  • In the present study Sisal fiber obtained from the leaves of Agave sisalana has been chosen to validate its viability as an adsorbent for the removal of Nickel from aqueous solutions. The material was also surface modified and its effect on adsorption of Nickel was also studied. Agave sisalana fiber was found to be a cheap and effective adsorbent doing away with the need to activate the material therby reducing processing cost. The equilibrium studies indicated that the adsorption capacity of raw fiber and the surface modified fiber was 8.66 and 9.77 mg/g respectively with the Langmuir isotherm describing the adsorption phenomena better than the Freundlich and Temkin isotherm. The adsorption was found to be exothermic from the thermodynamic studies and the kinetics showed that the adsorption phenomena were second order.

  • This paper compares regression and neural network modeling approaches to predict competitive biosorption equilibrium data. The regression approach is based on the fitting of modified Langmuir-type isotherm models to experimental data. Neural networks, on the other hand, are non-parametric statistical estimators capable of identifying patterns in data and correlations between input and output. Our results show that the neural network approach outperforms traditional regression-based modeling in correlating and predicting the simultaneous uptake of copper and cadmium by a microbial biosorbent. The neural network is capable of accurately predicting unseen data when provided with limited amounts of data for training. Because neural networks are purely data-driven models, they are more suitable for obtaining accurate predictions than for probing the physical nature of the biosorption process.

  • The carboxylated multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) and functionalized with isatin derivative (MWCNT-isatin) have been used as efficient adsorbents for the removal of lead (Pb) from aqueous solutions. The influence of variables including pH, concentration of the lead, amount of adsorbents and contact time was investigated by the batch method. The adsorption of the lead ions from aqueous solution by modified MWCNTs was studied kinetically using different kinetic models. The kinetic data were fitted with pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models. The sorption process with MWCNT-COOH and MWCNT-isatin was well described by pseudo-second-order and pseudo-first-order kinetics, respectively which it was agreed well with the experimental data. Also, it involved the particle-diffusion mechanism. The values of regression coefficient of various adsorption isotherm models like Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin to obtain the characteristic parameters of each model have been carried out. The Langmuir isotherm was found to best represent the measured sorption data for both adsorbent.

  • Color impurity in industrial effluents pose a significant risk to human health and the environment, so much effort has been expended to degrade them using various methods, including the use of clay minerals as adsorbent. The purpose of this study was to advance understanding of the mechanisms for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions onto montmorillonite as an adsorbent. Preliminary experiments showed that montmorillonite was effective for this purpose and adsorption equilibrium could be reached in about 24 h. Adsorption capacity of the clay decreased with increase in temperature and ionic strength, and increased with in pH. The fitness of equilibrium data to common isotherm equations such as the Langmuir, Freundlich, Elovich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich were tested. The Langmuir equation fitted to equilibrium data better than all tested isotherm models. Thermodynamic activation parameters such as ${\Delta}G^0$, ${\Delta}S^0$ and ${\Delta}H^0$ were also calculated and results were evaluated. As result montmorillonite clay was found as effective low cost adsorbent for removal of cationic dyes from waste waters.

  • The study was conducted to evaluate the adsorption equilibrium of heavy metals on bone charcoal made of livestock bone which was sintered at $550{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. Analysis of bone charcoal by XRD and FT-IR showed that crystal structure was similar to that of synthetic hydroxyapatite. Adsorption equilibrium capacity of single component (Pb, Cd, and Zn) on bone charcoal could be expressed as Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips equations. Sips isotherm was best among the three isotherms. The values predicted by IAST(ideal adsorbed solution theory) showed good relationship to the experimental data in multicomponent adsorption equilibrium. Adsorption affinity was in order of Pb, Cd, and Zn. The order was same in case of activated carbon or synthetic hydroxyapatite. Through the study results. it would be expected that bone charcoal made of livestock could be used in field of wastewater treatment plants as adsorbent to remove heavy metal.

  • The aim of the present study is to explore the possibility of utilizing loess for the adsorption of total phosphorous (T-P) and total nitrogen (T-N) in water. Batch adsorption studies were performed to evaluate the influences of various factors like initial concentration, contact time and temperature on the adsorption of T-P and T-N. The adsorption data showed that loess is not effective for the adsorption of T-N. However, loess exhibited much higher adsorption capacity for T-P. At concentration of $1.0mgL^{-1}$, approximately 97% of T-P adsorption was achieved by loess. The equilibrium data were fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm model. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model appeared to be the better-fitting model because it has higher $R^2$ compared with the pseudo-first-order and intra-particle kinetic model. The theoretical adsorption equilibrium $q_{e,cal}$ from pseudo-second-order kinetic model was relatively similar to the experimental adsorption equilibrium $q_{e,exp}$. The thermodynamic parameters such as free energy ${\Delta}G$, the enthalpy ${\Delta}H$ and the entropy ${\Delta}S$ were also calculated.

  • In this study, we compared with results simulated by EOS(Equation of State) using Peng-Robinson model and GERG-2004 model for estimating vapor pressure, latent heat of vaporation, liquid density, and binary isotherm vapor-liquid equilibrium on pure components composing natural gases. We obtained the simulated results that while EOS using GERG-2004 model is more accurate than EOS using Peng-Robinson model for estimating liquid density, but rather it is less accurate for estimating binary isotherm vapor-liquid equilibrium. On the other hand, the use of Costald model in EOS using Peng-Robinson model for increasing more accuracy to calculate liquid density is almost same as EOS using GERG-2004 model within the error of 1 % compared with experimental data. Also, we confirmed that on the estimation of binary isotherm vapor-liquid equilibrium, EOS using GERG-2004 model is more accurate than EOS using Peng-Robinson model, but they are almost same.

  • Adsorption experiments for $H_2$, $CO_2$, CO, and their binary mixtures on zeolite 5A were performed by static volumetric method. Experimental data were obtained at temperatures of 293.15, 303.15 and 313.15 K and at pressures to 25 atm. The parameters obtained from single component adsorption isotherm. Multicomponent adsorption equilibria could be predicted and compared with experimental data. Langmuir isotherm, Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm and Dual-Site Langmuir isotherm be used to predict the experimental results for binary adsorption equilibria of $CO_2/CO$ and $H_2/CO_2$ on zeolite 5A. Dual-Site Langmuir isotherm showed the best agreement with the experimental results.

  • Cadmium (Cd) adsorption by the activated carbon containing hydroxyapatite (HAP) was investigated. Cd adsorption with different HAP mass ranged from 10% to 30%. With more HAP, more Cd was adsorbed. These results suggest that the higher HAP dose causes an increase of the ion exchange potential in HAP sorbent. Kinetics and equilibrium studies were investigated in series of batch adsorption experiments. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were fit to the equilibrium data and Cd adsorption on HAP sorbent were found to follow the Freundlich isotherm model well in the initial adsorbate concentration range. The simple kinetic model, the pseudo first order kinetic model and the pseudo second order kinetic model, were used to investigate the adsorption. The adsorption reaction of Cd followed the pseudo second order kinetic model, and the adsorption pseudo second order kinetic constants ($k_2$) increased with increasing initial HAP amounts onto activated carbon. Also, intraparticle diffusion model was used to investigate the adsorption mechanism between adsorbate and adsorbent in the aqueous phase. Surface adsorption reaction and intraparticle diffusion occur simultaneously Cd adsorption mechanism from aqueous phase in this study.
