  • The present study was conducted to investigate the incidence of equine herpesvirus 1(EHV-1) infection in Korean horses by cell EUSA and serum neutralization test A significant level of antibodies to EHV-1 was detected from 539(82.8%) by cell EUSA and from 524 horses(80.5%) by SNT indicating that EHV-1 infection in Korean horses are widely spreaded throughout the country.

  • It is impotent to identify the causative agents of abortion in equine for minimizing the loss of breeding costs in equine Industry. Recently, the abortion has often occurred in equine herds and thus the purpose of the study was aimed at the identification of equine herpesvirus-1, one of the frequent pathogens to abortion, using polymerase chain reaction. Six fetuses to be aborted at nine to ten months in pregnancy reared in six herds were used in the study. Two primers in the PCR were made from glycoprotein B gene of EHV-1. The primers specific for EHV-1 amplified 1880 bp of PCR products from DNA extracts from thorax fluids, livers, lungs, and spleens of four in six aborted fetuses. Consequently, PCR could be applied to diagnose the abortion of EHV-1 and also confirmed to play a major role of the viral pathogen associated with equine abortion in Jeju island.

  • The present surveys were conducted in attempts to investigate the health situation of horses in Korea through mass-screening the samples serologically, bacteriologically and clinically. A total of 575 horses were sampled randomly, comprising 126 from the Korean Horse Affairs Association, 288 from the Korean Equestrian Federation and 161 from the Jeju ponies. Each of the samples taken was tested for diagnoses of 18 horse diseases including African horse sickness. Summarised below are the results obtained from this surveys. 1. From results of the serological survey it is evident that Korea is currently free from African horse sickness, dourine, glanders, vesicular stomatits, equine piroplasmosis, equine viral arteritis, Venezuelan encephalomyelitis and contagious equine metritis. Constant vigilence with strengthened quarantine measures is thus vital for maintaining freedom of any those diseases in Korea. 2. No clinical case was observed with any of signs or symptoms of infectious lymphangitis, anthrax and infestations with ringworm, mange or scab. However, continuous follow-up is required for establishing the evidence of no occurrence of the diseases in Korea. 3. One case of seropositive to equine infectious anemia may fully justify systematic and regular testings for the whole population of horse in Korea. 4. It is manifested that equine rhinopneumonitis, Japanese encephalitis and Getah virus infection are well established in Korea, together with the presence of equine infectious abortion(Salmonella abortus equi). This strongly entails preventive precautions before entry into Korea for the horses participating in the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

  • The study was carried out to investigate the pathogenicity of EHV isolate to hamsters and mice and immunogenicity of experimentally produced. vaccine were evaluated in the horses. Hamsters infected. intranasally with $LC_1$ isolate showed symptoms of nasal discharge, conjunctivitis and body weight loss during the observation period of 12 days after infection, while only slight depression and body weight loss were noticed with mice infected with $LC_1$ indicating that hamsters are more susceptible to the virus. Antibody titer of mice and hamsters were gradually increased to highest level of 1:2560~10240, 1:640~1280, respectively, at 7~12 days post vaccination. Horses immunized against $LC_1$ killed vaccine reached to maximum antibody titer of 1:20480 around 4 weeks after 1st vaccination and declined after 12 weeks post vaccination. No significant antibody increase were detected after 2nd vaccination. Mean body temperature and mean total leukocyte counts remained within normal range and no adverse reaction were noticed after vaccination.

  • 서울 경마장(競馬場)의 경주마(競走馬) 517두를 대상으로 호흡기병상(呼吸器症狀)을 관찰하여 1978년 12월 중순(中旬)부터 1979년 1월 초순(初旬) 까지 42.9%의 호흡기병상발생률(呼吸器症狀發生率)을 보았고 1979년 1월 하순(下旬)부터 5월 중순(中旬)까지 임신마(姙娠馬)의 60%가 사산(死産)을 일으켰다. 사산(死産)된 태자(胎仔)는 육안적(肉眼的)으로 흉강수액(胸腔水液)의 저류, 각 장기(臟器)의 울혈성수종(鬱血性水種), 출혈성병변(出血性病變)과 간장(肝臟)의 소상괴사(巢狀壞死)를 나타내었고, 조직학적(組織學的)으로는 간장(肝臟)의 한국성괴사소(限局性壞死巢), 비장(脾臟), 임파절(淋巴節), 흉선(胸線)과 Peyer판(板)에서의 세강(細網) 세포(細胞)의 증식성(增殖性), 괴사성변화(壞死性變化)와 임파양세포(淋巴樣細胞)의 붕괴(崩壞)를 시현(示顯)하였다. 여기서 간세포(肝細胞), 담관상피세포(膽管上皮細胞), 소기관지상피세포(小氣管支上皮細胞) 및 비장(脾臟), 임파절(淋巴節), 흉선(胸線)의 세강(細網) 세포(細胞)에서 Cowdry type A 봉입체(封入體)를 확인하였다. 이상의 역학적(疫學的) 및 병리학적(病理學的) 소견(所見)에 의하여 본(本) 마유산증(馬流産症)을 말 바이러스성 비폐염(鼻肺炎)이라고 진단(診斷)할 수 있었으며 본(本) 발병예(發病例)가 한국(韓國)에서 초발생(初發生)인 것으로 추정(推定)되었다.

  • The study was carried out to characterize the properties of Korean isolates of EHV from aborted fetuses and determine envelope protein profiles. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Two strains of EHV was isolated from 2 liver samples among 10 aborted fetuses from which the virus isolation was attempted. 2. Morphological and some enzymatic properties of the Korean isolates of EHV which was designated as $LC_1$ and $LC_2$ was identical to those of a reference strain of Australia-N of EHV-1. The Korean isolates of EHV could be propagated on ED cell culture and they formed typical plaques 1 to 2 days after infection in the ED cells from which typical cuboidal particles of 150~170 nm diameter herpesvirus were observed. The virus could be detected specifically from neucleus and cytoplasm of infected cells by flourescent antibody technique using FITC labelled anti-Aust IV(EHV-1) antiserum. The Korean isolates, $LC_1$ and $LC_2$ were specifically neutralized by anti Aust IV antiserum and reacted positively to CELISA. 3. The structural polypeptides of purified enveloped virions of $LC_1$ and $LC_2$ isolates of EHV were determined by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to identify the envelope glycoproteins. $LC_1$ and $LC_2$ strains revealed 14 glycoproteins ranging in molecular weight from 190 kD to 31 kD while 17 structural proteins of Aust IV(EHV-1), of which 14 were identical to those of $LC_1$ and $LC_2$, were identified. Upon immunoblotting by rabbit antiserum against EHV isolates and EHV-1(Aust IV), 4 immunogenic proteins of $LC_1$ and $LC_2$ were 135 kD, 88 kD, 64 kD and 59 kD, of which 135 kD, 88 kD and 64 kD proteins were also found in Aust IV(EHV-1).
