A modal parameter based damage sensitive feature (DSF) is defined to mimic the relative change in any diagonal element of the stiffness matrix of a model of a structure. The damage assessment is performed in a statistical pattern recognition framework using empirical complementary cumulative distribution functions (ECCDFs) of the DSFs extracted from measured operational vibration response data. Methods are discussed to perform probabilistic structural health assessment with respect to the following questions: (a) "Is there a change in the current state of the structure compared to the baseline state?", (b) "Does the change indicate a localized stiffness reduction or increase?", with the latter representing a situation of retrofitting operations, and (c) "What is the severity of the change in a probabilistic sense?". To identify a range of normal structural variations due to environmental and operational conditions, lower and upper bound ECCDFs are used to define the baseline structural state. Such an approach attempts to decouple "non-damage" related variations from damage induced changes, and account for the unknown environmental/operational conditions of the current state. The damage assessment procedure is discussed using numerical simulations of ambient vibration testing of a bridge deck system, as well as shake table experimental data from a 4-story steel frame.

The capabilities of a high-resolution Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system are presented within the context of deformation measurements of full-scale concrete columns tested under reversed cyclic loading. The system was developed to have very high-resolution such that material strains on the order of the cracking stain of concrete could be measured on the surface of full-scale structural members. The high-resolution DIC system allows the measurement of a wide range of deformations and strains that could only be inferred or assumed previously. The DIC system is able to resolve the full profiles of member curvatures, rotations, plasticity spread, shear deformations, and bar-slip induced rotations. The system allows for automatic and objective measurement of crack widths and other damage indices that are indicative of cumulated damage and required repair time and cost. DIC damage measures contrast prevailing proxy damage indices based on member force-deformation data and subjective damage measures obtained using visual inspection. Data derived from high-resolution DIC systems is shown to be of great use in advancing the state of behavioral knowledge, calibrating behavioral and analytical models, and improving simulation accuracy.
This study aims to increase the ability to adapt to the ecosystem and promote a sustainable use of the natural environment, by classifying the types of damaged lands according to various factors, such as the characteristics of the target area and form, cause, and impact of damage. Moreover, the study suggests the development of evaluation categories and criteria by each type. The results obtained are as follows: first, for the assessment of damaged lands, the changed areas were identified utilizing land cover maps. Video analysis was performed to increase the accuracy, and 88 sites were obtained. Second, the types of damage were classified into ecological infrastructure and ecological environment, and the sub-factors of the cause of damage were classified into 12 factors. Third, each evaluation system for the types of damage was composed of four steps, considering each type of damage and the level of evaluators being higher than paraprofessionals. To supplement this study, it will be necessary to utilize the database of damaged lands other than the Seoul Metropolitan Area and conduct an on-site survey for verification in the future.

The stochastic damage locating vector (SDLV) method has been studied extensively in recent years because of its potential to determine the location of damage in structures without the need for measuring the input excitation. The SDLV method has been shown to be a particularly useful tool for damage localization in steel truss bridges through numerical simulation and experimental validation. However, several issues still need clarification. For example, two methods have been suggested for determining the observation matrix C identified for the structural system; yet little guidance has been provided regarding the conditions under which the respective formulations should be used. Additionally, the specific layout of the sensors to achieve effective performance with the SDLV method and the associated relationship to the specific type of truss structure have yet to be explored. Moreover, how the location of truss members influences the damage localization results should be studied. In this paper, these three issues are first investigated through numerical simulation and subsequently the main results are validated experimentally. The results of this paper provide guidance on the effective use of the SDLV method.
Limited, noisy data in vibration testing is a hindrance to the development of structural damage detection. This paper presents a method for optimizing sensor placement and performing damage detection using finite element model updating. Sensitivity analysis of the modal flexibility matrix determines the optimal sensor locations for collecting information on structural damage. The optimal sensor locations require the instrumentation of only a limited number of degrees of freedom. Using noisy modal data from only these limited sensor locations, a method based on model updating and changes in the flexibility matrix successfully determines the location and severity of the imposed damage in numerical simulations. In addition, a steel cantilever beam experiment performed in the laboratory that considered the effects of model error and noise tested the validity of the method. The results show that the proposed approach effectively and robustly detects structural damage using limited, optimal sensor information.
