20 bacterial strains capable of growing on phenol minimal medium were isolated from soil and wastewater by the enrichment culture technique, and among them, one isolate which was the best in the cell growth was selected and identified as Bacillus sp. SH3 by its characteristics. Strain SH3 could grow with phenol as the sole carbon source up to 15 mM, but did not grow in minimal medium containing above 20 mM of phenol. The optimal conditions of temperature and initial pH for growth and phenol degradation were 30$^{\circ}$C and 7.5, respectively. This strain could grow on various aromatic compounds such as catechol, protocatechuic acid, gentisic acid, o-, m-, p-cresol, benzoic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, anthranilic acid, phenyl acetate and pentachlorophenol, and the growth-limiting log P value of strain SH3 on organic solvents was 3.1. In batch culture, strain SH3 degraded 97% of 10 mM phenol in 48 hours. In continuous culture under the conditions of 20 mM of influent phenol concentration and 0.050 hr$^{-1}$ of dilution rate, the treatment rate of phenol was 94%.
Six-hundred bacterial strains from human milk and milk from Sahiwal cows, Holstein Friesian cows, and buffaloes were screened for their ability to suppress phytopathogenic fungi under in vitro conditions. A consortium of 3 strains, viz., Bacillus lentimorbus B-30486 (B-30486), B. subtilis B-30487 (B-30487), and B. lentimorbus B-30488 (B-30488), isolated from Sahiwal cow milk resulted in better biological control and plant-growth promotion than single-strain treatments. For commercial-scale production of a bioinoculant, the solid-state fermentation of sugarcane agro-industrial residues, i.e., molasses, press mud, and spent wash, using the consortium of B-30486, B-30487, and B-30488, resulted in a value-added product, useful for enhancing plant growth. The application of the consortium to sugarcane fields infested with Fusarium moniliforme and Colletotrichum falcatum resulted in a reduction of mortality and significantly higher (P=0.05) plant height, number of tillers, and cane girth when compared with the control. Furthermore, under field conditions, the treatment of sugarcane with the consortium resulted in significantly (P=0.05) greater plant growth compared with nonbacterized plants. Accordingly, this is the first report on the effective use of bacteria isolated from milk for biological control and enhancing plant growth under field conditions. Furthormore, a solid-state fermentation technology was developed that facilitates the economic utilization of agro-industrial residues for environmental conservation and improving plant and soil health.
For the effective seedling production of the hard shelled mussel, Mytilus coruscus, this study assessed the effects of the dietary value of live food, density, water temperature and salinity on growth and survival rate of the larvae. The optimal survival rate and growth rate were examined under differing conditions of water temperature, salinity, and rearing density for 30 days. The three groups were provided different feeding organisms, such as Isochrysis galbana and Teleaulax suecica. The mixtures were provided at a rate of $5{\times}10^4cell\;mL^{-1}$. The best growth was observed in the group with conditions $21^{\circ}C$ water temperature ($16.2{\pm}9.1{\mu}m$), 33 psu of salinity ($16.82{\pm}3.9{\mu}m$), $2500individual\;m^{-2}$ ($17.2{\pm}5.9{\mu}m$), and fed with $5{\times}10^4cell\;mL^{-1}$ of I. galbana and T. suecica mixture ($16.0{\pm}7.3{\mu}m$). The highest survival rate was found in the group at conditions $18^{\circ}C$ water temperature (66.4%), 33 psu of salinity (24.4%), $2500individual\;m^{-2}$ (65.8%), and fed with $5{\times}10^4cell\;mL^{-1}$ of I. galbana and T. suecica mixture (58.8%). We therefore conclude that the suitable culture conditions for the stable production of hard shelled mussel artificial seedlings was at 18 to $21^{\circ}C$ of temperature, 30 to 33 psu of salinity, 2500 to $5000individual\;m^{-2}$ of rearing density, and feeding supplement of $5{\times}10^4cell\;mL^{-1}$ of I. galbana and T. suecica mixture under semi running water system.

The effects of hydrodynamics and alum dose on particle growth were investigated by monitoring particle counts in a rapid mixing process. Experiments were performed to measure the particle growth and breakup under various conditions. The rapid mixing scheme consisted of the following operating parameters: Velocity gradient (G) ($200-300s^{-1}$), alum dose (10-50 mg/L) and mixing time (30-180 s). The Poisson regression model was applied to assess the effects of the doses and velocity gradient with mixing time. The mechanism for the growth and breakup of particles was elucidated. An increase in alum dose was found to accelerate the particle count reduction. The particle count at a G value of $200s^{-1}$ decreased more rapidly than those at $300s^{-1}$. The growth and breakup of larger particles were more clearly observed at higher alum doses. Variations of particles due to aggregation and breakup of micro-flocs in rapid mixing step were interactively affected by G, mixing time and alum dose. Micro-flocculation played an important role in a rapid mixing process.

This study was conducted to develop the simple and convenient irrigation control model which can maintain the appropriate rates of irrigation and drainage of nutrient solution according to the environmental conditions and growth stages in soilless culture of cucumber. In order to obtain fundamental data for development of the model, investigation of the actual state of soilless culture practices was carried out. Most irrigation systems of soilless culture were controlled by the time clock. Evapotranspiration of cucumber in soilless culture was investigated and correlations with environmental conditions were analyzed, and its prediction model was developed. A irrigation control model based on the time clock control and there were considered seasons, weather conditions, and growth stages was developed. Applicability of the model was tested by simulation. Drainage rates of irrigation system controlled by conventional time clock, integrated solar radiation, and the developed model were 61%, 20%, and 32%, respectively in cucumber perlite culture.

