This paper describes the assessment of seismic performance of the concrete gravity dam seismically reinforced by post-tensioned anchors. In order to evaluate the seismic performance, the response spectrum analyses have been carried out for 7 different configurations of the post-tensioned anchors, and then their performance improvement in the maximum tensile and compressive stresses is compared to each other. The comparative results demonstrate that the layout of the post-tensioned anchors strongly influences the seismic performance of the concrete gravity dam. In this study, the slightly-inclined vertical anchorage system shows the largest improvement on the overall performance of the seismically-excited concrete gravity dam.
A 3-node 3D co-rotational beam element using vectorial rotational variables is employed to consider the geometric nonlinearity in 3D space. To account for shape versatility and reinforced concrete cross-sections, fibre model has been derived and conducted. Numerical integration over the cross-section is performed, considering both normal and shear stresses. In addition, the derivations associated with material nonlinearity are given in terms of elasto-plastic incremental stress-strain relationship for both steel and concrete. Steel reinforcement is treated as elasto-plastic material with Von Mises yield criterion. Compressive concrete behaviour is described by Modified Kent and Park model, while tensile stiffening effect is taken into account as well. Through several numerical examples, it is shown that the proposed 3D co-rotational beam element with fibre model can be used to simulate steel and reinforced concrete framed structures with satisfactory accuracy and efficiency.
This study presents results of thermal stress calculations around the uplifted province within the continental lithosphere. A set of thermal stresses for the uplifted provinces are calculated using by assumption of two dimensions along the extension of the strike. The calculations utilize thermoelastic displacement potential function. Thermal stress distribution-faulting conditions inferred from this study are consistent with the suggested surface heat flow and place an important constraint on the thermal state of the uplifted provinces within the continental lithosphere.

The OJIP transients were investigated from leaves of Crinum asiaticum var. japonicum, Osmanthus insularis, Chloranthus glaber and Asplenium antiquum, in order to screen the indicators for quantification of environmental stresses and to apply them to the plant vitality test. The obvious diurnal changes or OJIP transients were found in Crinum asiaticum var. japonicum, Osmanthus insularis growing in sunny habitats, showing lower Fp and higher Fo in day time. The values of SF $I_{no}$ and P $I_{NO}$ increased dramatically in day time in leaves of Crinum asiaticum var. japonicum, Osmanthus insularis, and Asplenium antiquum. Although the value of RC/CS decreased slightly in day time in leaves of 4 tropica $l_tropical plants, the obvious diurnal changes or OJIP transients were not seen in winter, suggesting that tropica $l_tropical paints used in this research seemed to be irreversibly damaged in winter. However, the values of ETo/RC and Ψo/(1-Ψo) increased significantly in leaves of Crinum asiaticum var. japonicum, indicating that ETO/RC and Ψo/(1-Ψo) were useful as indicator parameters for scensing of low temperature.ature.
This paper explores stress release induced by unloading in dry sand. A series of model tests were carried out to measure stresses developed in testing sand during loading and those released during unloading for different boundary conditions. It was found that stress in the sand increased linearly with applied load. At the onset of unloading, almost no stress release was observed. Significant stress release took place when the shear stress in the sand induced by unloading exceeded the frictional resistance and caused movement of sand particles. The initiation and the magnitude of stress release depend on the stress condition prior to unloading, the decrease of external load, and also the frictional resistance in sand. A new conceptual stress-release model was next developed based on the model test results by considering the fundamental frictional behavior of granular materials.

High salinity is a common stress condition that adversely affects plant growth and crop production. In response to various environmental stresses, plants activate a number of defense genes that function to increase the tolerance. To isolate Arabidopsis genes that are involved in abiotic stress responses, we carried out genetic screening using various mutant lines. Among them, the blh8 ($\b{B}$EL1-$\b{L}$ike $\b{H}$omeodomain $\underline{8}$) mutant specifically shows chlorotic phenotypes to ionic (specifically, $Na^+$ and $K^+$) stresses, but no differences in root growth. In addition, BLH8 is related to plant development and abiotic stress as predicted by a Graphical Gaussian Model (GGM) network program. It implies that BLH8 functions as a putative transcription factor related to abiotic stress responses. Collectively, our results show that gene network analysis is a useful tool for isolating genes involved in stress adaptation in plants.

