  • The thermo-acoustic instability in the combustion process of a gas turbine is caused by the interaction of the heat release mechanism and the pressure perturbation. These acoustic vibrations cause fatigue failure of the combustor and decrease the combustion efficiency. This study is to develop a segmented dynamic thermo-acoustic model to understand combustion instability of gas turbine. Therefore, this study required a dynamic analysis rather than static analysis, and developed a segmented model that can analyze the performance of the system over time using the Matlab/Simulink. The developed model can confirm the thermo-acoustic combustion instability and exhaust gas concentration in the combustion chamber according to the equivalent ratio change, and confirm the thermo-acoustic combustion instability for the inlet temperature and the load changes. As a result, segmented dynamic thermo-acoustic model has been developed to analyze combustion instability under the operating condition.

  • In this study, the leak-free performance and sealing endurance safety of CNG fueling nipple in which are related to the contact normal stress and equivalent true stress have been analyzed for CNG automobile using a finite element analysis. For the conventional circular o-rings and new double-lip o-rings with an initial compression rate of 15 percentages, the leak-free performance of double-lip o-rings with two contact sealing spots is 41% higher than that of the conventional circular o-rings with a contact sealing spot. The FEM computed results present that the leak-free endurance safety of double-lip o-rings with two contact sealing spots is 5% higher than that of the conventional circular o-rings for initial compression ratio of 15 percentages and a gas compression pressure of 8MPa. And, the maximum equivalent true stress of double-lip o-rings is 10.2% higher than that of the conventional circular o-rings for the leak-free endurance safety. This means that the double-lip o-ring may guarantee the extended sealing life compared to that of a conventional circular o-ring.

  • Three-dimensional finite-element methods(FEM) have been used to analyze the thermal stress of an exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) cooler due to thermal and pressure load. Since efficiency and capability of the heat exchanger are mainly dependent on net heat transferring area of the EGR cooler system, the tube inside the system has a numerous dimples on the surface. Thus for finite element analysis, firstly the dimple-typed tube is modeled as a plain element without the dimple, and then the equivalent thermal conductivities and elastic modulus are calculated. This work describes the numerical homogenization procedure of the dimple-typed tube and verifies the equivalent material properties by comparison of a single unit and the actual full model. Finally, the homogenization scheme presented in this study can be efficiently applied to finite element analyses for the thermal stress and deformation behavior of the EGR cooler system with the dimple-typed tube.

  • In order to reduce NOx emissions in the 20kW class microturbine under development, the low NOx characteristics, as being an application to the lean premixed combustion technology, have been investigated. The study has been conducted at the conditions of high temperature and high pressure. Theair from a compressor with the pressure of 2.5bar, 3.0bar, 3.5bar was supplied to the combustor with the temperature 560K through the air preheat-treatment. The sampling exhaust gas was measured at the immediate exit of the combustor. For the effect of temperature on NO and CO emissions, though NOx were increased, CO was decreased with increasing inlet air temperature. With increasing inlet air pressure, NOx were increased and CO was decreased also. NOx were decreased, but CO was increased with increasing inlet air mass flow rate. The test has been performed on the equivalent ratio of 0.10 to 0.16 in the lean region. NOx were increased with increasing equivalent ratio, but CO was decreased as an influence of flame temperature. CFD work with an appropriate combustion model predicated a complicated swirling flow pattern in the combustor, and also produced a numerical value of NOx and CO emissions which was to be compared with the experimental one. As the results of this study, NOx are expected to be reduced to less than 42ppm at 15% O2 when operated at the design condition of the 20kW class microturbine.

  • Recently the Korean government announced its decision to select the $3^{rd}$ proposal, which targets reducing $CO_2$ by 37% of the BAU level by 2030, for the Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC). According to this proposal, natural gas (or equivalent gas) combined cycle (NGCC) are suggested as alternatives for conventional pulverized coal (PC). In this study, we analyzed the environmental, economic, and energy mixing aspects of synthetic natural gas combined cycle(SNGCC) using NETL material (2011~2012 version) and other domestic materials (2014 version). We found the following conclusions: 1) Considering carbon capture and storage (CCS) integration, $CO_2$ emission factors of SNGCC and supercritical PC are the same. However, 60% of $CO_2$ from SNGCC is produced as high pressure and high purity (99%) gas, making it highly suitable for CCS, which is now strongly supported by the government. 2) Based on the economic analysis for SNGCC using domestic materials and comparison with NGCC, it was found that the settlement price of SNGCC was 30% lower than that of NGCC.

