  • This study was conducted to remove the color in dyeing wastewater by ozone oxidation process, and the results were summarized as follows ; The 18.3% of BOD and 56.3% TOC were removed as decreasing with pH 1 in dyeing wastewater, containing the polyester reducing process. It showed that terephthalic acid was precipitated at low pH. The color of dyeing wastewater was removed by the first order reaction, and the reaction rate constants at pH 3, 7, 12 were investigated $0.234{\;}min^{-1},{\;}0.215{\;}min^{-1}{\;}and{\;}0.201{\;}min^{-1}$ respectively. It showed that color was more effectively removed with direct reaction of ozone than radical reaction(non-direct reaction). As increasing of the water temperature, the reaction rate constants were increased slightly. It indicated that activity of ozone was improved at high water temperature.

  • Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI), the World's first spaceborne ocean color observation satellite operated in geostationary orbit, was successfully launched on May 2010. The main missions of GOCI is the coastal environment monitoring of GOCI in order to meet the necessity of long-term climate change monitoring and research. The GOCI have higher spatial resolution than MODIS, $500m{\times}500m$, and 8 spectral ocean color channels. GOCI have a capability for observation on the coastal environment change, GOCI perform the observation with 8 times a day. In this paper, we presented the more improved results for observation on the coastal environment change than MODIS ocean color sensor and detected the spatial difference of CDOM for monitoring coastal environment change.

  • This study presents the optimal conditions of zero-valent iron (ZVI) pretreatment for color removal from real dye wastewater. Removal of color by ZVI was strongly subject to the acidity of the wastewater buffering the pH increased after ZVI reduction. The real dye wastewater did not contain a sufficient amount of acidity and thus it was necessary to supplement acid to the dye wastewater before treatment. In continuous operation of iron column, the empty bed contact time (EBCT) and initial pH were varied to find the optimal conditions. A non-linear regression model fitted well the experimental result predicting that the optimal EBCT and pH for 80% removal efficiency was present in the range of 57~90 and 5~5.9, respectively. Color of column effluents could be further removed in the following biological oxidation step and the biodegradability of wastewater was also enhanced after iron pretreatment.

  • One of future remote sensing techniques for transportation application is vehicle detection from the space, which could be the basis of measuring traffic volume and recognizing traffic condition in the future. This paper introduces an approach to vehicle detection using image object segmentation approach. The object-oriented image processing is particularly beneficial to high-resolution image classification of urban area, which suffers from noisy components in general. The project site was Dae-Jeon metropolitan area and a set of true color aerial images at 10cm resolution was used for the test. Authors investigated a variety of parameters such as scale, color, and shape and produced a customized solution for vehicle detection, which is based on a knowledge-based hierarchical model in the environment of eCognition. The highest tumbling block of the vehicle detection in the given data sets was to discriminate vehicles in dark color from new black asphalt pavement. Except for the cases, the overall accuracy was over 90%.

  • Effects of thermal aging on color variations of various papers were evaluated. With thermal aging, most of papers showed a special trend in $a^*$-$b^*$ plane: $a^*$ (red-green) values of the samples were reduced at beginning and after a turning point it was increased while $b^*$ (blue-yellow) was kept increased (yellowing of paper). In case of filter paper which consists of chemical pulps, the changes in $a^*$ value was occurred late compared with other samples. In case of the copy paper with optical brightening agent, the turning point in $a^*$ was not observed while a constant increase in $b^*$ was observed. In case of color paper, no specific trends in $a^*$-$b^*$ were found.

  • Water management treatment of coastal region has been an important problem in Jeju city since the distributions of pipeline of the pumping system made a bad view in coastal region. To solve the problem, we observed the pipelines that are on the surface around the coastal region from Tapdong to Doduhang. From the observations, we found that Todong and Dodu areas were not unsightliness because the all pipelines were located in underground. However, the other areas, such area Yongdam, Handugi, Yongdam fishing village, had a serious problem for the coastal landscape view. To solve the problem, at we estimated coastal land color characteristics of Jeju city based on the observation of the pipelines. The estimated color panel shows that the green, blue and grey colors are a dominant factors of the Jeju coastal region. Based on the color panel, we proposed two methods, that is, one is a short time treatment, the other is a long time one. The short is based on the colour treatment, which is pipeline colour changing into surround natural one. The long time is the construction plan design method. Although the later method was very useful in Jeju island. However, it takes a lot of time and money. Therefore, in the situation, the short time is the better than the long time one.

  • To treat chromaticity contained in effluents of dyeing wastewater efficiently, potent dye-degrading microorganisms were isolated from influent water, aeration- tank sludge, recycle water and settling-tank sludge located in leather and dyeing treatment plant. Six potent strains were finally isolated and identified as Comamonas testosteroni, Methylobacteriaceae bacterium, Stenotrophomonas sp., Kluyveromyces fragilis, Ascomycetes sp. and Basidiomycetes sp. When Basidiomycetes sp. was inoculated into ME medium containing basal mixed-dyes, 93% of color was removed after 8 days incubation. In the same experiment, the 1:1 mixed culture of Basidiomycetes sp. and photosynthetic bacterium exhibited 88% of color removal; however, it showed better color removal for single-color dyes. The aeration-tank and settling-tank samples revealed higher color removal (95-96%) for black dyes. The settling-tank sample also revealed higher color removal on basal mixed-dyes, which resulted in 90% color removal after 6-h incubation. From the above results, it is expected to achieve a higher color removal using the mixed microorganisms that were isolated from aeration-tank and settling-tank samples.

  • Heat treatment of wood is an attractive alternative environmentally-friendly treatment to add value of less valuable woods by improving color, dimensional stability, and natural durability. To improve the color properties of Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis) and royal paulownia (Pauwlonia tomentosa), we treated the woods at $160^{\circ}C$, $180^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, and $220^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Color change after heat treatment was evaluated using the CIE-Lab color system and survey was conducted to determine the consumer preferences towards color of heat-treated wood. Lightness ($L^*$) decreased with increasing temperature and the higher degree of change was obtained in royal paulownia. The red/green chromaticity ($a^*$) in both wood decreased after heat treatment at $160^{\circ}C$, and constantly increased after heat treatment at $180^{\circ}C$ to $220^{\circ}C$. Yellow/blue chromaticity ($b^*$) in Korean white pine tended to increase after heat treatment at $160^{\circ}C$, then decreased gradually afterwards. In royal paulownia, $b^*$ values linearly increased with increasing temperature. Overall color change (${\Delta}E^*$) increased with increasing temperature with higher degree obtained in royal paulownia. Samples with the clamps in both wood species showed lower degree of the change in $L^*$, $a^*$, b and ${\Delta}E^*$. The results of the consumer preferences test showed that the darker colors of heat-treated woods were more preferred by consumers compared to the lighter colors of untreated woods. Consequently, heat treatment could enhance the color properties of Korean white pine and royal paulownia woods for value added products.
