  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the cardiopulmonary function and the energy metabolism of stroke patients and normal persons of graded load exercise using lower ergometer. Targeting 11 normal persons(male: 6, female: 5) and 9 stroke patients (male: 4, female: 5), an graded load exercise was performed with the use of lower ergometer by increasing 25 watts every 6 minute and Quark $b_2$ were used for the cardiopulmonary function and the energy metabolism. With respect to normal persons, there were significant increases in the phase of graded load exercise, maximum oxygen uptake time, exercise time with respect to the cardiopulmonary function. In addition, there was a significant correlation between cardiopulmonary function and energy metabolism, but there was no significant difference energy metabolism. As a result, there were no significant differences between stroke patients and normal persons of the cardiopulmonary function and the energy metabolism within 18 minutes, but it had significant differences between maximum oxygen uptake and exercise time. Moreover, it was possible to identify that the cardiopulmonary function and the energy metabolism of stroke patients and normal persons are related with maximum oxygen uptake.

  • Objective : Cardiopulmonary exercise testing in patients with heart and lung problems is used to assess functional capacity, evaluate responses to medical treatment, plan for exercise therapy, assess progression of disease process, and determine prognosis. Particularly in the patients with lung cancer, the exercise pulmonary function test gives significant physiologic assessment of the lung resection candidate. Common exercise modalities are running and cycling. Until now, the comparison of two tests mainly has been done in normal person and patients with cardiac diseases. This study is designed to compare the treadmill and bicycle exercise pulmonary function test in patients with respiratory diseases. Methods : Twenty one patients underwent a progressively incremental exercise test to the symptom-limited stage with the treadmill (Vmax29 Sensor Medics, USA) and the bicycle(model No. 2,900 Sensor Medics, USA) with 7 days apart between the two tests. Measurements were made of the metabolic, cardiorespiratory parameters, blood gases, and symptoms. Results : The results of the treadmill exercise showed significant elevation in the $VO_2$max, VEmax, and anaerobic threshold compared to those of bicycle exercise. In contrast, the results of the breathing and heart rate reserve showed the reverse. Conclusion : These results suggest that the type of exercise should be taken into consideration when interpreting exercise test in patients with respiratory diseases.

  • The purpose of this study was to elucidate incidence of $VO_2$ plateau by comparing data derived from different time averaging intervals during incremental cycling exercise to $VO_2max$. Seventeen subjects (age: $23.5{\pm}3.3$ years and $VO_2max$: $3.65{\pm}0.73$ L/min, respectively) completed $VO_2max$ tests on cycle ergometer which breath by breath gas ex-change data were obtained. These data were time-averaged into 11-breath, 15, 30 and 60 s sampling intervals. The incidence of plateau were 100, 35, 24 and 6% for the 11 breath, 15 s, 30 s and 60 s averaging, respectively. No correlation was between ${\Delta}$ $VO-2$ at $VO_2max$ and $VO_2max$ (r=0.008). 53% (maximal HR within 10 b/min) and 100% $(RER{\geq}1.15)$ of subjects met the criteria for attainment of $VO_2max$. This data indicate that shorter sampling intervals (11 breath) is the most suitable for de-tection of the $VO_2$ plateau and RER can be used for the criteria for attainment of $VO_2max$ but not maximal HR. Also, the incidence of a plateau is not related to training status or physical fitness of subjects.

