  • An Eulerian-Lagrangian method is employed to simulate the ignition process and the flame propagation through the air/fuel spray mixture in a closed constant-volume combustor. The spray mixture is ignited by providing a hot wall at the end of the combustor or by firing the electric spark. The investigated parameters involve the initial droplet size, overall equivalence ratio, initial fuel vapor concentration, distance between the hot wall and the nearest droplet, and the ignition energy. Numerical results clearly show the existence of the optimum spray condition for minimizing the ignition energy and the ignition delay time as well as the critical dependence of ignition upon the distance of the heat source to the nearest droplet.

  • A sub-millimeter scale catalytic combustor with a simple plate-shaped combustion chamber was fabricated. A porous ceramics support coated with platinum catalyst was placed in the chamber. The combustor has a gallium arsenide window on the top that is transparent to infrared ray. The temperature distribution in the combustion chamber was measured using infrared thermal imager while hydrogen-air premixture is steadily supplied to the combustor. The area where the catalytic reaction took place broaden for higher flow rate and lower equivalence ratio made activated area in the combustion chamber broaden. The amount of coated platinum catalyst did not affect the reaction. Stop of reaction, which is similar to flame quenching of conventional combustion, was investigated. Large content of heat generation and broad activated area are essential criteria to prevent stop of reaction that has a bad effect on the combustor performance.

  • A flame speed of methane mixture of water vapor and air have been measured to study the process of flame propagation using schlieren photographs. The quantity of water vapor contained were changed 5% and 10% of total mixture, and equivalence ratio of mixture between 0.8 and 1.2 were tested under the ambient temperature 323K and 373K. The results showed that the burning velocity was decreased by increasing the water vapor contents due to the interruption of flame development. And, the reduction rate of burning velocity was smaller by increasing the water contents under the same ambient temperature. The effects of ambient temperature on burning velocity was decreased by increasing the water vapor contents.

  • In this study, the experimental and numerical investigations of the ignition of methane-air mixtures by a electrically heated wire have been carried out. In order to define the initial condition and make the analysis simple, the following control unit was developed; which heats the wire to the setting temperature in a very short time, and maintains the wire temperature constant until ignition. Experiments with the feedback control have been performed using nickel and platinum wires in normal gravity and microgravity. From experimental results, ignition temperatures in normal gravity are higher than those in microgravity, however, the dependences of ignition temperature on equivalence ratio are not affected by natural convection. Numerical calculations, including catalytic reaction for platinum, have been performed to analyze the experimental results in microgravity. Numerical results show that reactants near platinum wire are consumed by catalytic reaction, therefore, the higher temperature is needed to ignite the mixture with platinum wire.

  • Radiation effects on the partially premixed methane flames diluted with water vapor in the air stream were numerically investigated. OPPDIF code and GRI-v3.0 were used in the numerical simulation. Adiabatic condition was compared with two different radiation models, optically-thin and WSGGM models. It was found that the radiation effect on the flame structure for the equivalence ratio (${\Phi}$) of 2.5 was less than ${\Phi}=1.5$. Extinction limit was not affected significantly, however, local flame structure was markedly influenced by the radiation models as increasing the water vapor concentration.

  • This study is concerned about the combustion characteristics of methane-air and methane/hydrogen-air mainly the behavior of burning velocity including the effect of the ignition energy. The experiments were conducted in a spherical combustion bomb designed in this laboratory. The burning velocities were measured by the pressure-time history and the reaction rates were estimated theoretically. The experimental results showed that the burning velocity increased by 25 to 50 percent when hydrogen is added to methane by 20 percent.

  • Methane/Air premixed flames are studied numerically, using a detailed chemical model, to investigate the flame strech effects on the extinction in a counterflow. The finite difference method, time integration and modified Newton iteration are used, and adaptive grid technique and grid smoothing have been employed to adjust the grid system according to the spatial steepness of the solution profiles. Results show that the flame stretch, or the conventional nondimensionalized stretch having the tangential flow characteristics of the stretched flame alone cannot adequately describes the extinction phenomena. On the other hand, the local flame stretch having both the normal and tangential flow characteristics of the stretched flame can give a proper explanation to the extinction of the symmetric planar premixed flames stabilized in a counter flow. The extinction condition were found to be a constant local stretch regardless of the equivalence ratio.

  • Computational experiments on fundamental un stretched laminar burning velocities and flame response to stretch (represented by the Markstein number) of hydrogen-air flames at high temperatures and pressures were conducted in order to understand the dynamics of the flames including hydrogen as an attractive energy carrier in conditions encountered in practical applications such as internal combustion engines. Outwardly propagating spherical premixed flames were considered for a fuel-equivalence ratio of 0.6, pressures of 5 to 50 atm, and temperatures of 298 to 1000 K. For these conditions, ratios of unstretched-to-stretched laminar burning velocities varied linearly with flame stretch (represented by the Karlovitz number), similar to the flames at normal temperature and normal to moderately elevated pressures, implying that the "local conditions" hypothesis can be extended to the practical conditions. Increasing temperatures tended to reduce tendencies toward preferential-diffusion instability behavior (increasing the Markstein number) whereas increasing pressures tended to increase tendencies toward preferential-diffusion instability behavior (decreasing the Markstein number).

  • Minimum ignition energies of hydrogen/air and methane/air mixtures have been investigated numerically by solving unsteady one-dimensional conservation equations with detailed chemical kinetic mechanisms. Initial kernel size needed for numerical calculation is a sensitive function of initial pressure of a mixture and should be estimated properly to obtain quantitative agreement with experimental results. A simple macroscopic model to determine minimum ignition energy has been proposed, where the initial kernel size is correlated with the quenching distance of a mixture and evaluated from the quenching distance determined from experiment. The simulation predicts minimum ignition energies of two sample mixtures successfully which are in a good agreement with the experimental data for the ranges of pressure and equivalence ratio.

  • Burning velocity of methane-air mixtures with water vapor have been measured to study the process of flame propagation using schlieren photographs and computation. The computations were carried out for the burning velocity using premix code of Chemkin program to compare the experimental results. The quantity of water vapor contained were changed 5% and 10% of total mixtures, and equivalence ratio of mixtures between 0.8 and 1.2 were tested under the ambient temperature 323K and 373K. The results showed little difference between these two methods, the burning velocity was decreased by increasing the water vapor contents due to the interruption of flame development. And, the effect of ambient temperature was less significant by increasing the water contents on the burning velocity.
