This paper presents a technique to control a robot which has a flexible manipulator moving in a vertical plane. The flexible manipulator is modeled as an Euler-Bernoulli beam. Elastic deformation is represented using the assumed modes method. A comparison function which satisfies all geometric and natural boundary conditions of a cantilever beam with an end mass is used as an assumed mode shape. Lagrange's equation is utilized for the development of a discretized model. A control algorithm is developed using a simple PID control technique. The proportional, integral and derivative control gains are determined based on the dominant pole placement method and tuned to show no overshoot and having a short settling time. The effectiveness of the developed control scheme is showed experimentally. In the position control experiment, three different end masses are used. The experimental results shows little overshoot, no steady state error, and less than 2.5 second settling time in case of having an end mass which is equivalent to 45% of the total system weight. Also the residual vibration of the end point is effectively controlled.
The optimal design of multiple tuned mass dampers (multiple TMD's) to suppress multi-mode structural response of beams and floor structures was investigated. A new method using a numerical optimizer, which can effectively handle a large number of design variables, was employed to search for both optimal placement and tuning of TMD's for these structures under wide-band loading. The first design problem considered was vibration control of a simple beam using 10 TMD's. The results confirmed that for structures with widelyspaced natural frequencies, multiple TMD's can be adequately designed by treating each structural vibration mode as an equivalent SDOF system. Next, the control of a beam structure with two closely-spaced natural frequencies was investigated. The results showed that the most effective multiple TMD's have their natural frequencies distributed over a range covering the two controlled structural frequencies and have low damping ratios. Moreover, a single TMD can also be made effective in controlling two modes with closely spaced frequencies by a newly identified control mechanism, but the effectiveness can be greatly impaired when the loading position changes. Finally, a realistic problem of a large floor structure with 5 closely spaced frequencies was presented. The acceleration responses at 5 positions on the floor excited by 3 wide-band forces were simultaneously suppressed using 10 TMD's. The obtained multiple TMD's were shown to be very effective and robust.
Unbonded Post-Tensioned (UPT) precast concrete systems have been shown to provide excellent seismic resistance. In order to improve understanding of the dynamic response of UPT systems, a series of snap back tests on four UPT systems was undertaken consisting of one Single Rocking Wall (SRW) and three Precast Wall with End Columns (PreWEC) systems. The snap back tests provided both a static pushover and a nonlinear free vibration response of a system. As expected the SRW exhibited an approximate bi-linear inertia force-drift response during the free vibration decay and the PreWEC walls showed an inertia force-drift response with increased strength and energy dissipation due to the addition of steel O-connectors. All walls exhibited negligible residual drifts regardless of the number of O-connectors or the post-tensioning force. When PreWEC systems of the same strength were compared the inclusion of further energy dissipating O-connectors was found to decrease the measured peak wall acceleration. Both the local and global wall parameters measured at pseudo-static and dynamic loading rates showed similar behaviour, which demonstrates that the dynamic behaviour of UPT walls is well represented by pseudo-static tests. The SRW was found to have Equivalent Viscous Damping (EVD) between 0.9-3.8% and the three PreWEC walls were found to have maximum EVD of between 14.7-25.8%.

This paper presents design of the quantitative feedback control system of the three axes hydraulic road simulator with respect to the dummy wheel for uncertain multiple input-output(MIMO) feedback systems. This simulator has the uncertain parameters such as fluid compressibility, fluid leakage, electrical servo components and nonlinear mechanical connections. This works have reproduced the random input signal to implement the real road vibration's data in the lab. The replaced $m^2$ MISO equivalent control systems satisfied the design specifications of the original $m^*m$ MIMO control system and developed the mathematical method using quantitative feedback theory based on schauder's fixed point theorem. This control system illustrates a tracking performance of the closed-loop controller with low order transfer function G(s) and pre-filter F(s) having the minimum bandwidth for parameters of uncertain plant. The efficacy of the designed controller is verified through the dynamic simulation with combined hydraulic model and Adams simulator model. The Matlab simulation results to connect with Adams simulator model show that the proposed control technique works well under uncertain hydraulic plant system. The designed control system has satisfied robust performance with stability bounds, tracking bounds and disturbance. The Hydraulic road simulator consists of the specimen, hydraulic pump, servo valve, hydraulic actuator and its control equipments