The restrained volume changes of concrete due to variations of temperature and moisture produce transverse cracks in continuously reinforced concrete tracks (CRCTs). Such cracks are known to significantly affect the behaviors and long-term performance of CRCT. To investigate the effects of the transverse cracks on the behavior of CRCT and to develop more reasonable maintenance standards for cracks, in this study, the stress distribution of the track concrete layers (TCL) and the hydraulically stabilized base course (HSB) with transverse cracks were numerically predicted by a three dimensional finite element analysis when CRCT was subjected to train loads. The results indicate that the bending stresses of TCL and vertical stresses at the interfaces between TCL and HSB increased as the cracks were deepened. In addition, vertical stresses were locally concentrated near reinforcing steel in cracks in TCL when full-depth cracks developed, which may lead to punch-outs in CRCTs. Comparably, the effects of crack width and spacing were not as significant as crack depth. This study indicates that ensuring the long-term performance of CRCTs requires adequate maintenance not only for crack width and spacing but also for crack depth. Our results also show that locating HSB joints between sleepers is beneficial to the long-term performance of CRCTs.

Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L). Lam.) is relatively tolerant to unfavorable growth conditions such as drought, yet has not been exploited to provide a better understanding of the molecular basis of drought stress tolerance. We obtained 983 high-quality expressed sequence tags of 100 bp or longer (average length of 700 bp) from cDNA libraries of detached white fibrous root tissues by subjecting them to dehydration for 6 h. The 431 cDNAs were each assigned a function by alignment using the BLASTX algorithm. Among them, three genes associated with various abiotic stresses and nine genes not previously associated with drought stress were selected for expression pattern analysis through detailed reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The direct and indirect relationships of the 12 genes with drought tolerance mechanisms were ascertained at different developmental stages and under various stress conditions.
Heat shock proteins (Hsps) play a key role in the cellular defense response to diverse environmental stresses. Here, the role of Hsp genes in the acquisition of thermotolerance in the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa NIES-298 was investigated. Twelve Hsp-related genes were examined to observe their modulated expression patterns at different temperatures (10, 15, 25, and $35^{\circ}C$) over different exposure periods. HspA and HtpG transcripts showed an up-regulation of expression at low temperatures (10 and $15^{\circ}C$) and high temperature ($35^{\circ}C$), compared with the control ($25^{\circ}C$). To examine their effects upon thermotolerance, we purified recombinant HspA and HtpG proteins. During a thermotolerance study at $54^{\circ}C$, the HspA-transformed bacteria showed increased thermotolerance compared with the control. HtpG also played a role in the defense response to acute heat stress within 30 min. These findings provide a better understanding of cellular protection mechanisms against heat stress in cyanobacteria.

A renewable energy storage pile foundation system is being developed through a multi-disciplinary research project. This system intends to use reinforced concrete pile foundations configured with hollowed sections to store renewable energy generated from solar panels attached to building structures in the form of compressed air. However previous research indicates that the compressed air will generate considerable high circumferential tensile stresses in the concrete pile, which requires unrealistic high hoop reinforcement ratio to avoid leakage of the compressed air. One possible solution is to utilize fiber reinforced concrete instead of placing the hoop reinforcement to resist the tensile stress. This paper investigates nonlinear structural responses and post-cracking behavior of the fiber reinforced concrete pile subjected to high air pressure through nonlinear finite element simulations. Concrete damage plasticity models were used in the simulation. Several parameters were considered in the study including concrete grade, fiber content, and thickness of the pile section. The air pressures which the pile can resist at different crack depths along the pile section were identified. Design recommendations were provided for the energy storage pile foundation using the fiber reinforced concrete.
