The tuned liquid damper (TLD) is increasingly being used as an economical and effective vibration absorber. It consists of a water tank having the fundamental sloshing fluid frequency tuned to the natural frequency of the structure. In order to perform efficiently, the TLD must possess a certain amount of inherent damping. This can be achieved by placing screens inside the tank. The current study experimentally investigates the behaviour of a TLD equipped with damping screens. A series of shake table tests are conducted in order to assess the effect of the screens on the free surface motion, the base shear forces and the amount of energy dissipated. The variation of these parameters with the level of excitation is also studied. Finally, an amplitude dependent equivalent tuned mass damper (TMD), representing the TLD, is determined based on the experimental results. The dynamic characteristics of this equivalent TMD, in terms of mass, stiffness and damping parameters are determined by energy equivalence. The above parameters are expressed in terms of the base excitation amplitude. The parameters are compared to those obtained using linear small amplitude wave theory. The validity of this nonlinear model is examined in the companion paper.

Using magnetorheological (MR) dampers in multiswitch open-loop control mode has been shown to be cost-effective for cable vibration mitigation. In this paper, a method for analyzing the damping performance of taut cables incorporating MR dampers in open-loop control mode is developed considering the effects of damping coefficient, damper stiffness, damper mass, and stiffness of the damper support. Making use of a three-element model of MR dampers and complex modal analysis, both numerical and asymptotic solutions are obtained. An analytical expression is obtained from the asymptotic solution to evaluate the equivalent damping ratio of the cable-damper system in the open-loop control mode. The individual and combined effects of the damping coefficient, damper stiffness, damper mass and stiffness of damper support on vibration control effectiveness are investigated in detail. The main thrust of the present study is to derive a general formula explicitly relating the normalized system damping ratio and the normalized damper parameters in consideration of all concerned effects, which can be easily used for the design of MR dampers to achieve optimal open-loop vibration control of taut cables.
The study of the seismic vulnerability of masonry buildings requires structural properties of walls such as stiffness, ultimate load capacity, etc. In this article, a method is suggested for modeling the masonry walls under in-plane loading. At the outset, a set of analytical equations was established for determining the elastic properties of an equivalent homogeneous material of masonry. The results for homogenized unreinforced brick walls through detailed modeling were compared in different manners such as solid and perforated walls, in-plane and out-of-plane loading, etc, and it was found that this method provides suitable accuracy in estimation of the wall linear properties. Furthermore, comparison of the results of proposed modeling with experimental out coming indicated that this model considers the non linear properties of the wall such as failure pattern, performance curve and ultimate strength, and would be appropriate to establish a parametric study on those prone factors. The proposed model is complicated; therefore, efforts need to be made in order to overcome the convergency problems which will be included in this study. The nonlinear model is basically semi-macro but through a series of actions, it can be simplified to a macro model.
In this paper the geometrically nonlinear continuum plate finite element model, hitherto not reported in the literature, is developed using the total Lagrange formulation. With the layerwise displacement field of Reddy, nonlinear Green-Lagrange small strain large displacements relations (in the von Karman sense) and linear elastic orthotropic material properties for each lamina, the 3D elasticity equations are reduced to 2D problem and the nonlinear equilibrium integral form is obtained. By performing the linearization on nonlinear integral form and then the discretization on linearized integral form, tangent stiffness matrix is obtained with less manipulation and in more consistent form, compared to the one obtained using laminated element approach. Symmetric tangent stiffness matrixes, together with internal force vector are then utilized in Newton Raphson's method for the numerical solution of nonlinear incremental finite element equilibrium equations. Despite of its complex layer dependent numerical nature, the present model has no shear locking problems, compared to ESL (Equivalent Single Layer) models, or aspect ratio problems, as the 3D finite element may have when analyzing thin plate behavior. The originally coded MATLAB computer program for the finite element solution is used to verify the accuracy of the numerical model, by calculating nonlinear response of plates with different mechanical properties, which are isotropic, orthotropic and anisotropic (cross ply and angle ply), different plate thickness, different boundary conditions and different load direction (unloading/loading). The obtained results are compared with available results from the literature and the linear solutions from the author's previous papers.
