It may be inefficient to conduct the aeroelastic analysis by using full-scale conventional finite-element analyses or experiments, from the initial design phase, for an aircraft wing which can be considered as the discontinuum complex structure with composite laminated skins. In this paper, therefore more efficient aeroelastic analysis has been conducted for a box-beam typed aircraft wing by using the equivalent continuum beam-rod model which is derived from the concept of energy equivalence. Equivalent structural properties of the continuum beam-rod model are obtained from the direct comparison of the finite-element matrices of continuum beam-rod model with those of box-beam typed aircraft wing. Numerical results by the continuum beam-rod model approach are compared with those by the conventional finite-element analysis approach to show that the continuum beam-rod model proposed herein is quite satisfactory as a simplified model of aircraft wing structure for aeroelastic analyses.
The corrugated panels are the prime candidate structure for the floor, roof and wall of Korean high speed train. The equivalent continuum modeling approach panels can be used for the efficient design and evaluation of their structural characteristics. The equivalent continuum models, derived from the true complex corrugated panels, should have the same structural behavior as the original structures have. This paper briefly reviews three representative continuum modeling methods: the static analysis method and two plate-models based on modal analysis methods (MAM). These methods are evaluated through some numerical examples by comparing the natural frequencies and static deflections. It is observed that the plate-model based on Rayleigh-Ritz method seems to provide the best results when used in conjunction with the cantilever-type boundary conditions. The equivalent elastic constants of various corrugated panels, depending on the changes in their configurations, are tabulated for efficient use in structural design.

A rational and straightforward method is introduced for developing continuum models of large platelike periodic lattice structures based on energy equivalence. The procedure for developing continuum plate models involves the use of existing well-defined finite element matrices for the easy calculation of strain and kinetic energies of a repeating cell, from which the reduced stiffness and mass matrices are obtained in terms of continuum degrees- of-freedom defined in this paper. The equivalent continuum plate properties are obtained from the direct comparison of the reduced matrices for continuum plate with those for lattice plate. The advantages of the present continuum method are that it may be applied to arbitrary lattice configurations and may give most diverse equivalent continuum plate properties including all kinds of coupling, while other methods may give only limited structural properties. To evaluate the continuum method developed in this paper, free vibration analyses for both of continuum and lattice plates are conducted. Numerical results show that the present continuum method gives very reliable structural and dynamic properties compared to other well-recognized methods.
Most of the early studies on plates vibration are focused on two-dimensional theories, these theories reduce the dimensions of problems from three to two by introducing some assumptions in mathematical modeling leading to simpler expressions and derivation of solutions. However, these simplifications inherently bring errors and therefore may lead to unreliable results for relatively thick plates. The main objective of this research paper is to present 3-D elasticity solution for free vibration analysis of continuously graded carbon nanotube-reinforced (CGCNTR) rectangular plates resting on two-parameter elastic foundations. The volume fractions of oriented, straight single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction. In this study, an equivalent continuum model based on the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach is employed to estimate the effective constitutive law of the elastic isotropic medium (matrix) with oriented, straight carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The proposed rectangular plates have two opposite edges simply supported, while all possible combinations of free, simply supported and clamped boundary conditions are applied to the other two edges. The formulations are based on the three-dimensional elasticity theory. A semi-analytical approach composed of differential quadrature method (DQM) and series solution is adopted to solve the equations of motion. The fast rate of convergence of the method is demonstrated and comparison studies are carried out to establish its very high accuracy and versatility. The 2-D differential quadrature method as an efficient and accurate numerical tool is used to discretize the governing equations and to implement the boundary conditions. The convergence of the method is demonstrated and to validate the results, comparisons are made between the present results and results reported by well-known references for special cases treated before, have confirmed accuracy and efficiency of the present approach. The novelty of the present work is to exploit Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach in order to reveal the impacts of the volume fractions of oriented CNTs, different CNTs distributions, various coefficients of foundation and different combinations of free, simply supported and clamped boundary conditions on the vibrational characteristics of CGCNTR rectangular plates. The new results can be used as benchmark solutions for future researches.

