  • This study was conducted to evaluate the functions of green spaces for the environment amelioration in Chongju City. The results obtained from this study were as follows; 1. Total amounts of $SO_2$ and $NO_2$ which can be absorbed by green spaces in Chongju City from EPA model were calculated as 27,655 tons and l,551 tons per year, respectively. 2. It was estimated that more green spaces were needed to mitigate the effect of air pollutants emitted from industrial complex at Songjung-Dong, Bokdae-Dong and Sachang-Dong in Chongju City. This is acquired as a result of overlaying the map of administrative district, forest state, and $SO_2$ isoline using GIS method. 3. The amounts of green spaces and the selection of their proper location have to be considered at the stage of city planning and in this case, the amounts of air pollutants are also considered.

  • EIA(Environmental Impact Assessment) was introduced in 1979 by our gorvernment to cope with serious environmental problems. Recently environmental pollution has been controlled severely than ever because pollution phenomena became more comlpicated and arrcordingly the damage more terrible. For the EIA system to achieve its goal effectively, systematic and scientific approach should be found out. For this reason the techniqes such as GIS(Geographic Information System) and RS(Remote Sensing) come to front strongly. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the application techniqes of GIS and RS to the EIA system. Haw-Won Myen, Hae-Nam Gun, Chun-Nam and its related area, which will be developed to be a sightseeing area, were selected as the study area. Applications of GIS resulted some important outcome such as earthwork calculations, landuse models, aspect maps, stability of slanting surfaces, elevation models, estimation of real estates, etc. GIS applied EIA proved to be very useful for the project managers and planners to plan, evaluate, judge the enviormental problems.

  • In rapidly developing urban areas that include high-rise, large, and complex buildings, indoor and outdoor maps in GIS become a basis for utilizing and sharing information pertaining to various aspects of the real world. Although an indoor mapping has gained much attentions, research efforts are mostly in 2D and 3D modeling of terrain and buildings. Therefore, to facilitate fast and accurate construction of indoor GIS, this paper proposes a semi-automatic method consisting of preprocessing, 2D mapping, and 3D mapping stages. The preprocessing is designed to estimate heights of building interiors and to identify noise data from point clouds. In the 2D mapping, a floor map is extracted with a tracing grid and a refinement method. In the 3D mapping, a 3D wireframe model is created with heights from the preprocessing stage. 3D mesh data converted from noise data is combined with the 3D wireframe model for detail modeling. The proposed method was applied to point clouds depicting a hallway in a building. Experiment results indicate that the proposed method can be utilized to construct 2D and 3D maps for indoor GIS.

  • Oyster production is playing an important role in domestic aquaculture, but facing some problems such as exports decrease, a slowdown in domestic demand and marine environmental deterioration. In order to obtain the suitable and sustainable oyster production, suitable sites selection is an important step in oyster aquaculture. This study was conducted to identify the suitable sites for lunging culture of oyster using Geographic Information System(GIS)-based multi-criteria evaluation methods. Most of the parameters were extracted by Inverse Distance Weighted(IDW) methods in GIS and eight parameters were grouped into two basic sub-models for oyster aquaculture, namely oyster growth sub-model(Sea Temperature, Salinity, Hydrodynamics, Chlorophyll-a) and environment sub-model(Bottom DO, TOC, Sediment AVS, Benthic Diversity). Suitability scores were ranked on a scale from 1(leased suitable) and 8(most suitable), and about 80.1% of the total potential area had the highest scores 5 and 6. These areas were shown to have the optimum condition for oyster culture in GeojeHansan Bay. This method to identify suitable sites for oyster culture may be used to develop bivalve culture management system for supporting a decision making.

  • In order to evaluate landslide susceptibility in Yanbian region, this study analyzed 7 factors related to landslide occurrence, such as soil, geology, land use, slope, slope aspect, fault and river by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and calculated the weights of these 7 hazard-induced factors, determined the internal weights and the relative weights between various factors. According to these weights, combining the Remote Sensing technology (RS) with Geographic Information System technology (GIS), the selected area was evaluated by using GIS raster data analysis function, then landslide susceptibility chart was mapped out. The comprehensive analysis of AHP and GIS showed that there has unstable area with the potential risk of sliding in the research area. The result of landslide susceptibility agrees well with the historical landslides, which proves the accuracy of adopted methods and hazard-induced factors.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze shear fracture system using landslide location occurred 1998 at Janghung area. For the geological implication, foliation was surveyed and analyzed, and location of landslide, geological structure and topography were constructed into spatial database using GIS. With the constructed spatial database, shear fracture system was assessed by the relation analysis between strike and dip of the foliation and aspect and slope of the topography. We compared strike and dip of foliation and aspect and slope of topography and recognized the typical fracture pattern, strike and dip of joint, that coincided with shear fracture system. The result tells us that foliation of gneiss has geometrical relation to joint or fault that leading landslide. GIS was used to analyze vast data efficiently and the result can be used to assess the landslide susceptibility as important factor.
