  • Pilot operated control valve for $CO_2$ refrigerant is a valve that can perform various functions according to the user's intention by replacing pilot units, widely used for flow rate, pressure, and temperature control of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. In addition, $CO_2$ refrigerant, that requires high pressure and low critical temperature, can be installed and used in all positions of the refrigeration system, regardless of high or low pressure. In this paper, response characteristics are modeled and analyzed based on behavior of the main piston of the pilot-operated control valve. Although various factors influence operation of the main piston, this paper analyzes the effect of equilibrium pressure depending on valve installation position and application, and inlet and outlet orifice size of the load pressure feedback chamber to determine feedback characteristics of the main piston. As a result, it was possible to quantitatively analyze the effect of change in equilibrium and load pressure feedback chamber flow path size on the change in main piston dynamic and static characteristics.

  • This study used a packed column reactor and a horizontal flow mesh reactor to examine the removal of copper ions from aqueous solutions using pine bark, a natural adsorbent prepared from Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora). Both equilibrium and nonequilibrium adsorption experiments were conducted on copper ion concentrations of 10mg/L, and the removals of copper ions at equilibrium were close to 95%. Adsorption of copper ions could be well described by both the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. The bark was treated with nitric acid to enhance efficiency of copper removal, and sorption capacity was improved by about 48% at equilibrium; mechanisms such as ion exchange and chelation may have been involved in the sorption process. A pseudo second-order kinetic model described the kinetic behavior of the copper ion adsorption onto the bark. Regeneration with nitric acid resulted in extended use of spent bark in the packed column. The horizontal flow mesh reactor allowed approximately 80% removal efficiency, demonstrating its operational flexibility and the potential for its practical use as a bark filter reactor.

  • The 180W is the lightest isotope of Tungsten with small abundance ratio. It is slightly radioactive (α decay), with an extremely long half-life. Its separation is possible by non-conventional single withdrawal cascades. The 180W is used in radioisotopes production and study of metals through gamma-ray spectroscopy. In this paper, single withdrawal cascade model is developed to evaluate multicomponent separation in non-conventional transient cascades, and available experimental results are used for validation. Numerical studies for separation of 180W in a transient single withdrawal cascade are performed. Parameters affecting the separation and equilibrium time of cascade such as number of stages, cascade arrangements, feed location and flow rate for a fixed number of gas centrifuges (GC) are investigated. The Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) as a bio-inspired optimization algorithm is applied as a novel method to minimize the feed consumption to obtain desired concentration in the collection tank. Examining different cascade arrangements, it is observed in arrangements with more stages, the separation is further efficient. Based on the obtained results, with increasing feed flow rate, for fixed product concentration, the cascade equilibrium time decreases. Also, it is shown while the feed location is the farthest stage from the collection tank, the separation and cascade equilibrium time are well-organized. Finally, using SSA optimal parameters of the cascade is calculated, and optimal arrangement to produce 5 gr of 180W with 90% concentration in the tank, is proposed.

  • A numerical method for gas-liquid two-phase flow is applied to solve shock-bubble interaction problems. The present method employs a finite-difference Runge-Kutta method and Roe's flux difference splitting approximation with the MUSCL-TVD scheme. A homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model is used. By this method, a Riemann problem for shock tube was computed for validation. Then, shock-bubble interaction problems between cylindrical bubbles located in the liquid and incident liquid shock wave are computed.

  • A series of experiments using transparent micromodels with an artificial pore network etched on glass plates was performed to investigate the effects of flow rate on the migration and distribution of resident wetting porewater (deionized water) and injecting non-wetting fluid (n-hexane). Multicolored images transformed from real RGB images were used to distinguish n-hexane from porewater and pore structure. Hexane flooding followed by immiscible displacement with porewater, migration through capillary fingering, preferential flow and bypassing were observed during injection experiments. The areal displacement efficiency increases as the injection of n-hexane continues until the equilibrium reaches. Experimental results showed that the areal displacement efficiency at equilibrium increases as the flow rate increases. Close observation reveals that preferential flowpaths through larger pore bodies and throats and clusters of entrapped porewater were frequently created at lower flow rate. At higher flow rate, randomly oriented forward and lateral flowpaths of n-hexane displaces more porewater at an efficiency close to stable displacement. It may resulted from that the pore pressure of n-hexane, at higher flow rate, increases fast enough to overcome capillary pressure acting on smaller pore throats as well larger ones. Experimental results in this study may provide fundamental information on migration and distribution of immiscible fluids in subsurface porous media.

  • The modeling for turbulent flow through a porous media has not been confirmed because of a undetermined constant which appears in the governing equations. In present study, the turbulent porous modeling based on the local thermal equilibrium has been extended to the turbulent clear flow. A undetermined constant is also suggested by microscopic analysis. The microscopic analysis is performed in the flat tube with micro-channels, and it confirms that the undetermined constant is 0.99. It is shown that the results of the macroscopic analysis using confirmed constant agree well with those of the microscopic analysis with a maximum error of 3.5%.

  • We explored the dynamic motions and the lateral equilibrium positions of an elastic capsule in channel flow at moderate Reynolds number varying Re, aspect ratio, size ratio, membrane stretching and bending coefficient. The transition of tank-treading/swinging to tumbling motion was observed in the simulations and the transition of dynamic motions for capsules resulted in different trend of the variation in the lateral equilibrium positions. Though other conditions were similar, the capsule with tumbling motion migrated closer to the wall than that with tank-treading motion.

  • This paper describes aerodynamic heating on a hypersonic vehicle. For this purpose, the 2-D, and 3-D equilibrium code are developed. In order to obtain an accurate solution, AUSMPW+ is used for spatial discretization. Curve fitting data in NASA Reference Publication 1181, 1260 are used to calculate equilibrium properties. To observe aerodynamic heating phenomena, Reynolds number parametric study for diamond airfoil is done, 3-D full Navier-Stokes equation is computed and wall temperature distribution data are obtained. Analyzing these results, we conclude that Reynolds number and secondary flow are important factors in aerodynamic heating.

  • The nonlinear low-Reynolds-number k..epsilon. model of park and Sung is extended to predict the turbulent heat transports in separated and reattaching flows. The equations of the temperature variance( $k_{\theta}$ and its dissipation rate(.epsilon.$_{\theta}$ are solved, in concert with the equations of the turbulent kinetic energy(k) and its dissiation rate(.epsilon). In the present model, the near-wall effect and the non-equilibrium effect are fully taken into consideration. The validation of the model is then applied to the turbulent flow behind a backward-facing step and the flow over a blunt body. The predicted results of the present model are compared and evaluated with the relevant experiments.
