  • The ship radiated noise level fluctuates by the difference of interference and reverberation according to measurement methods and environmental conditions. These phenomena cause error of the source level estimation even in the same environment conditions. This paper describes a quantitative analysis and a reduction method for an error value to the source level estimation in spatial and temporal interference environment. The design criteria of the radiated noise measurement array composed of omni-directional hydrophones and the source level accuracy in the deep water range are given. The source level accuracy in the shallow water range is also derived based on the statistical model of the multiple reflection paths. The results are verified using the water tank experiment and the sea trial.

  • This paper proposes use of acoustic parameters to improve the discriminability among digit models in Korean connected digit recognition. The proposed method used the logarithmic values of energy ratio between the predetermined frequency bands as additional feature parameters, based on the acoustic-phonetic knowledge. The results of our experiment show that the proposed method reduced the error rate by 46% in comparison with the baseline system. And incorporation of channel compensation technique in the proposed method yielded error reduction of about 69%.

  • A new combined approximation method using Routh stability array and mean-square error (MSE) method is proposed for deriving reduced-order z-transter functions for discrete time systems. The Routh stability array is used to obtain the reduced-order denominator polynomial, and the numerator polynomial is obtained by minimizing the mean-square error between the unit step responses of the original system and reduced model. The advantages of the new combined approximation method are that the reduced model is always stable provided the original model is stable and the initial and steady-state characteristics of the original model can be preserved in the reduced model.

  • This paper studied the speech parameters less affected by the human emotion for the development of the robust speech recognition system. For this purpose, the effect of emotion on the speech recognition system and robust speech parameters of speech recognition system were studied using speech database containing various emotions. In this study, mel-cepstral coefficient, delta-cepstral coefficient, RASTA mel-cepstral coefficient and frequency warped mel-cepstral coefficient were used as feature parameters. And CMS (Cepstral Mean Subtraction) method were used as a signal bias removal technique. Experimental results showed that the HMM based speaker independent word recognizer using vocal tract length normalized mel-cepstral coefficient, its derivatives and CMS as a signal bias removal showed the best performance of 0.78% word error rate. This corresponds to about a 50% word error reduction as compare to the performance of baseline system using mel-cepstral coefficient, its derivatives and CMS.

  • Normally, in data transmission, extra parity bits are added to the input message which were derived from its input and a pre-defined algorithm. The same algorithm is used by the receiver to check the consistency of the delivered information, to determine if it is corrupted or not. It recovers and compares the received information, to provide matching and correcting the corrupted transmitted bits if there is any. This paper aims the following objectives: to use an alternative error detection-correction method, to lessens both the fixed number of the required redundancy bits 'r' in cyclic redundancy checking (CRC) because of the required polynomial generator and the overhead of interspersing the r in Hamming code. The experimental results were synthesized using Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA and showed a significant increase in both the transmission rate and detection of random errors. Moreover, this proposal can be a better option for detecting and correcting errors.

  • One of the maindisadvantages of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is the Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) problem. To reduce PAPR and improve the error performance of the OFDM signal over a fading channel, an OFDM system combining an Adaptive Symbol Selection Scheme (ASSS) and channel estimation can be used. Because of the side information of ASSS, however, the data rate decreases in the conventional ASSS OFDM system. In this letter, to overcome this impairment, we propose a technique to transmit side information by using pilot tones, and demonstrate that the proposed technique can give reasonable bit error rate (BER) performance.

  • In this paper, we propose the nonlinear control based on singular perturbation theory for position tracking and yaw regulation of planar motor. Singular perturbation theory is characterized by the existence of slow and fast transients in the system dynamics. The proposed method consists of auxiliary control to decouple error dynamics. We develop model reduction with control input. Also, we derIve decoupled error dynamics with auxiliary input. The controller is designed in order to guarantee the desired position and yaw regulation without current feedback or estimation. Simulation results validate the effect of proposed method.

  • This study analyzes Korean high school students' pronunciation errors in word-initial onglides in English. For this study, 24 Korean high school students read 34 English words including glide-vowel sequences in word-initial positions and vowel-initial words in a frame sentence. The results showed 2 different error types: glide deletion and vowel distortion. After the analysis of the first recording, the subjects were taught how to pronounce glide-vowel sequences properly in a 60-minute class. Comparison of the analyses of the first and second recordings showed that the subjects improved on the pronunciation of glide-vowel sequences. After the training, the pronunciation errors of diphthongs unique to English, [$j_I$], decreased substantially. However, most subjects still had difficulties in pronouncing [$w{\mho}$], [wu], and [wo]. There was no significant correlation between English course grade and error reduction.

  • Almost all companies have paid much attention to the safety management ranging from maintenance to operation even at the stage of designing in order to prevent accidents, but fatal accidents continue to increase throughout the world. In particular, it is essential to systematically prevent such fatal accidents as fire, explosion or leakage of toxic gas at factories in order to not only protect the workers and neighbors but also prevent economic losses and environmental pollution. In addition, HRA may be used to detect the human errors which may cause accidents or trace back to any mistake on the part of workers. Usually, HRA technique is used in association with other risk assessment techniques. Moreover, it can serve to enumerate the human errors which may occur during operation or down-time or correct the existing system to reduce the mistakes. This work focuses on the coincidence of human error and mechanical failure for management of human error, and on some important performance shaping factors to propose a method for improving safety effectively of the process industries.

  • In high-capacity disk drives with ever-growing track density, the allowable level of position error signal (PES) is becoming smaller and smaller. In order to achieve the high TPI disk drive, it is necessary to improve the writing accuracy during the STW(servo track writing) process through the reduction of TMR sources. Among the main contributors of the NRRO(Non-Repeatable Run-out) PES, the disk vibration and the HSA(head-stack assembly) vibration is considered to be one of the most significant factors. Also the most contributors of RRO(Repeatable Run- out) come from the contributors of NRRO which is written-in at the time of STW(servo track writing) process. In this paper, the experimental test result shows that the effect of NRRO on servo written-in RRO effectively can be reduced through a STW process under low dense medium condition such as semi-vacuum.
