The Korea Coast Guard(KCG) is the only comprehensive maritime administrative agency in Korea that performs various tasks taking place in the ocean, including rescue operations, disaster management, policing, Drug and smuggling crackdown, responding to Response to invasion of maritime territory, environmental conservation, and maritime security. It is vital to inform the public of the role and mission of KCG as the only comprehensive maritime administrative agency in Korea. However, most citizens, excluding residents of the coastal and island areas, have little knowledge of the security administration services of the KCG due to lack of exposure. This study reviewed the KCG's public relations(PR) organization and current status using KCG promotional materials, diagnosed the actual conditions of KCG's PR, and suggested ways to improve public relations activities through a questionnaire survey of public relations personnel. Through literature research and questionnaire survey, the KCG's public relations status was estimated and the measures to enhance publicity was derived as follows: strengthening the PR organization by reinforcing the personnel in charge of PR, improving customized promotion by clarifying the promotion strategy according to the promotion target, enhancing job training for PR personnel, and increasing the interest and support of commanders and internal members in charge of PR work.

The importance of disaster management and response is emerging as various disasters such as COVID-19, torrential rains, and fires occur one after another. In addition, in order to respond efficiently throughout disaster response activities, it is necessary to quickly collect disaster site information and quickly check the site situation through photo and video information so that rapid disaster response can be achieved. In this study, essential information required for decision-making was derived by analyzing the essential activities of each disaster response stage, analyzing the crisis management standard manual and related laws for each disaster type, and daily comprehensive report. In addition, a list of information necessary to grasp the situation of the disaster site and grasp the status of real-time damage was derived to establish guidelines for collecting volatile disaster site information, and disaster situation information can be efficiently displayed through a spatial information-based display system. By presenting essential disaster management information to be collected first, the person in charge of collecting information can efficiently collect information, and the situation room in charge of disaster response decision-making is expected to enable more efficient disaster situation management by receiving only the necessary information.
To raise awareness of carbon reduction in climate change, the Korea Forest Service has developed and adopted a forest carbon offset program, which aims to reduce carbon levels based on forest management. However, to maintain the forest carbon offset program, challenges such as the lack of a forest monitoring system to manage and maintain the program, must be faced. In this context, we investigated the limitations of conducting forest carbon offset programs using a number of interview techniques, including in-depth interview and questionnaire survey methods. The questionnaire surveys were developed based on the results of a literature review along with a preinterview and in-depth survey of the people in charge of the forest carbon offset program. The Irving Seidman technique was adopted for the in-depth interviews. Additionally, descriptive and frequency analyses were conducted to identify the characteristics of perception. Lastly, logistic regression was used to identify the limiting factors that affect the willingness to perform forest carbon offset monitoring activity. Results showed that the project managers or people in charge of the forest carbon offset program lacked expertise in forest carbon offset programs, which negatively affected their willingness to perform monitoring activity. Additionally, the study revealed a number of limiting factors that hindered the monitoring of forest carbon offset projects. Improving understanding using the approaches presented in this study may contribute to increasing the benefits associated with the forest carbon offset program in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Since bottom ash (BA) contains considerable amounts of CaO and MgO, it could be a useful amendment to increase soil pH and to immobilize cadmium (Cd). This study was conducted to evaluate effect of BA application in reducing Cd phytoavailability.METHODS AND RESULTS: Bottom ash was applied at the rate of 0, 20, 40, and 80 Mg/ha to Cd contaminated soil, and then lettuce was cultivated under field condition. soil pH and net negative charge increased slightly with increasing BA application; however, there was no statistical difference among the rates. Water soluble, exchangeable+acidic, reducible, and oxidizable fraction of Cd decreased with increasing bottom ash application rate, whereas residual fraction of Cd increased with increasing bottom ash application rate. Lettuce yield increased with rate of bottom ash up to 40 kg/ha. Visual evidences of cadmium toxicity and growth inhibition were not found during lettuce cultivation.CONCLUSION: Bottom ash was effective to reduce phytoextractability of Cd and to increase lettuce yield. Conclusively, BA could be a good soil amendment to reduce Cd phytoavailability in contaminated arable soil.
