  • When the COVID-19 crisis hit air transport, the whole aviation industry was affected. The change in the behavior of passengers following the COVID-19 crisis, travel restrictions and the ensuing economic crisis have resulted in a dramatic drop in demand for airline services. The COVID-19 pandemic, with all its associated consequences, has had a significant impact on the mental health and well-being of pilots, which could impact operational safety. As the number of international flights has decreased, pilots are exposed to high levels of psychological stress such as job instability, reduced income and increased risk of infection during flight work. Psychological stress lowers work performance and threatens aviation safety. The pilot needs mental health management during the COVID-19 pandemic, but psychological support is weak. For pilot mental health management, it is important to raise awareness about mental health and to continuously respond. To this end, it is necessary to foster a safe and trustworthy culture in which mental health issues are discussed freely and solved together without hiding them. They should also support the establishment of a peer support program that is easily accessible and that allows pilots to discuss their issues with confidence.

  • Double-front construction machinery, which was designed for complicated tasks, requires intelligent systems that can provide the quantitative work analysis needed to determine effective work procedures and that can provide operational and cognitive support for operators. Construction work environments are extremely complicated, however, and this makes state identification difficult. We therefore defined primitive static states (PSS) that are determined using on-off data for the lever inputs and manipulator loads for each part of the grapple and front and that are completely independent of the various environmental conditions and operator skill levels. To confirm the usefulness of PSS, we performed experiments with a demolition task by using our virtual reality simulator. We confirmed that PSS could robustly and accurately identify the work states and that untrained skills could be easily inferred from the PSS-based work analysis. We also confirmed in skill-training experiments that advice information using PSS-based skill analysis greatly improved work performance. We thus confirmed that PSS can adequately identify work states and are useful for work analysis and skill improvement.

  • This paper proposes a novel cooling system for hydrogen fuel cell cooling systems by integrating heat pump technology to enhance operational efficiency. The study analyzed the cooling efficiency of the fuel cell cooling system. With the increasing focus on eco-friendly vehicle technologies to address environmental concerns and global warming, the transportation sector, a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, needs technological enhancements for better efficiency. The proposed cooling system was modeled through 1-D simulations. The analysis results of parameters such as thermal balance, temperature, and pressure of each component confirmed the stable operation of the system. By examining variations in the cooling system's flow rate, compressor RPM, and the Coefficient of Performance (COP) based on different refrigerants, initial research was conducted to derive optimal operating conditions and parameter values.

  • This paper proposes a fault detection method for blade pitch systems of floating wind turbines using transformer-based deep-learning models. Transformers leverage self-attention mechanisms, efficiently process time-series data, and capture long-term dependencies more effectively than traditional recurrent neural networks (RNNs). The model was trained using normal operational data to detect anomalies through high reconstruction losses when encountering abnormal data. In this study, various fault conditions in a blade pitch system, including environmental load cases, were simulated using a detailed model of a spar-type floating wind turbine, the data collected from these simulations were used to train and test the transformer models. The model demonstrated superior fault-detection capabilities with high accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 scores. The results show that the proposed method successfully identifies faults and achieves high-performance metrics, outperforming existing traditional multi-layer perceptron (MLP) models and long short-term memory-autoencoder (LSTM-AE) models. This study highlights the potential of transformer models for real-time fault detection in wind turbines, contributing to more advanced condition-monitoring systems with minimal human intervention.

  • Anomaly detection for the penetration rate of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is crucial for effective risk management in TBM tunnel projects. However, previous machine learning models for predicting the penetration rate have struggled with imbalanced data between normal and abnormal penetration rates. This study aims to enhance the performance of machine learning-based anomaly detection for the penetration rate by utilizing a data augmentation technique to address this data imbalance. Initially, six input features were selected through correlation analysis. The lowest and highest 10% of the penetration rates were designated as abnormal classes, while the remaining penetration rates were categorized as a normal class. Two prediction models were developed, each trained on an original training set and an oversampled training set constructed using SMOTE (synthetic minority oversampling technique): an XGB (extreme gradient boosting) model and an XGB-SMOTE model. The prediction results showed that the XGB model performed poorly for the abnormal classes, despite performing well for the normal class. In contrast, the XGB-SMOTE model consistently exhibited superior performance across all classes. These findings can be attributed to the data augmentation for the abnormal penetration rates using SMOTE, which enhances the model's ability to learn patterns between geological and operational factors that contribute to abnormal penetration rates. Consequently, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of employing data augmentation to manage imbalanced data in anomaly detection for TBM penetration rates.

