{\mu}H]$ known.

  • In this paper, we investigate the frequency domain channel estimation for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) single-carrier frequency-division multiple-access (SC-FDMA) systems. In MIMO SC-FDMA, code-division multiplexed (CDM) pilots such as cyclic-shifted Zadoff-Chu sequences have been adopted for channel estimation. However, most frequency domain channel estimation schemes were developed based on frequency-division multiplexing of pilots. We first develop a channel estimation error model by using CDM pilots, and then analyze the mean-square error (MSE) of various minimum MSE (MMSE) frequency domain channel estimation techniques. We show that the cascaded one-dimensional robust MMSE (C1D-RMMSE) technique is complexity-efficient, but it suffers from performance degradation due to the channel correlation mismatch when compared to the two-dimensional MMSE (2D-MMSE) technique. To improve the performance of C1D-RMMSE, we design a robust iterative channel estimation (RITCE) with a frequency replacement (FR) algorithm. After deriving the MSE of iterative channel estimation, we optimize the FR algorithm in terms of the MSE. Then, a low-complexity adaptation method is proposed for practical MIMO SC-FDMA systems, wherein FR is performed according to the reliability of the data estimates. Simulation results show that the proposed RITCE technique effectively improves the performance of C1D-RMMSE, thus providing a better performance-complexity tradeoff than 2D-MMSE.

  • Video FRUC (Frame Rate Up Conversion) has been a technique of great interest due to its diversified applications in consumer electronics. Most advanced FRUC algorithms adopt a motion interpolation technique to determine the motion vector field of interpolated frames. But, in some applications, it is necessary to evaluate how well the MCI (Motion Compensated Interpolation) frame is reconstructed. For this aim, this paper proposes a distortion estimation for motion compensated interpolation frame using frame-adaptive distortion estimation. The proposed method is applied for the symmetric motion estimation and compensated scheme and then analyzed by three different approaches, that is, forward estimation, backward estimation and adaptive bi-directional estimation schemes. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed bi-directional estimation method outperforms others and can be effectively applied for FRUC.

  • This paper considers a channel estimation technique in a wireless local area network (WLAN) system with complementary code keying (CCK) signaling over multipath fading channels. This scheme uses the maximum correlator output of RAKE receiver for the extraction of the channel parameters. The performance of the proposed detection technique is compared with that of a noncoherent detection technique, and a significant improvement of performance is observed in terms of the bit error probability.

  • In this paper, we propose a new symbol offset estimation technique for an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based wireless LAN. When both inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-channel interference (ICI) do not exist in an OFDM symbol, symbol offsets cause circular shifts in the estimated channel impulse response (CIR) by the amount of symbol offset. Also, the power delay profile of a typical multipath wireless channel can be modeled by exponentially decaying function, and most energy of multipath channel is concentrated at the beginning part of the CIR. Based on these properties, the proposed symbol offset estimation technique estimates the CIR, which is circularly shifted by the amount of symbol offset, and then calculates the partial mean power from the estimated impulse response by using a moving window with a finite length. And, symbol offset can be estimated from the index of a moving window having the maximal partial mean power. The proposed technique can reduce noise effect in the process of the CIR estimation, and remove ISI and ICI using repetitive training symbol structure in time-domain for minimum training overhead. The performances of the proposed symbol offset estimation technique in typical indoor channels are demonstrated by computer simulation.

  • The motion compensated interpolation method is widely used to increase video frame rates. Especially, the bilateral motion estimation technique provides the improved results, since it doesn't make the overlapping and missing blocks in the interpolated frame. However, the motion vectors, which are obtained by the bilateral motion estimation, sometimes require further correction. In this paper, we propose the efficient motion vector.correction method for the bilateral motion estimation technique. By comparing the motion vectors of neighboring blocks and searching the new motion vector after merging the neighboring blocks, the erroneous motion vectors are efficiently corrected. It is shown that the proposed method provides better results, compared with the conventional methods.