The purpose of this study is the impact of national fishing port investment and typhoons on fisheries disaster damage. The dependent variables were the amount of damage to fishing ports, fishing boats, fisheries enhancement, external facilities, mooring facilities, functional facilities, fishing port and typhoons. The analysis period is from 2002 to 2018. Since the error term is in a simultaneous correlation, it was efficiently estimated by analyzing it with a seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) method. As a result of the analysis, external facilities have not significance to all models. Investing in mooring facilities increased the amount of damage to fishing ports for five years. Investing in functional facilities reduced the amount of damage to fishing ports and aquaculture over five years. Typhoons have significance to all models, and the amount of damage increased every time a typhoon occurred. Based on these results, as the influence of typhoons increases, it seems necessary to establish preventive measures. Timely investment and maintenance to enable the role and function of national fishing ports are considered important.
Industrial inverters are used in a variety of fields for electric power supply. They may be exposed to vibration and heat once they are installed. This study focused on a framework of accelerated life testing of an industrial inverter considering fatigue damage as the primary source of deterioration. Instead of analyzing detailed failure mechanisms and the product's vulnerability to them, the potential of fatigue failure is considered using the fatigue damage spectrum calculated from the environmental vibration signals. The acceleration and temperature data were gathered using field measurement and spectral analysis was conducted to calculate the vibration signal's power spectral density (PSD). The fatigue damage spectrum is then calculated from the input PSD data and is used to design an accelerated fatigue life testing. The PSD for the shaker table test is derived that has the equivalent fatigue damage to the original input signal. The tests were performed considering the combined effect of random vibration and elevated temperature, and the product passed all the planned tests. It was successfully demonstrated that the inverter used in this study could survive environmental vibration up to its guarantee period. The fatigue damage spectrum can effectively be used to design accelerated fatigue life testing.
Stay cables play an essential role in cable-stayed bridges. Severe vibrations and/or harsh environment may result in cable failures. Therefore, an efficient structural health monitoring (SHM) solution for cable damage detection is necessary. This study proposes a data-driven method for immediately detecting cable damage from measured cable forces by recognizing pattern transition from the intact condition when damage occurs. In the proposed method, pattern recognition for cable damage detection is realized by time series classification (TSC) using a deep learning (DL) model, namely, the long short term memory fully convolutional network (LSTM-FCN). First, a TSC classifier is trained and validated using the cable forces (or cable force ratios) collected from intact stay cables, setting the segmented data series as input and the cable (or cable pair) ID as class labels. Subsequently, the classifier is tested using the data collected under possible damaged conditions. Finally, the cable or cable pair corresponding to the least classification accuracy is recommended as the most probable damaged cable or cable pair. A case study using measured cable forces from an in-service cable-stayed bridge shows that the cable with damage can be correctly identified using the proposed DL-TSC method. Compared with existing cable damage detection methods in the literature, the DL-TSC method requires minor data preprocessing and feature engineering and thus enables fast and convenient early detection in real applications.
Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is an environmental pollutant that has been implicated in carcinogenesis. Saccharomyces cerevisiae was treated with B[a]P, and the responses of its cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme and DNA-damage checkpoint genes were examined through gene expression profiles using a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The DNA-damage checkpoint genes tested were the chk1 and pds1 genes, involved in a metaphase arrest, the swi6 gene targeted by G1 arrest, the pol2 gene related to S phase arrest, and the cln2 gene encoding a cyclin protein, all of which are based on rad9 and rad24. Among these genes, no noticeable effect was found when the cells were exposed to various concentrations of B[a]P. However, the transcriptional activity of CYP51 was significantly different when the cells were exposed to B[a]P. Accordingly, the present results indicate that cytochrome P450 plays a more significant role than DNA-damage checkpoint genes in the response of S. cerevisiae to B[a]P.