  • Purpose: The talk test (TT) is an alternative, self-reported method for prescribing and guiding exercise training in both healthy adults and patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. This study examined whether the TT is a valid tool for evaluating the exercise intensity during two different types of aerobic activity on a treadmill or stationary bicycle in a healthy population. Methods: A total of ten subjects (six males and four females) who had no medical history related to musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and pulmonary disorders were enrolled in this study. They were evaluated using the TT, which consisted of three-level of difficulties demanding cardiac loads while performing aerobic activities on a treadmill and bicycle ergometer across two consecutive days in a counterbalanced manner. During the activities, the psychophysiological response markers were collected in terms of the heart rate, oxygen saturation, rating of perceived exertion, and metabolic equivalents. Results: Statistical analyses revealed a significant difference in the between-subject variance regarding the TT level effect (p<0.05). On the other hand, no significant findings were detected on the between-group variance(p>0.05) and the TT level×group interaction (p>0.05). The independent t-test indicated no significant differences in heart rate, oxygen saturation, rating of perceived exertion, and metabolic equivalents at any levels of the TT in the two groups. The TT showed a strong correlation with the rating of perceived exertion. Conclusion: This study showed that the TT is a valid and alternative tool for evaluating the aerobic exercise intensity in a healthy population. In addition, differences in the psychophysiological response markers between two aerobic activities, treadmill and bicycle ergometer, were detected in the same exercise intensity scaled with the TT. The TT can be used to evaluate and prescribe the exercise intensity of aerobic activity in cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the exercise effect of two types of training with a recumbent cycle ergometer on ankle muscle strength (dorsiflexor strength, DFS; dorsiflexor strength/weight, DFS/kg; plantar flexor strength, PFS; and plantar flexor strength/weight, PFS/kg) in healthy male subjects. Methods: Twenty-three healthy males (27.91±8.66 yr) were randomly allocated into two groups (high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and aerobic exercise training (AET) after the first measurement. The subjects were trained for 24 sessions (40 min/rep, three times/week) and ankle strength was measured for a second time. Two-way mixed model analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to identify significant differences between changes in ankle muscle strength between before and after training (within factors) in the HIIT and AET groups (between factors). The statistical significance level was set at α=0.05. Results: In both HIIT and AET groups, all variables of ankle muscle strength were significantly increased after training compared to before training (p=0.001). However, there were no differences in all variables of ankle strength between the HIIT and AET group (p>0.05). Conclusion: Both types (HIIT and AET) of recumbent cycle exercise training could be effective training methods to increase ankle muscle strength in healthy individuals, and the HIIT type with high intensity and low frequency pedaling could be recommended more to strengthen ankle muscles.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of Exercise on inhibition Blood pressure by Auricular-plaster Vaccaria seeds Methods : This study picked 40 peoples from 20 May 2009 to 30 June 2009 and experiment them. Attached Vaccaria seeds to auricular acupuncture of the experiment group. Did not attach them to the control group. Them to exercise using a Bike-Ergometer exercise. I measured their blood pressure before the exercise, 15 minutes after the exercise and 30 minutes after the exercise. I compared the difference between the systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. The method to choose the subjects was Random allocation. Results : 1. Comparing the systolic blood pressure of the experiment group and the control group, the average systolic blood pressure of the experiment group, who did the Bike-Ergometer exercise putting on Auricular-plaster Vaccaria seeds, was 125.45 mmHg before the exercise, 121.20 mmHg 15 minutes after the exercise and 120.30 mmHg 30 minutes after the exercise. Terefore, the group's systolic blood pressure after the exercise was more controlled than the systolic blood pressure before the exercise. The control group's systolic blood pressure increased compared to the beginning. To measure the change before and after the exercise, I carried out paird-t test. The result was statistically significant. 2. Comparing the diastolic blood pressure of the experiment group and the control group, the average diastolic blood pressure of the experiment group, who did the Bike-Ergometer exercise putting on Auricular-plaster Vaccaria seeds, was 81.45 mmHg before the exercise, 79.65 mmHg 15 minutes after the exercise and 79.05 mmHg 30 minutes after the exercise. As a result of carrying out paird-t test to measure the change of the diastolic blood pressure, the change of the dilating blood pressure was statistically significant. However, the difference of the dilating blood pressure between 15 minutes after the exercise and 30 minutes after the exercise was not statistically significant. Comparing the systolic blood pressure and the diastolic blood pressure of the experiment group and the control group, the blood pressure of the experiment group, who did the Bike-Ergometer exercise putting on Auricular-plaster Vaccaria seeds, decreased compared to the beginning and the blood pressure of the control group, who did not put on Auricular-plaster Vaccaria seeds, increased compared to the beginning. Conclusions : The hypothesis was supported that the increase of the systolic and diastolic blood pressure of the experiment group, putting on Auricular-plaster Vaccaria seeds, was more controlled than that of the control group. In future, it can be medically used by verifying the various effects through repeated studies.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the possibility of identifying joint damping property through commercially available isokinetic ergometer (BIODEX). The proposed method is to estimate the damping torque of the knee joint from the difference between the external joint torque for maintaining isokinetic movement and the gravity torque of the lower leg. The damping torque was estimated at various joint angular velocities, from which the damping property would be derived. Measurement setup was composed of the BIODEX system with an external force sensor and Labview system. Matlab was used in the analysis of the damping property. The experimental result showed that the small variation in angular velocity due to acceleration and deceleration of the crank arm resulted in greater change of inertial torque than the damping torque, so that the estimation of damping property from the isokinetic movement is difficult.
