This paper proposes the Minimum-Distance Classification(MDC) processor using the Residue Number System(RNS). The proposed MDC Processor in this paper is efficient for real-time pattern clustering application and illustrate satisfiable error rate in application experiments of image segmentation but error rate increase as cluster number do.

The purpose of this paper is evaluation of various normalization methods and fusion algorithms in addition to pattern classification algorithms for multi-biometric systems. Experiments are performed using various normalization functions, fusion algorithms and pattern classification algorithms based on Biometric Scores Set-Releasel(BSSR1) provided by NIST. The performance results are presented by Half Total Error Rate (WTER). This study gives base data for the study on performance enhancement of multiple-biometric system by showing performance results using single database and metrics.

In this paper, we proposed a method for representing local facial features based on LDP (Local Directional Pattern). To represent both PFF (Permanent Facial Features) and TFF (Transient Facial Features) effectively, the proposed method configure local facial feature vectors based on overlapped blocks for each facial feature in the forms of various size and shape. There are three advantages - it take advantages of geometric feature based method; it shows robustness about detection error using movement characteristics of each facial feature; and it shows reduced sampling error because maintain spatial information caused by block size variability. Proposed method shows better classification accuracy and reduced amount of calculation than existing methods.

Premature ventricular contraction(PVC) is the most common disease among arrhythmia and it may cause serious situations such as ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. Particularly, in the healthcare system that must continuously monitor patient's situation, it is necessary to process ECG (Electrocardiography) signal in realtime. In other words, the design of algorithm that exactly detects R wave using minimal computation and classifies PVC by analyzing the persons's physical condition and/or environment is needed. Thus, the patient adaptive pattern matching algorithm for the classification of PVC is presented in this paper. For this purpose, we detected R wave through the preprocessing method, adaptive threshold and window. Also, we applied pattern matching method to classify each patient's normal cardiac behavior through the Hash function. The performance of R wave detection and abnormal beat classification is evaluated by using MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The achieved scores indicate the average of 99.33% in R wave detection and the rate of 0.32% in abnormal beat classification error.

In this paper, a transient identification based on a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) has been suggested and evaluated experimentally for the classification of transients in the dynamic process. The transient can be identified by its unique time dependent patterns related to the principal variables. The HMM, a double stochastic process, can be applied to transient identification which is a spatial and temporal classification problem under a statistical pattern recognition framework. The HMM is created for each transient from a set of training data by the maximum-likelihood estimation method. The transient identification is determined by calculating which model has the highest probability for the given test data. Several experimental tests have been performed with normalization methods, clustering algorithms, and a number of states in HMM. Several experimental tests have been performed including superimposing random noise, adding systematic error, and untrained transients. The proposed real-time transient identification system has many advantages, however, there are still a lot of problems that should be solved to apply to a real dynamic process. Further efforts are being made to improve the system performance and robustness to demonstrate reliability and accuracy to the required level.

A new algorithm is proposed for training the multilayer perceptrion(MLP) in pattern classification problems to accelerate the learning speed. It is shown that the sigmoid activation function of the output node can have deterimental effect on the performance of learning. To overcome this detrimental effect and to use the information fully in supervised learning, an objective function for binary modes is proposed. This objective function is composed with two new output activation functions which are selectively used depending on desired values of training patterns. The effect of the objective function is analyzed and a training algorithm is proposed based on this. Its performance is tested in several examples. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed method is better than that of the conventional error back propagation (EBP) method.

In this paper, we deal with the separation of data by concurrently determined, piecewise nonlinear discriminant functions. Toward the end, we develop a new $l_1$-distance norm error metric and cast the problem as a mixed 0-1 integer and linear programming (MILP) model. Given a finite number of discriminant functions as an input, the proposed model considers the synergy as well as the individual role of the functions involved and implements a simplest nonlinear decision surface that best separates the data on hand. Hence, exploiting powerful MILP solvers, the model efficiently analyzes any given data set for its piecewise nonlinear separability. The classification of four sets of artificial data demonstrates the aforementioned strength of the proposed model. Classification results on five machine learning benchmark databases prove that the data separation via the proposed MILP model is an effective supervised learning methodology that compares quite favorably to well-established learning methodologies.

In this paper, we propose an open-loop algorithm to classify speech and music signals using the spectral flux parameters and Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients(MFCC) parameters for the audio coder. To increase responsiveness, the MFCC was used as a short-term feature parameter and spectral fluxes were used as a long-term feature parameters to improve accuracy. The overall voice/music signal classification decision is made by combining the short-term classification method and the long-term classification method. The Gaussian Mixed Model (GMM) was used for pattern recognition and the optimal GMM parameters were extracted using the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm. The proposed long-term and short-term combined speech/music signal classification method showed an average classification error rate of 1.5% on various audio sound sources, and improved the classification error rate by 0.9% compared to the short-term single classification method and 0.6% compared to the long-term single classification method. The proposed speech/music signal classification method was able to improve the classification error rate performance by 9.1% in percussion music signals with attacks and 5.8% in voice signals compared to the Unified Speech Audio Coding (USAC) audio classification method.

The classification time required by conventional multi-class SVMs(Support Vector Machines) greatly increases as the number of pattern classes increases. This is due to the fact that the needed set of binary class SVMs gets quite large. In this paper, we propose a method to reduce the number of classes by using nearest neighbor rule (NNR) in the principle component analysis and linear discriminant analysis (PCA+LDA) feature subspace. The proposed method reduces the number of face classes by selecting a few classes closest to the test data projected in the PCA+LDA feature subspace. Results of experiment show that our proposed method has a lower error rate than nearest neighbor classification (NNC) method. Though our error rate is comparable to the conventional multi-class SVMs, the classification process of our method is much faster.

A new design scheme for the fuzzy pattern matching classifier (FPMC) is proposed. in conventional design of FPMC, there are no exact information about the membership function of which shape and number critically affect the performance of classifier. So far, a trial and error or heuristic method is used to find membership functions for the input patterns. But each of them have limits in its application to the various types of pattern recognition problem. In this paper, a new method to find the appropriate shape and number of membership functions for the input patterns which minimize classification error is proposed using genetic algorithms(GAs). Genetic algorithms belong to a class of stochastic algorithms based on biological models of evolution. They have been applied to many function optimization problems and shown to find optimal or near optimal solutions. In this paper, GAs are used to find the appropriate shape and number of membership functions based on fitness function which is inversely proportional to classification error. The strings in GAs determine the membership functions and recognition results using these membership functions affect reproduction of next generation in GAs. The proposed design scheme is applied to the several patterns such as tire tread patterns and handwritten alphabetic characters. Experimental results show the usefulness of the proposed scheme.