In order to get a better understanding of seismic performance of exterior beam-column joint, reciprocating loading tests with variable loading speeds or axial forces were carried out. The main findings indicate that only few cracks exist on the surface of the joint core area, while the plastic hinge region at the beam end is seriously damaged. The damage of the specimen is more serious with the increase of the upper limit of variable axial force. The deflection ductility coefficient of specimen decreases to various degrees after the upper limit of variable axial force increases. In addition, the higher the loading speed is, the lower the deflection ductility coefficient of the specimen is. The stiffness of the specimen decreases as the upper limit of variable axial force or the loading speed increase. Compared to the influence of variable axial force, the influence of the loading speed on the stiffness degradation of the specimen is more obvious. The cumulative energy dissipation and the equivalent viscous damping coefficient of specimen decrease with the increase of loading speed. The influence of variable axial force on the energy dissipation of specimen varies under different loading speeds. Based on the truss model, the biaxial stress criterion, the Rankine criterion, the Kent-Scott-Park model, the equivalent theorem of shearing stress, the softened strut-and-tie model, the controlled slip theory and the proposed equations, a calculation method for the shear capacity is proposed with satisfactory prediction results.
The component method is an analytical approach for investigating the moment-rotation relationship of steel connections. In this study, the component method was improved from two aspects: (i) load analysis of mechanical model; and (ii) combination of spring elements. An optimized component method with more reasonable component models, spring arrangement position, and boundary conditions was developed using finite element analysis. An experimental testing program in two major-axis and two minor-axis connections under symmetrically loading was carried out to verify this method. The initial rotational stiffness obtained from the optimized component method was consistent with the experimental results. It can be concluded that (i) The coupling stiffness between column and beam flanges significantly affects the effective height of the tensile-column web. (ii) The mechanical properties of the bending components were obtained using an equivalent t-stub model considering the bending capacity of bolts. (iii) Using the optimized mechanical components, the initial rotational stiffness was accurately calculated using the spring system. (iv) The characteristics of moment-rotation relationship for beam to column connections were effectively expressed by the SPRING element analysis model using ABAQUS. The calculations are simpler, and the results are accurate.
A new reinforcing steel model which is embedded inside a concrete element and also accounts for the effect of bond-slip is developed. Unlike the classical bond-link or bond-zone element using double nodes, the proposed model is considering the bond-slip effect without taking double nodes by incorporation of the equivalent steel stiffness. After calculation of nodal displacements, the deformation of steel at each node can be found through the back-substitution technique from the first to the final steel element using a governing equation constructed based on the equilibrium at each node of steel and the compatibility condition between steel and concrete. This model results in significant savings in the number of nodes needed to account for the effect of bond-slip, in particular, when the model is used for three dimensional finite element problems. Moreover a new nonlinear solution scheme is developed in connection with this model. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results and several parameter studies are conducted with the objective to establish the validity of the proposed model.
As design trends has changed to have flexible aft hull structure, increased power output and stiffer shafting system, owners and classification societies have more concerned about shaft alignment. In the shaft alignment analysis, there are many uncertainties which are related in propeller generated force, bearing stiffness, crank shaft model and etc. in this study, it is focused on the effect of crankshaft model by comparing between equivalent model and actual crankshaft model.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the dynamic behavior of highway bridge due to moving vehicle load, considering the effect of laminated rubber bearing. Dynamic behaviors of bridge considering the effect of bearings are studied with 3-dimensional bridge and vehicle models. To analyze the effect of bearings on the dynamic behaviors of superstructures of bridges, laminated rubber bearing is modeled as 3-dimensional frame element with equivalent stiffness and damping, and the models are included in the bridge analysis model. The results from the analytical models with laminated rubber bearing show a significant effects on dynamic responses and more complex vibration characteristics compared with the results from the bridge with pot bearings. Generally, larger dynamic amplification factors are obtained in the case of laminated rubber bearing, which is mainly due to the smaller torsional stiffness of the bridge with laminated rubber bearing. It can be recommended that were careful consideration on the vibration of bridges and dynamic load allowance in design are needed when adopting laminated rubber bearing.
The earthquake-resistant structural systems have to ensure the sufficient stiffness and ductility for the stability For those purposes, recently, the seismic isolation system to reduce earthquake energy has been used. So, it is necessary to examine the characteristics of dynamic behavior of spatial structures governed by higher modes rather than lower modes different from the cases of high rise buildings. The objectives of this paper are to inspect the efficiency of the equivalent model method according to the various earthquake loads and half-open angles. Moreover it is examined the dynamic behaviors according to change the mass and the stiffness of sub-structures as a fundamental study of performance design for the spatial structures. Finally, seismic isolation system is applied to boundary parts of roof system and sub-structure to obtain the target performance.