The sheet perforated with a uniform triangular pattern of round holes and subjected to in-plane stress f arbitrary biaxiality was investigated. The equivalent continuum approach was employed to develop a theoretical model for global analysis, which includes defining a yield criterion and the strain hardening in terms of apparent stresses and apparent strains. Finit element analysis and experiment tension test were performed to examine the validity of proposed yield criterion and strain hardening models of perforated sheets.
A method for vibration analysis of asymmetric shear wall and Thin walled open section structures is presented in this paper. The whole structure is idealized as an equivalent bending-warping torsion beam in this method. The governing differential equations of equivalent bending-warping torsion beam are formulated using continuum approach and posed in the form of simple storey transfer matrix. By using the storey transfer matrices and point transfer matrices which consider the inertial forces, system transfer matrix is obtained. Natural frequencies can be calculated by applying the boundary conditions. The structural properties of building may change in the proposed method. A numerical example has been solved at the end of study by a program written in MATLAB to verify the presented method. The results of this example display the agreement between the proposed method and the other valid method given in literature.

The enhancement of the service life of damaged or cracked structures is a major issue for researchers and engineers. The hierarchical void element with the integrals of Legend polynomials is used to characterize the fracture behavior of unpatched crack as well as repaired crack with bonded composite patches by computing the stress intensity factors and stress contours at the crack tip. The numerical approach is based on the v-version degenerate shell element including the theory of anisotropic laminated composites. Since the equivalent single layer approach is adopted in this study, the proposed element is necessary to represent a discontinuous crack part as a continuum body with zero stiffness of materials. Thus the aspect ratio of this element to represent the crack should be extremely slender. The sensitivity of numerical solution with respect to energy release rate, displacement and stress has been tested to show the robustness of hierarchical void element as the aspect ratio is increased up to 2000. The stiffness derivative method and displacement extrapolation method have been applied to calculate the stress intensity factors of Mode I problem.
This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of the nonlinear modelling techniques available today for describing the structural behaviour of masonry infills and their interaction with frame structures subjected to in-plane loads. Following brief overviews on the behaviour of masonry-infilled frames and on the results of salient experimental tests, three modelling approaches are discussed in more detail: the micro, the meso and the macro approaches. The first model considers each of the infilled frame elements as separate: brick units, mortar, concrete and steel reinforcement; while the second approach treats the masonry infill as a continuum. The paper focuses on the third approach, which combines frame elements for the beams and columns with one or more equivalent struts for the infill panel. Due to its relative simplicity and computational speed, the macro model technique is more widely used today, though not all proposed models capture the main effects of the frame-infill interaction.
In this paper the geometrically nonlinear continuum plate finite element model, hitherto not reported in the literature, is developed using the total Lagrange formulation. With the layerwise displacement field of Reddy, nonlinear Green-Lagrange small strain large displacements relations (in the von Karman sense) and linear elastic orthotropic material properties for each lamina, the 3D elasticity equations are reduced to 2D problem and the nonlinear equilibrium integral form is obtained. By performing the linearization on nonlinear integral form and then the discretization on linearized integral form, tangent stiffness matrix is obtained with less manipulation and in more consistent form, compared to the one obtained using laminated element approach. Symmetric tangent stiffness matrixes, together with internal force vector are then utilized in Newton Raphson's method for the numerical solution of nonlinear incremental finite element equilibrium equations. Despite of its complex layer dependent numerical nature, the present model has no shear locking problems, compared to ESL (Equivalent Single Layer) models, or aspect ratio problems, as the 3D finite element may have when analyzing thin plate behavior. The originally coded MATLAB computer program for the finite element solution is used to verify the accuracy of the numerical model, by calculating nonlinear response of plates with different mechanical properties, which are isotropic, orthotropic and anisotropic (cross ply and angle ply), different plate thickness, different boundary conditions and different load direction (unloading/loading). The obtained results are compared with available results from the literature and the linear solutions from the author's previous papers.

This paper focuses on two main objectives. The first one is to exploit an energy equivalent model and finite element method to evaluate the equivalent Young's modulus of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) at any orientation angle by using tensile test. The calculated Young's modulus is validated with published experimental results. The second target is to exploit the finite element simulation to investigate mechanical buckling and natural frequencies of SWCNTs. Energy equivalent model is presented to describe the atomic bonding interactions and their chemical energy with mechanical structural energies. A Program of Nanotube modeler is used to generate a geometry of SWCNTs structure by defining its chirality angle, overall length of nanotube and bond length between two adjacent nodes. SWCNTs are simulated as a frame like structure; the bonds between each two neighboring atoms are treated as isotropic beam members with a uniform circular cross section. Carbon bonds is simulated as a beam and the atoms as nodes. A finite element model using 3D beam elements is built under the environment of ANSYS MAPDL environment to simulate a tensile test and characterize equivalent Young's modulus of whole CNT structure. Numerical results are presented to show critical buckling loads, axial and transverse natural frequencies of SWCNTs with different orientation angles and lengths. The understanding of mechanical behaviors of CNTs are essential in developing such structures due to their great potential in wide range of engineering applications.
