  • Purpose This study empirically investigates the impact of information technology(IT) investments on the financial and non-financial performance of a manufacturing firm. We examined the interaction effects of IT investments and strategic applications levels of information systems(IS). This study also demonstrated the three-way interaction effects of IT investments, levels of IS strategic applications, and perceived environmental uncertainty(PEU). Design/methodology/approach For this study, empirical data were collected from 98 manufacturing firms with the structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed with multiple regression models, and partial derivatives were utilized to identify the directions of the impact. Findings From the empirical results, it was found that when both the levels of IS strategic applications and the degrees of IT investments are high, the ratios of the costs of goods sold to total sales(RCGS) and the labor costs to total sales(RLCS) are decreased, as it were, the performance of a firm is improved. However, it was observed that when the levels of strategic IS are low, the high degrees of IT investments do not contribute to the improvement of a performance. The results showed that when the levels of strategic IS are high, the high degrees of IT investments incur the high RSAE not low RSAE. When PEU is considered, the empirical results showed that under the low degrees of PEU, the IT investments under high levels of strategic IS applications (strategic IT investments) improve the performance, as it were, low RCGS, and high degrees of perceived financial and non-financial performance. However, under high PEU, it was observed that high degrees of strategic IT investments do not increase the performance. When PEU is high, the strategic IT investments reduce RSAE, and under low PEU, RSAE is increased.

  • Environmental biosensors and related techniques for monitoring organochlorines, endocrine disrupting chemicals and cyanobacterial toxins are described. The practical requirements for an ideal environmental biosensor are analyzed. Specific case studies for environmental applications are reported for triazines, chlorinated phenols, PCBs, microcystins, and endocrine disrupting chemicals. A new promising approach is reported for microcystins and alkylphenols that utilize electrooptical detection.

  • Environmental specimen bank (ESB) is a new tool to assess ecosystem in environmental impact assessment (EIA). ESB looks at changes in the concentration of pollutants in human and environmental specimens over long periods of time through retrospective analysis of archived samples. Korea started to design its National Environmental Specimen Bank (NESB) in 2007 and planned to launch an operational pilot project by 2010. NESB prepares five Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of shoots of Red and Korean pine, leaves of Mongolian oak, Pigeon's egg, and Common carp's muscle out of 14 planned specimens in 2009. ESB contributes to monitoring the effectiveness of EIA projects and policies by providing a time capsule through ecosystem assessment of representative species. This study reviews ecosystem assessment in EIA and the ESB establishment in Korea and probes NESB applications in ecosystem assessment.

  • With a theme of the ‘Environmental Education in Middle Schools’ and ‘Open Education’, this study has been aimed to suggest the improvements for environmental education through ‘Open Education’, which is nowadays emphasized in Korea. This study suggests that the following should be concluded in the syllabic for the environmental education; the environmental problems and their relations to the environments] education, the establishment of the model of environmental education system, the goal of environmental education and its characteristics, the analysis of environment-related subjects' contents, the teaching-learning methods for environmental education, and the applications of ‘Open Education’ to the environmental education. This study has found that the ‘Open Education’ would play a great role in increasing the effect of the environmental education, and thus it strongly recommends, as a necessity, that teaching skills and text for it should be developed as soon as possible.

  • Various seeding materials for cloud seeding are being used, and sodium chloride powder is one of them, which is commonly used. This study analyzed the experimental results of multi-aircraft cloud seeding in connection with Republic of Korea Air Force (CN235) and KMA/NIMS(Korea Meteorological Administration/National Institute of Meteorological Sciences) Atmospheric Research Aircraft. Powdered sodium chloride was used in CN235 for the first time in South Korea. The analysis of the cloud particle size distributions and radar reflectivity before and after cloud seeding showed that the growth efficiency of powdery seeding material in the cloud is slightly higher than that of hygroscopic flare composition in the distribution of number concentrations by cloud aerosol particle diameter (10 ~ 1000 ㎛). Considering the radar reflectivity, precipitation, and numerical model simulation, the enhanced precipitation due to cloud seeding was calculated to be a maximum of 3.7 mm for 6 hours. The simulated seeding effect area was about 3,695 km2, which corresponds to 13,634,550 tons of water. In the precipitation component analysis, as a direct verification method, the ion equivalent concentrations (Na+, Cl-, Ca2+) of the seeding material at the Bukgangneung site were found to be about 1000 times higher than those of other non-affected areas between about 1 and 2 hours after seeding. This study suggests the possibility of continuous multi-aircraft cloud seeding experiments to accumulate and increase the amount of precipitation enhancement.

  • A strong oxidative stress-inducible peroxidase promoter (referred to as SWPA2 promoter) was cloned from tell cultures of sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) and characterized in transgenic tobacco cultured cells in terms of biotechnological applications. Employing a transient expression assay in tobacco protoplasts, with five different 5'-deletion mutants of the SWPA2 promoter fused to the $\beta$-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene, the 1314 bp deletion mutant showed approximately 30 times higher GUS expression than the CaMV 35S promoter. The expression of GUS activity in suspension cultures of transgenic cells derived from transgenic tobacco leaves containing the -1314 bp SWPA2 promoter-GUS fusion was strongly expressed following 15 days of subculture compared to other deletion mutants, suggesting that the 1314 bp SWPA2 promoter will be biotechnologically useful for the development of transgenic cell lines engineered to produce key pharmaceutical proteins. In this respect, we developed transgenic cell lines such as tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. BY-2), ginseng (Panax ginseng) and Siberian ginseng (Acanthopanax senticosus) using a SWPA2 promoter to produce a human lactoferrin (hLf) and characterized the hLf production in cultured cells. The hLf production monitored by ELISA analysis in transgenic BY-2 cells was directly increased proportional to cell growth and reached a maximal level (up to 4.3% of total soluble protein) at the stationary phase in suspension cultures. The SWPA2 promoter should result in higher productivity and increased applications of plant cultured cells for the production of high-value recombinant proteins.
