  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of field-trip based environmental education on young children's environmental literacy. The subjects for the study Were the 40 children of five years old at two nursery centers in province. The questionnaire and checklist for parents and the children developed by the researcher were used in this study. The conclusion were as follows. First, the care center environmental education improved the young children's saving, and anti-pollution depending on their mother is reported. Second, the care center environmental education improved the young children's saving, recycling and anti-pollution depending on their teacher is reported. Results showed that the field-trip based environmental education improved environmental literacy.

  • Recent urban sprawl has destroyed various kinds of green space in tile city. It has affected duality of people's life in the city, as well as urban ecosystem. Recent study shows the possibilities of roofs as green spaces in urban central site where the land costs are generally high. This research focuses on Jung-Gu district in Daegu Metropolitan city as a study area and calculates possible area of green roof using 2002 Autocad program based on aerial photographs and land registration maps. And the purpose of this research is to analyze environmental and economic effects of green roof. The environmental effects are as follows. It is expected that $91,106m^2$ green spaces, 12.13 % of study site, will be added if green roof is performed in the study site. It is assumed that the expanded areas could reduce the highest temperature to $0.5-1.0^{\circ}C$ during the summer in terms of environmental effect. And the following shows the economic effects. If green roof and greening urban central site are created as a same size of $91,106m^2$, it will be expected that the costs of green roof will be much more in-expensive than about 98 billions won. It will be also found that the expense of cooling energy can be saved out about 8 millions won per day in summer, if grass planting is accomplished on the possible areas of green roof in the study site. Therefore, it is desirable to take legal supports such as enacting regulations to activate green roof for more environmental and economic effects. For instance, green roof for public institutions, school and model area selection are desirable method to publicize the effect of greening program for citizen's participation.

  • Bisphenol A and other alkylphenols are widely used in plastic and other industrial consumer products. Release of these compounds into the aquatic environment during their manufacture, use and disposal has been a great scientific and public concern due to their toxicity at high concentrations and endocrine disrupting effects at low concentration on aquatic wildlife and human beings. This paper reviews the published data and researches on the environmental occurrence, distribution, health effects and analytical techniques of bisphenol A and alkylphenols. The aim is to provide an overview of the current understanding about bisphenol A and alkylphenols in the environment and the difficulties faced today in order to establish standard and systematic environmental analysis and assessment process for these endocrine disruptor compounds.

  • Forest soils are often nitrogen-limited, and nitrogen input to forest soils can cause substantial changes in the structure and functions of a soil ecosystem. To determine the effects of nitrogen input on methane oxidation and the microbial enzyme activities, manipulation experiments were conducted using nitrogen addition to soil samples from Mt. Jumbong. Our findings suggested that the addition of nitrogen to the soil system of Mt. Jumbong did not affect the microbial enzyme activities. Conversely, the addition of nitrogen affected the rate of methane oxidation. Inorganic nitrogen in soils can inhibit methane oxidation via several mechanisms, such as substrate competition, toxic effects, and competition with other microbes, but the inhibitory effects are not always the same. In this research, seasonal changes were found to produce different inhibitory factors, and these different responses may be caused from differences in the methantrophic bacteria community structure.

  • Nevertheless the serious environmental pollution in Korea has been discussed in concern with health effect, the significant effect are not determined easily. Toxicological method has been used to establish safe levels of exposure for environmental pollutants to have threshold health effect below which significant effects are unlikely to occur. However the conventional method cannot to establish safe levels of exposure for non-threshold pollutants have been used to express comprehensive pollution degree, not in detailed toxic effects. Acceptable exposure or risk levels are decides by policymakers who consider descriptions and estimates of risks together with social and economic benefits. This paper focuses on the concept development of risk assessment and describes some risks of environmental pollution based on the surveyed date in Korea. The current concepts of risk assessment in policy descisions can be explored and areas for possible improvement, given current scientific knowledge are identified. The experience of foreign countries can provide a realistic basis for evaluating the existing data of environmental pollutants. To improve the environmental quality, risk regulation should be managed as soon as possible in Korea.

  • The toxicity of environmental pollutants was measured between a image of the surface topography in HeLa cells using atomic force microscopy for the possibility of toxic effect measurement and environmental monitoring. A image of the surface topography by AFM were estimated as toxic endpoints. The surface topography by AFM was observed a change of the cell surface in the environmental pollutants, but the standard of the measurement requires for the dose-effect degree. The overall results indicate that the possibility of measurement using AFM were confirmed a dose-effect degree related toxic effects, but it requres correlation between more various biomarker and AFM's measurements if the possibility of the toxic effect measurement was established.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate youth's nature experiences and environmental perception and to analyze the effects of nature experiences on environmental perception. The study was conducted by review of literature and survey. The data were collected from 146 youths in youth activities by random sampling. Major findings of the study were as follows: Firstly, youths who live in small city and have experiences in rural area showed higher average of rearing animal and plants experience than others and youths who are in high school and get upper academic achievement have higher travelling experience than others. Secondly, female youths were higher average of environmental conservation intention than males. Thirdly, learning experience about nature and sex variables influence on environmental conservation intension and age and residence influence on environmental practice. In conclusion, the study suggests youths should have opportunity on nature experience programs for developing environmental perception.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relations between using experience of environmental education facilities and attitude toward environmental education in parents who have elementary students in Seattle, U.S. The findings of this study represented that elementary parents have a great understanding about the importance of environmental education. Parents have a strong agreement with the necessity of environmental education in childhood. This research also found the differences between grades and facilities for environmental education in expected effect on environmental education and desirable fields of environmental education. The awareness of the importance of environmental education increased according to frequency in using environmental education facilities. In addition, the more the experiences of using various environmental education facilities, such as museum of natural history, science museum, arboretum, and aquarium expanded, the more educational effects positively increased over time.

  • The objectives of railway construction and operation are transportation of passenger and freight safely and punctually. However, environmental effects such as noise, vibration, air pollution, underground water pollution and change of biosphere are emerged caused by train pass-bys. To avoid these adverse effects, new railway system has been developed around the world. This paper introduces LRT system and its environmental advantages. An environmental consideration for LRT design and adoptability for Korean situation are studied for the more.
