선박용 중앙냉각시스템의 해수 펌프 용량조절에 따른 에너지 절감 기법에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Energy Saving Method by controlling Capacity of Sea Water Pump in Central Cooling System for Vessel)

  • The fuel charge is getting higher in navigation cost. Therefore, shipowners try to find the method for reducing oil consumption. ESS(Energy Saving System) is one of he method. ESS is the system consisted with two inverters, ESS control unit and monitoring system. Two inverters control two main sea water cooling pumps. In the ESS control Unit, the control algorithm finds optimized point to decrease a power consumption of main sea water cooling pumps. Monitoring system observes ESS not to work improperly. ESS is experimented in the laboratory with real condition and analyzed in every view. After experiment, the result of the experiment shows that the control algorithm works correctly and safely. ESS has a plan to be operated in the ship soon. In that case, additional devices are needed to connect ESS with cooling system of the vessel. So the development of addition device is needed and being studied.

Effect Analysis for Frequency Recovery of 524 MW Energy Storage System for Frequency Regulation by Simulator

  • To test the effectiveness of using an energy storage system for frequency regulation, the Energy New Business Laboratory at KEPCO Research Institute installed a 4 MW energy storage system (ESS) demonstration facility at the Jocheon Substation on Jeju Island. And after the successful completion of demonstration operations, a total of 52 MW ESS for frequency regulation was installed in Seo-Anseong (28 MW, governor-free control) and in Shin-Yongin (24 MW, automatic generation control). The control system used in these two sites was based on the control system developed for the 4 MW ESS demonstration facility. KEPCO recently finished the construction of 184 MW ESS for frequency regulation in 8 locations, (e.g. Shin-Gimjae substation, Shin-Gaeryong substation, etc.) and they are currently being tested for automatic operation. KEPCO plans to construct additional ESS facilities (up to a total of about 500 MW for frequency regulation by 2017), thus, various operational tests would first have to be conducted. The high-speed characteristic of ESS can negatively impact the power system in case the 500 MW ESS is not properly operated. At this stage we need to verify how effectively the 500 MW ESS can regulate frequency. In this paper, the effect of using ESS for frequency regulation on the power system of Korea was studied. Simulations were conducted to determine the effect of using a 524 MW ESS for frequency regulation. Models of the power grid and the ESS were developed to verify the performance of the operation system and its control system. When a high capacity power plant is tripped, a 24 MW ESS supplies power automatically and 4 units of 125MW ESS supply power manually. This study only focuses on transient state analysis. It was verified that 500 MW ESS can regulate system frequency faster and more effectively than conventional power plants. Also, it was verified that time-delayed high speed operations of multiple ESS facilities do not negatively impact power system operations. It is recommended that further testing be conducted for a fleet of multiple ESSs with different capacities distributed over multiple substations (e.g. 16, 24, 28, and 48 MW ESS distributed across 20 substations) because each ESS measures frequency individually. The operation of one ESS facility will differ from the other ESSs within the fleet, and may negatively impact the performance of the others. The following are also recommended: (a) studies wherein all ESSs should be operated in automatic mode; (b) studies on the improvement of individual ESS control; and (c) studies on the reapportionment of all ESS energies within the fleet.

마이크로그리드에서 SOC균형을 고려한 ESS의 충·방전 전력배분 방법 (Power Allocation Method for Multiple ESS Control Considering SOC Balancing in Microgrids)

  • In this paper, multiple ESS(Energy Storage System) control strategy for microgrids is presented. Installation of ESS becomes mandatory when microgrids are used to supply high quality power to the loads. The one of main functions of the ESS is to maintain power balance. However ESS has limitation of its capacity and instantaneous injecting power. Power allocation method based on SOC(State Of Charge) of each ESS is proposed. P-Q control is employed as the basic control strategy for the distributed ESSs. By using the proposed method, the coefficients in the conventional P-Q control method are modified. The ESSs with higher SOC inject more active power, while those with lower SOC inject less, leading to more balanced SOC levels among the ESSs. The proposed method is demonstrated by simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC.

Development of the Control System for Fast-Responding Frequency Regulation in Power Systems using Large-Scale Energy Storage Systems

  • Energy storage systems (ESS) can be used to provide frequency regulation services in a power system to replace traditional frequency regulation power plants. Battery ESS, in particular, can provide "fast-responding frequency regulation," wherein the facility can respond immediately and accurately to the frequency regulation signal sent by the system operator. This paper presents the development and the trial run results of a frequency regulation control system that uses large-scale ESS for use in a large power system. The control system was developed initially for the 4 MW ESS demonstration facility in Jocheon Jeju Island, and was further developed for use in the 28 MW ESS facility at the Seo-Anseong substation and the 24 MW ESS facility at the Shin-Yongin substation to provide frequency regulation services within mainland Korea. The ESS facility in Seo-Anseong substation responds to a sudden drop in frequency via governor-free control, while the ESS facility in Shin-Yongin responds via automatic generator control (AGC).