  • The internal pressure is a critical parameter for designing a pressure vessel. The static pressure that a pressure vessel must withstand is usually determined according to the various codes and standards with simple formula or numerical simulations considering the geometric parameters such as diameter and thickness of a vessel. However, there is no specific codes or technical standards we can use practically for designing of pressure vessels which have to endure the detonation pressure. Detonation pressure is a kind of dynamic pressure which causes an impulsive pressure on the vessel wall in a extremely short time duration. In addition, it is known that the magnitude of reflected pressure at the vessel wall due to the explosion can be over twice the incident pressure. Therefore, if we only consider the reflected pressure, the design of the pressure vessel can be too conservative from the economical point of view. In this study, we suggest a practical method to evaluate the magnitude of maximum allowable pressure that the pressure vessel can withstand against the detonation inside a vessel. As an example to validate the proposed method, we consider the pressure vessel containing hydrogen gas.

  • Sour gas is natural gas or any other gas containing significant amounts of hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$). Natural gas is usually considered sour gas if there are more than 5.7 milligrams of $H_2S$ per cubic meter of natural gas, which is equivalent to approximately 4 ppm by volume under standard temperature and pressure We have surveyed on the treatment and removal technology of sour gas, sour gas include a lot of hydrogen sulfide($H_2S$), Carbon dioxide($CO_2$), utane($C_4H_{10}$) and mercaptan($C_nH_{4n-1}SH$) etc. We need high technology for development for these kinds of raw gases and we should specially take care of treating and removal of theses raw gases. Therefor we are going to describe about these kinds of raw gases and about methods how to treat these kinds of gases.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the BLEVE probability of LP gas storage tanks which are relatively more dangerous, by the deductive calculating method using the results of Birk's pilot tank test and the required heat capacity of BLEVE. The result that BLEVEs can occur in only above 43.68 percent of liquid filling level under $600^{\circ}C$ of tank pate temperature and $53^{\circ}C$ of inner liquid temperature, was obtained and will be useful for preventing the BLEVE of LP gas storage tanks in fire sites. In addition, this research showed conditions of external leak and fire causing BLEVE, based on 15ton capacity of LP gas tank which has the same specifications as those in Puchon LP gas filling station accident. The result of the calculation is that the minimum pool fire conditions of BLEVE are above 7.2mm equivalent diameter under a liquid release condition and above 17.6mm equivalent diameter under a two-phase release condition. In the end, the result of calculating the pool size corresponding the above conditions using EFFECTS version 2.1, concludes that a minimum of 3.3 meters of diameter and 10.4 meters of height should be needed for BLEVE outbreak.

  • $CO_2$ is non-flammable, non-toxic gas and not cause of chemical explosion. However, various impurities and some oxides can be included in the captured $CO_2$ inevitably. While the $CO_2$ gas was temporarily stored, the pressure in a storage tank would be reached above 100bar. Therefore, the tank could occur a physical explosion due to the corrosion of vessel or uncertainty. Evaluating the intensity of explosion can be calculated by the TNT equivalent method generally used. To describe the physical explosion, it is assumed that the capacity of a $CO_2$ temporary container is about 100 tons. In this work, physical explosion damage in a $CO_2$ storage tank is estimated by using the Hopkinson's scaling law and the injury effect of human body caused by the explosion is assessed by the probit model.

  • This paper investigates the combustion and emission characteristics of a compression ignition engine fueled with neat and blended Shell's gas-to-liquid (GTL) fuel, which was derived from natural gas through the Fischer-Tropsch process. The experiments were conducted in a 6-cylinder DI diesel engine with pump timing settings of $6^{\circ},\;9^{\circ}\;and\;12^{\circ}$crank angle before TDC over ECE R49 and US 13-mode cycles separately and compared to a conventional diesel fuel. The results show that GTL exhibited almost the same power and torque output, improved fuel economy and effective thermal efficiency. It was found that GTL displayed lower peak in-cylinder combustion pressure and maximum heat release rate (HRR), the timings of the peak pressure and the maximum HRR were generally delayed, and the combustion durations were almost equivalent for diesel and GTL under the same speed-load condition. The results also indicate that, compared to diesel fuel, GTL blends showed a trend forward decreasing four regulated emissions simultaneously and a higher GTL fraction in blends contributing to further reductions in the emissions. In particular and on average, neat GTL significantly reduced HC, CO, NOx and PM by 16.4%, 17.8%, 18.3% and 32.4%, respectively, for all cases.