This study investigated how the combined changes in environmental conditions and nitrogen (N) deposition influence the mineralization processes and carbon (C) dynamics of wetland soil. For this objective, we conducted a growth chamber experiment to examine the effects of combined changes in environmental conditions and N deposition on the anaerobic decomposition of organic carbon and the emission of greenhouse gases from wetland soil. A chamber with elevated $CO_2$ and temperature showed almost twice the reduction of total decomposition rate compared to the chamber with ambient atmospheric conditions. In addition, $CO_2$ fluxes decreased during the incubation under the conditions of ambient $CO_2$ and temperature. The decrease in anaerobic microbial metabolism resulted from the presence of vegetation, which influences the litter quality of soils. This can be supported by the increase in C/N ratio over the experimental duration. Principle component analysis results demonstrated the opposite locations of loadings for the cases at the initial time and after three months of incubation, which indicates a reduction in the decomposition rate and an increasing C/N ratio during the incubation. From the distribution between the decomposition rate and gas fluxes, we concluded that anaerobic decomposition rates do not have a significantly positive relationship with the fluxes of greenhouse gas emissions from the soil.
In order to investigate and generalize the effects of carbon and nitrogen sources on the growth of and lipid production in Chlorella sp. 227, several nutritional combinations consisting of different carbon and nitrogen sources and concentrations were given to the media for cultivation of Chlorella sp. 227, respectively. The growth rate and lipid content were affected largely by concentration rather than by sources. The maximum specific growth was negatively affected by low concentrations of carbon and nitrogen. There is a maximum allowable inorganic carbon concentration (less than 500~1,000 mM bicarbonate) in autotrophic culture, but the maximum lipid content per gram dry cell weight (g DCW) was little affected by the concentration of inorganic carbon within the concentration. The lipid content per g DCW was increased when the microalga was cultured with the addition of glucose and bicarbonate (mixotrophic) at a fixed nitrogen concentration and with the lowest nitrogen concentration (0.2 mM), relatively. Considering that lipid contents per g DCW increased in those conditions, it suggests that a high ratio of carbon to nitrogen in culture media promotes lipid accumulation in the cells. Interestingly, a significant increase of the oleic acid amount to total fatty acids was observed in those conditions. These results showed the possibility to induce lipid production of high quality and content per g DCW by modifying the cultivation conditions.

Recently the roof gardening has become very popular and even on the apartment-veranda and on the roofs in high buildings many kinds of vegetables and berries are cultivated. And the demand of the nutritional supplement for the effective plant growth is also increasing. The general urban conditions are to be adapted for plant growth. A different hygroscopic and temperature-conditions after regions, sunshine and wind have strong influences on the plant growth and usually it is not optimal enough. It is because why a nutritional condition in soil for plant growth so important and essential. The usual compound-soil or -fertilizer cannot offer enough quantities of nutrients for plant growth and additional soil conditioner becomes more necessary. There are many kinds of soil conditioners like hydrogel in the market and we studied on Geohumus, Montigel and Geko, which are widely used in Europe and other countries. Water absorption and microbial immobilization with effective microorganisms were tested and compared. The EM solution was identified as bacteria, fungi and azotobacter etc. and they were immobilized at the soil conditioners at first. And the cultivated and immobilized at the soil conditioners EM-solution was added to the plant soil. 1 g of the soil conditioners absorbed ca. 20 g of water. The plant grew 10 cm more, got 3 times more branches and 2 times more fruits in the soil with soil conditioners immobilized with microorganisms. With water addition the plant with both conditions in the soil could stay fresh in comparison to without soil conditioners.
BACKGROUND: Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with lower electric cost and the specific wavelength have been considering as a novel light source for plant production in greenhouse conditions as well as in a closed culture system. Supplementary lighting for day-length extension was considered as light intensity, light quality, and/or photoperiod control on plant growth and development. Effects of supplementary blue or red LED radiation with lower light intensity on growth of Ageratum (Ageratum houstonianum Mill., cv. Blue Field), African marigold (Tagetes erecta L., cv. Orange Boy), and Salvia (Salvia splendens F. Sello ex Ruem & Schult., cv. Red Vista) were discussed during sunrise and sunset twilight in the experiment. METHODS AND RESULTS: Supplementary lighting by blue and red LEDs for 30 (Treatment B30; R30) or 60 (Treatment B60; R60) min. per day were established in greenhouse conditions. Photosynthetic photon flux for supplementary radiation was kept at $15{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ on the culture bed. Natural condition without supplementary light was considered as a control. The highest shoot and root dry weights were shown in African marigold exposed by red light for 60 min. per day. Supplementary blue and red lighting regardless of the radiation time significantly stimulated development of lateral branches in African marigold. Stem growth in Ageratum and Salvia seedlings was significantly promoted by red radiation as well as natural light. CONCLUSIONS: Extending of the radiation time at sunrise and sunset twilight using LEDs stimulated reproductive growth of flowering plant species. Different characteristics on growth under supplementary blue or red lighting conditions were also observed in the seedlings during supplementary radiation.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of shading conditions for appropriate light level for several floricultural plants native to Korea. The results under the different shading levels of 0, 30, 50, 60% and full sun light are as follows; Growth of Miscanthus sinensis and Pennisetum alopecuroides, which are heliophyte plants, were better under 30% shading condition than full sunlight. Higher shading levels was poor than control. Growth of Sedum spectable was decreased when light intensity was decreased. As shading level increased, growth reduction rate in Sedum spectable were higher than that of other species. Growth and ornamental value of Arisaema amurense, which is sciophyte plants, were increased under 50% shading.
