  • Bars of OFHC Cu with the diameter of 45 mm were processed by equal channel angular pressing up to 16 passes via route $B_c$, and homogeneity of their microstructures and mechanical properties was examined at every four passes which develop the equiaxed ultrafine grains. In general, overall hardness, yield strength and tensile strength increased by 3, 7, and 2 times respectively compared with those of unECAPed sample. Cross-sectional hardness exhibited a concentric distribution. Hardness was the highest at the center of bar and it decreased gradually from center to surface. After 16 passes, overall hardness decreased due to recovery and partial recrystallization. Regardless of the number of passage, yield strength and tensile strength were quite uniform at all positions, but elongation showed some degree of scattering. At 4 passes, coarse and ultrafine grains coexisted at all positions. After 4 passes, uniform equiaxed ultrafine grains were obtained at the center, while uniform elongated ultrafine grains were manifested at the upper half position. At the lower half position, grains were equiaxed but its size were inhomogeneous. It was found that inhomogeneity of grain morphology and grain size distribution at different positions are to be attributed to scattering in elongation but they did not affect strength. The present results reveal the high potential of practical application of equal channel angular pressing on fabrication of large-sized ultrafine grained bars with quite homogeneous mechanical properties.

  • Aluminum alloy-based additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as a popular manufacturing process for the fabrication of complex parts in the automotive and aerospace industries. The addition of an inoculant to aluminum alloy powder has been demonstrated to effectively reduce cracking by promoting the formation of equiaxed grains. However, the optimization of the AM process parameters remains challenging owing to their variability. In this study, the response surface methodology (RSM) was used to predict the crack density of AM-processed Al alloy samples. RSM was performed by setting the process parameters and equiaxed grain ratio, which influence crack propagation, as independent variables and designating crack density as a response variable. The RSM-based quadratic polynomial models for crack-density prediction were found to be highly accurate. The relationship among the process parameters, crack density, and equiaxed grain fraction was also investigated using RSM. The findings of this study highlight the efficacy of RSM as a reliable approach for optimizing the properties of AM-processed parts with limited experimental data. These results can contribute to the development of robust AM processing strategies for the fabrication of high-quality Al alloy components for various applications.

  • Cu-Sn based alloys were manufactured by gas atomization spray casting route in order to achieve a fine scale microstructure and a high tensile strength. The spray cast Cu-10Sn-2Ni-0.2Si alloy had an equiaxed grain microstructure, with no formation of brittle ${\delta}-Cu_{41}Sn_{11}$ phase. Aging treatment promoted the precipitation of finely distributed particles corresponding to ${\delta}-Ni_2Si$ intermetallic phase throughout the $\alpha$-(CuSn) matrix. The cold-rolled Cu-Sn-Ni-Si alloy had a very high tensile strength of 1200 MPa and an elongation of 5%. Subsequent aging treatment at $450^{\circ}C$ for 1h slightly reduced the tensile strength to 700 MPa and remarkably increased the elongation up to 30%. This result has been explained by coarsening the precipitates due to over aging and reducing the dislocation density due to annealing effects.

  • The microstructural changes of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy containing Sc during hot extrusion and post heat treatment is investigated. Two kinds of Al-Sc alloys with different alloying elements (B1, B2) are hot extruded to make I-shape bars at 380$^{\circ}C$, then the bars are solution treated at 480$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs followed by artificial aging at 120$^{\circ}C$ for 24hrs. The interior microstructure of as extruded bar consists of elongated grains, however, fine equiaxed grains are mainly observed around surface. The microstructural gradient suggests that different restoration process can proceed during the hot extrusion. For B1 and B2, different grain growth behaviors are found around the surface during the post heat treatment. Rapid grain growth behavior around the surface is discussed related with the crystallographic orientation of the grain.

  • Commercially pure 1050 aluminum alloy with ultra-fine grain sizes was produced by a friction stir process. The maximum temperature in the friction stir processed zone decreased almost linearly with the tool rotation speed. In the friction stir processed zone, dislocation density was very low and fine equiaxed grains were observed. The grain size decreased with tool rotation speed. It is noteworthy that, for 560 rpm, a grain size decreased to even the submicron level with only the single pass of friction stir process. These fine grains resulted in improvement in hardness of the friction stir processed zone.

  • 2024 Al alloys were severely deformed by equal channel angular pressing(ECAP) to obtain an ultrafine grain structure. The more deformation amount increased, the more grain size decreased. Most of the grain structure were changed from elongated to equiaxed shape with increasing pass number. The morphology of S' phases was also changed from rod-type to spherical type. The grain size of 6 passed specimen was 100 to 200 nm, and the size of S' phases was about 10 nm in the microstructure. XRD measurements have revealed that the texture formed by plastic deformation disappeared in the 6 passed specimen. SP test results described that the start of crack propagation occurred at the transition zone between plastic bending and membrane stretching because of small elongation. The maximum strength of ECA pressed specimen increased 1.9 GPa to 2.9 GPa with increasing pass number.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the high temperature deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and to predict the final microstructure under given forming conditions. Equiaxed and widmanstatten of Ti-6Al-4V alloys were prepared as initial microstructure and the compression tests were performed to obtain the flow curves at high temperatures (700∼1100$^{\circ}C$) and various strain rates (10$\^$-4/∼10$^2$/s). Form the results of compression test various parameters such as strain rate sensitivity (m) and activation energy (Q) were calculated and used to establish constitutive equations. To predict the final microstructure after forming, finite element analysis was performed considering the microstructural parameters such as the grain size and the volume fraction of second phase.

  • Composites of SiC-Si3N4 consisted of uniformly distributed elongated $\beta$-Si3N4 grains and equiaxed $\beta$-SiC grains were fabricated with $\beta$-SiC,. $\alpha$-Si3N4 Al2O3 and Y2O3 powders. By hot-pressing and subsequent annelaing elongated $\beta$-Si3N4 grains were grown via$\alpha$longrightarrow$\beta$ phase transformation and equiaxed $\beta$-Si3N4 composites increased with increasing the Si3N4 content owing to the reduced defect size and enhanced crack deflection by elongated $\beta$-Si3N4 grains and the grain boundary strengthening by nitrogen incorporation. Typical flexural strength and fracture toughness of SiC-40 wt% Si3N4 composites were 783 MPa and 4.2 MPa.m1/2 respectively.

  • Semisolid A356 slurries were prepared by electromagnetic stirring casting and by inoculation of Al-5Ti-B master alloy. As stirring time and addition of Al-5Ti-B are different, the grain size of the primary phase is different. Through the experiment of rheocast in a Buhler horizontal die casting machine, it was found that the finer the equiaxed primary dendrites, the smoother the die filling and better cast quality. Small equiaxed primary dendrite also results in less liquid segregation on the surface.