  • Hydrocyclone is widely used in industry, because of its simplicity in design, high capacity, low maintenance and operational cost. The separation action of a hydrocyclone treating particulate slurry is a consequence of the swirling flow that produces a centrifugal force on the fluid and suspended particles. In spite of hydrocyclone have many advantage, the application for treatment of urban stormwater case study were rare. We conducted a laboratory scale study on treatable potential of micro particles using hydrocyclone filter (HCF) that was a combined modified hydrocyclone with perlite filter cartridge. Since it was not easy to use actual storm water in the scaled-down hydraulic model investigations, it was necessary to reproduce ranges of particles sizes with synthetic materials. The synthesized storm runoff was made with water and addition of particles; ion exchange resin, road sediment, commercial area manhole sediment, and silica gel particles. Experimental studies have been carried out about the particle separation performance of HCF-open system and HCF-closed system. The principal structural differences of these HCFs are underflow zone structure and vortex finder. HCF was made of acryl resin with 120 mm of diameter hydrocyclone and 250 mm of diameter filter chamber and overall height of 800 mm. To determine the removal efficiency for various influent concentrations of suspended solids (SS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), tests were performed with different operational conditions. The operated maximum of surface loading rate was about 700 $m^3/m^2$/day for HCF-open system, and 1,200 $m^3/m^2$/day for HCF-closed system. It was found that particle removal efficiency for the HCF-closed system is better than the HCF-open system under same surface loading rate. Results showed that SS removal efficiency with the HCF-closed system improved by about 8~20% compared with HCF-open system. The average removal efficiency difference for HCF-closed system between measurement and CFD particle tracking simulation was about 4%.

  • This study proposed the method of phosphate recovery from municipal wastewater by using ferrous iron waste, generated from the mechanical process in the steel industry. In the analysis of XRD, ferrous iron waste was composed of $Fe_3O_4$ (magnetite), practically with $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$. It had inverse spinel structure. In order to identify the adsorption characteristic of phosphate on ferrous iron waste, isotherm adsorption test was designed. Experimental results were well analyzed by Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm theories. Empirical constants of all isotherms applied increased with alkalinity in the samples, ranging from 1.2 to 235 $CaCO_3/L$. In the regeneration test, empirical constants of Langmuir isotherm, i.e., $q_{max}$ (maximum adsorption capacity) and b (energy of adsorption) decreased as the frequency of regeneration was increased. Experiment was further performed to evaluate the performance of the treatment scheme of chemical precipitation by ferrous iron waste followed by biological aerated filter (BAF). The overall removal efficiency in the system increased up to 80% and 90% for total phosphate (TP) and soluble phosphate (SP), respectively, and the corresponding effluent concentrations were detected below 2 mg/L and 1 mg/L for TP and SP, respectively. However, short-circuit problem was still unsolved operational consideration in this system. The practical concept applied in this study will give potential benefits in achieving environmentally sound wastewater treatment as well as environmentally compatible waste disposal in terms of closed substance cycle waste management.

  • Anaerobic digestion of municipal solid waste(MSW) is recently getting attention due to energy generation and abatement of global warming. MSW has high solid content and low nitrogen content. Its major component is cellulose and hemicellulose. The conversion rate of organic portion of MSW to methane is approximately 50%, representing $0.2m^3/kg$ VS. Long hydraulic retention time is required for high solid content and inoculum should be mixed with the feed. When MSW is digested anaerobically, maximum limit of C/N ratio is 25 and the optimum concentration of $NH_3-N$ is 700mg/L. lime and sodium bicarbonate are used to adjust pH. Excess addition of sodium bicarbonate above 3,500mg/L will cause sodium toxicity. Thermophilic anaerobic digestion is effective in the control of pathogen although its operation and maintenance is difficult. To optimize the anaerobic digestion of MSW, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of microorganims involved in anaerobic digestion.

  • The Intermittent Aeration MBR systems have the advantage of controlling reaction time by changing aeration period and are one of economic BNR systems since these processes do not require MLSS recirculation that demands capital and operation costs. In this study, two intermittent aeration MBR systems were studied by computer simulation: an intermittent aeration MBR system that had both 1hr/1hr and 4hr/4hr aeration/unaeration periods at intermittent reactor and NEW INTERMITTENT-process that was an energy saving process and certified as a new process by Korean government. Since DO concentration reached only at 0.23mg/L at intermittent reactor when it was aerated, the Intermittent aeration MBR system having 1hr/1hr aeration/unaeration period showed simultaneous nitrification/denitrification and had the highest nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies that were 57% and 55%, respectively. Since this study was based on the constant influent flow and characteristics, more studies are needed to define the operational characteristics of intermittent aeration MBR systems under dynamic influent conditions.
