  • The evaluation of the electromechanical properties of HTS CC tapes is one of the foremost procedures to be done to ensure the applicability of superconducting wires to electric devices. A precise measurement of the stress and strain is important in deriving the mechanical properties under operating environment. Up to now, there is no standard test method yet for the electromechanical property evaluation of HTS tapes under self field and external magnetic field although there are already reports on the different devices used to evaluate these properties. Strain can be measured by adopting a strain gauge or a high resolution double extensometer. In this study, strain effect on $I_c$ in HTS CC tapes under magnetic fields was evaluated. Comparison of advantages and setback of strain measuring devices were discussed. In addition, a dual strain measurement system using both the SG and extensometer may be practical to lessen the burden in case one of the measuring devices does not work well.

  • In recent years, there has been growing interest in secure pairing, which refers to the establishment of a secure communication channel between two mobile devices. There are a number of descriptions of the various types of out-of-band (OOB) channels, through which authentication data can be transferred under a user's control and involvement. However, none have become widely used due to their lack of adaptability to the variety of mobile devices. In this paper, we introduce a new OOB channel, which uses accelerometer-based gesture input. The gesture-based OOB channel is suitable for all kinds of mobile devices, including input/output constraint devices, as the accelerometer is small and incurs only a small computational overhead. We implemented and evaluated the channel using an Apple iPhone handset. The results demonstrate that the channel is viable with completion times and error rates that are comparable with other OOB channels.

  • Continuous monitoring of dam performance is essential to earth and rockfill dams safety because it has to be guaranteed for safety during construction period of course and from initial impounding to a long term maintenance period of dam. Among the 31 dams managed by Kwater at present, the proportion of dams being over 20 years after completion of construction is 42% and it is estimated that the loss rate of monitoring devices will be increase as times. Monitoring devices would be impossible to repair since those are mostly installed in the dam body and foundation. If repairing of monitoring devices is possible, the expenditure will be expensive. Therefore reasonable decision making for abandonment, repair and alternation for loss of monitoring devices would be needed through the establishment of key instrument for earth and rockfill dam safety. In this study the process of monitoring for safety were modeled by failure modes of dams, adverse conditions related to failure mode, indicators of adverse condition and monitoring devices The relationship between failure mode and monitoring devices were systematically analyzed and established and evaluation technique for qualifying the importance of monitoring devices were presented.

  • Well-established standards and specifications for medical devices not only provide clarity and consistency in licensing processes but also secure device safety and effectiveness. This study reviewed regulatory standards and specifications for veterinary medical devices in Korea based on data obtained through analyses of those medical devices. General standards for electromechanical, electromagnetic, and biological safety and individual standards for 76 electric and 70 general medical device products have been established by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. However, the first standards and specifications for veterinary medical devices were established in March 2000 for two products (disposable needle and syringe). Similar to the large number of standards for medical devices, there have been general standards for safety and individual standards for 72 veterinary medical devices (27 electric medical devices, 12 non-electric medical devices, 10 medical supplies, and 23 other types) established since 2014. These new standards considered, among other aspects, the devices' applications, usage characteristics, and industrial environment. To date, the establishment of standards and specifications for veterinary medical devices remains limited. This study suggests that improvements should be made to the regulation of general and individual standards associated with various veterinary medical instruments, supplies, and in vitro diagnostic medical reagents.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to introduce newly developed cooperation group standards of acupuncture needles for single use and to make a contribution to the future development of Korean Industrial Standards (KS) of acupuncture needles for single use. Results and Conclusion: Quality assurance and quality control with high safety profile is one of the most critical issues in medical device manufacturing. Up to now, proper attention has not been paid to this issue with respect to acupuncture needles for single use and their related devices. We, therefore, organized a committee to make guidelines to produce an acupuncture needle with high quality and safety. In the committee, we reviewed the topic from an historical viewpoint, and investigated the current situation of the standardization of acupuncture needles in other developed countries. Finally, we developed the cooperation group standards in advance of development of KS on the acupuncture needles for single use. The standards are composed of 12 sections describing: Scope, Normative references, Definitions, Materials, Configuration, Appearance and Cleanliness, Quality, Sterilization and Safety, Processing of Surface and Coating Material, Test, Packaging, and Labeling. We hope that the standards would be useful guidelines to produce high quality acupuncture needles and play an important role in the development of KS in the future.

  • With the international change in the medical device market owing to the development of innovative medical engineering and the use of various raw materials, a systematic and rational medical device classification system is needed to safely manage newly developed medical devices. This study aims to improve the domestic medical device classification system by proposing product establishment and segmentation. It is based on medical device products from the United States and Europe that are only available in foreign systems and are more subdivided than domestic products. This study analyzes and compares the domestic and foreign medical device classification systems by examining laws, guidelines, and analysis reports in Korea, the United States, and Europe. In accordance with product establishment and segmentation criteria, products subject to improvement are presented. This study contributes to safely managing medical devices that do not fit with the current classification system and to solving the confusion caused by the lack of international harmony in product classification systems.

  • N-screen is a promising technology to improve support for multimedia multicasting, content sharing, content mobility, media scalability, and seamless mobility. In this paper, the WiMedia distributed-MAC (D-MAC) protocol is adopted for development of a seamless N-screen wireless service. Furthermore, to provide a multi-hop, one source multi-use N-screen service through point to point streaming in a seamless D-MAC protocol, a dynamic multi-frame transmission technology is proposed. In this technology, a dynamic time slot allocation scheme and a multi-hop resource reservation scheme are combined. In the proposed dynamic time slot allocation scheme, two thresholds, a hard threshold and a soft threshold, are included to satisfy the power consumption and delay requirements. A multi-frame DRP reservation scheme is proposed to minimize end-to-end delay during the multi-hop transmissions between N-screen devices. The proposed dynamic multi-frame transmission scheme enhances N-screen performance in terms of the multi-hop link establishment success rate and link establishment time compared to the conventional WiMedia D-MAC system.

  • The establishment of minimally invasive surgery is a complex and difficult task. Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) refers to a minimally invasive surgical technique that represents a less invasive approach to thoracic surgery using thoracoscopy. For lung cancer or esophageal cancer surgery, planning and establishing a team for minimally invasive surgery for the first time is not a simple task. Technical advances in surgical devices and the enhanced skill of surgeons are cornerstones of the development of minimally invasive surgery. Here, we review the meaning of minimally invasive thoracic surgery and discuss how to establish a team approach for VATS procedures.