  • Operation modes and control strategies for single-phase mobility charging station utilizing photovoltaic (PV) generation and energy storage systems (ESS) are proposed. This approach generates electric power from PV to transmit the mobility, ESS, and then transfer it to the grid when surplus electric power is generated during daytime. However, the PV power cannot be generated during night-time, and ESS and the mobility system can be charged using grid power. The power balance control based on power fluctuations and the resonant current control that can compensate harmonic components have been added to increase the stability of the system. The MATLAB/Simulink simulation was carried out to verify the proposed control method, and the 2-kW single-phase grid-tied PV-ESS smart mobility charger was built and tested.

  • Shortage of electric power occurs frequently along with increased electric power demand. ESS is a precaution to solve this issue. Household ESS has a capacity of approximately 3 kW/7 kWh. Household ESS batteries are typically designed with nominal voltages between 40 and 50 V. To connect household ESS with a 220 V AC system, low battery voltages in power conditioning system (PCS) should be boosted. To boost low battery voltage and match it with AC grid voltage, the use of a transformer for a commercial frequency can be considered. To attenuate switching harmonics of the household single-phase ESS-PCS, LC filter can be installed in two positions: on the primary side or on the secondary side of a transformer. A method has been used generally in single-phase inverters for the ESS-PCS. In another method, however, the output efficiency of the ESS-PCS may be decreased. Parasitic components of the transformer can affect voltage losses, when the square wave with the switching frequency in the ESS-PCS is passed through the transformer windings. In this work, the characteristics of the transformer according to the position of an LC filter are investigated for household single-phase ESS-PCS.

  • In this paper, a power flow control of PV hybrid module system with ESS is proposed. Photovoltaic(PV) hybrid module system is consist of individual converter, central inverter, and energy storage system(ESS). Because PV power can be changed in particular hours and environment condition, the power management control for ESS is required. In this paper, the power flow control method for PV hybrid module system with ESS is proposed. The validity of proposed control method is verified by simulations and theoretical analysis.

  • The ESS(Energy Saving System) is designed to have functions of controlling. monitoring for cooling system. etc. ESS consists of the I/O module, CPU module and Display module I/O module detects various ESS data on local area and treats signals via I/O interface system. The interface system receives various status data and outputs control signals. ESS is tested with dummy signal to verify proposed functions and is shown good results. For future study ESS will be tested under real condition in the ship.

  • Grid-connected, large-capacity energy storage systems (ESS) can be used for peak load supply, frequency regulation, and renewable energy output smoothing. In order to confirm the capability of battery ESS to provide such services, 4MW/ 8MWh battery ESS demonstration facility was built in the Jocheon substation on Jeju Island. The frequency regulation technology developed for the Jocheon demonstration facility then became the basis for the 28MW and 24MW frequency regulation ESS facilities installed in 2014 at the Seo-Anseong and Shin-Yongin substations, respectively. The operation control systems at these two facilities were continuously improved, and their successful commercialization led to the construction of additional ESS facilities all over Korea in 2015. In seven (7) locations nationwide (e.g., Shin-Gimje and Shin-Gyeryeong), a total of 184 MW of ESS had been commercialized in 2016. The trial run for the new ESS facilities had been completed between April and May in 2016. In this paper, results of the trial run from each of the ESS facilities are presented. The results obtained from the Seo-Anseong and Shin-Yongin substations during a transient event by a nuclear power plant trip are also presented in this paper. The results show that the frequency regulation battery ESS facilities were able to quickly respond to the transient event and trial run of ESS is necessary before it is commercialized.

해상운송서류 전자화에 관한 소고 - ESS-Databridge를 중심으로 - (A Study on Digitization of Sea Transport Document - Focusing on ESS-Databridge -)

  • So far several attempts have been made to digitalizing sea transport documents. Three notable examples are SeaDocs, Bolero, e-B/L Korea and Ess-Databridge. Ess-Databridge was established in 2003, with the aim of promoting the use of electronic alternative to shipping documents. The ESS-Databridge system was piloted from 2005 and went live in January 2010. The ESS-Databridge operates under a private legal outline, the Databridge Services and Users Agreement (DSUA). In the Ess-Databridge system, only the user who is in control of the original bill of lading will be able to indorse it on to another user. Once the indorsement is effected and unless the indorsee decide store turn the documents, the indorser loses control and retains access only to an electronic document marked 'copy' for its records. A feature that appears to have been crucial to the success of the CargoDocs service is that visually, e-B/Ls produced using ESS-Databridge appear identical to the paper documents. The ESS-Databridge may be even more successful if the legislators take certain steps that will increase uniformity and certainty in electronic transport documentation.