Based on the theory of porous media, an interaction system of a floating pile and a saturated soil in cylindrical coordinates subjected to vertical harmonic load is presented in this paper. The surrounding soil is separated into two distinct layers. The upper soil layer above the level of pile base is described as a saturated viscoelastic medium and the lower soil layer is idealized as equivalent spring-dashpot elements with complex stiffness. Considering the cylindrically symmetry and the pile-soil compatibility condition of the interaction system, a frequency-domain analytical solution for dynamic impedance of the floating pile embedded in saturated viscoelastic soil is also derived, and reduced to verify it with existing solutions. An extensive parametric analysis has been conducted to reveal the effects of the impedance of the lower soil base, the interaction coefficient and the damping coefficient of the saturated viscoelastic soil layer on the vertical vibration of the pile-soil interaction system. It is shown that the vertical dynamic impedance of the floating pile significantly depends on the real stiffness of the impedance of the lower soil base, but is less sensitive to its dynamic damping variation; the behavior of the pile in poro-visco-elastic soils is totally different with that in single-phase elastic soils due to the existence of pore liquid; the effect of the interaction coefficient of solid and liquid on the pile-soil system is limited.

This study presents key parameters for the structure installed with MR controller in reducing its responses. MR controller is regarded as Bingham model of which control forces are frictional and viscous ones. The parameters are identified as friction force ratios, $R_f$ and $R_h$ which are, respectively, ratio of MR controller friction force to static restoring force for free vibration and ratio of the friction force to amplitude of harmonic force. Structure-MR controller system shows nonlinear response behavior due to friction force. Energy balance strategy is adopted to transform the behavior to linear one with equivalent damping ratio. Finally, proposed equivalent linear process is compared to the nonlinear one, which turns out to give acceptably good results.
This study pertains to damping device to reduce vibrational responses and shocks in multi-directions. To enhance the capability of disk spring damper which works for vertical vibration and shock, a multi-directional damper is proposed, which contains wedge system as well as disk spring stack. Wedge system converts horizontal load into vertical load. A mathematical model is proposed and investigated for the nonlinear behaviors of the disc spring damper containing wedge system. The results accord with the experimental results. Equivalent viscous damping in vertical and horizontal directions are found based upon energy dissipated.

The surface, generated by end milling operation, is deteriorated by tool runout, vibration, friction, tool deflection, etc. In many source, deflection of tool affects to surfave accuracy. To develop a surface accracy model, method for the prediction of the topography of machined surfaces has been developed based on models of machine tool kinematics and cutting tool geometry. This model accounts for not only the ideal geometrical surface, but also the deflection of tool resulted in cutting force. For the more accurate prediction of cutting force, flexible end mill model is used to simulate cutting process. Compute simu;ation have shown the feasibility of the surface generation system.

This paper is described a development of an optical fiber displacement sensor. The optical fiber sensor using an intensity modulated measures the displacement between target and sensor. A prototype sensor is composed of a transmitting part, a receiving part and a signal processing circuit. The experiment was conducted not only the sensor performance but also factors that affect intensity. The main performance of this sensor is resolution of 0.37um and the non-linearity $0.7\%$ FS and the dynamic bandwidth of about 6.3kHz. As a result of rotation test, the prototype sensor showed an equivalent performance to a commercial eddy current sensor.
The thermal system like a combustion chamber is believed to experience a significant instability problem with vibration in case that the thermal energy or the acoustic energy are transformed into a different form through a relevant path. This study deals with a numerically- predicted, Thermoacoustic instability in a Rijke tube by using a non-linear model for a heat source. The heating part where the energy transformation occurs actively is modeled after simulating two-dimensional cylinder case with constant surface temperature, and a nonlinear model that accounts for the transfer function of magnitude- and phase-characteristics is properly implemented so as to be dependent on the pulsation strength in the tube. The heat source model is observed to result in equivalent Thermoacoustic instabilities in the Rijke tube except low flow-rate cases in which the natural convection is dominant.