Iron (hydro)oxides in aqueous environments are primarily formed due to mining activities, and they are known to be typical colloidal particles disturbing surrounding environments. Among them, hematites are widespread in surface environments, and their behavior is controlled by diverse factors in aqueous environments. This study was conducted to elucidate the effect of environmental factors, such as ionic composition and strength, pH, and natural organic matter (NOM) on the behavior of colloidal hematite particles. In particular, two analytical methods, such as dynamic light scattering (DLS) and single-particle ICP-MS (spICP-MS), were compared to quantify and characterize the behavior of colloidal hematites. According to the variation of ionic composition and strength, the aggregation/dispersion characteristics of the hematite particles were affected as a result of the change in the thickness of the diffuse double layer as well as the total force of electrostatic repulsion and van der Walls attraction. Besides, the more dispersed the particles were, the farther away the aqueous pH was from their point of zero charge (PZC). The results indicate that the electrostatic and steric (structural) stabilization of the particles was enhanced by the functional groups of the natural organic matter, such as carboxyl and phenolic, as the NOM coated the surface of colloidal hematite particles in aqueous environments. Furthermore, such coating effects seemed to increase with decreasing molar mass of NOM. On the contrary, these stabilization (dispersion) effects of NOM were much more diminished by divalent cations such as Ca2+ than monovalent ones (Na+), and it could be attributed to the fact that the former acted as bridges much more strongly between the NOM-coated hematite particles than the latter because of the relatively larger ionic potential of the former. Consequently, it was quantitatively confirmed that the behavior of colloidal hematites in aqueous environments was significantly affected by diverse factors, such as ionic composition and strength, pH, and NOM. Among them, the NOM seemed to be the primary and dominant one controlling the behavior of hematite colloids. Meanwhile, the results of the comparative study on DLS and spICPMS suggest that the analyses combining both methods are likely to improve the effectiveness on the quantitative characterization of colloidal behavior in aqueous environments because they showed different strengths: the main advantage of the DLS method is the speed and ease of the operation, while the outstanding merit of the spICP-MS are to consider the shape of particles and the type of aggregation.
In this study, an adsorbent prepared by natural drying of iron hydroxide-based sludge collected from settling basin at a mine drainage treatment facility located in Gangneung, Gangwon-do was used to remove fluoride in an artificial fluoride solution and mine drainage, and the adsorption characteristics of the adsorbent were investigated. As a result of analyzing the chemical composition, mineralogical properties, and specific surface area of the adsorbent used in the experiment, iron oxide (Fe2O3) occupies 79.2 wt.% as the main constituent, and a peak related to calcite (CaCO3) in the crystal structure analysis was analyzed. It was also identified that an irregular surface and a specific surface area of 216.78 m2·g-1. In the indoor batch-type experiment, the effect of changes in reaction time, pH, initial fluoride concentration and temperature on the change in adsorption amount was analyzed. The adsorption of fluoride showed an adsorption amount of 3.85 mg·g-1 16 hours after the start of the reaction, and the increase rate of the adsorption amount gradually decreased. Also, as the pH increased, the amount of fluoride adsorption decreased, and in particular, the amount of fluoride adsorption decreased rapidly around pH 5.5, the point of zero charge at which the surface charge of the adsorbent changes. Meanwhile, the results of the isotherm adsorption experiment were applied to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm adsorption models to infer the fluoride adsorption mechanism of the used adsorbent. To understand the thermodynamic properties of the adsorbent using the Van't Hoff equation, thermodynamic constants 𝚫H° and 𝚫G° were calculated using the adsorption amount information obtained by increasing the temperature from 25℃ to 65℃ to determine the adsorption characteristics of the adsorbent. Finally, the adsorbent was applied to the mine drainage having a fluoride concentration of about 12.8 mg·L-1, and the fluoride removal rate was about 50%.

In terms of quality of life, leisure and health have become important issues with increasing incomes and decreasing working hours in Korea. This study empirically investigates the effects of urban open space on outdoor leisure activities, emphasizing that parks, river banks, and physical activity sites can provide opportunities such as walking, jogging, stretching, and cycling, free of charge to all residents. Based on 2010 sample survey data on leisure activities, multiple regression model as well as hierarchical linear model are estimated, taking account of both individual characteristics on demand and environmental/areal factors on supply side, including open space. Major findings include: first, urban open space significantly increases residents' outdoor leisure activities, second, the effect is more significant for the elderly and third, the effect is more valid for those with relatively low incomes and less education. These results imply that urban open space could be available as a local public good to cope with population aging and to realize health city and social welfare, since this space is not only a leisure place but also public health and welfare facilities.
This paper aims to analyze the satisfaction level of people for the different types of tree burial sites, in order to suggest directions for the policy to revitalize tree burials. For the purpose of this study, the tree burial sites were classified into four types, and we conducted a questionnaire, targeting 414 visitors to the different case sites. Through the comparative analysis among the case sites, this study found that people prefer the public tree burial sites to the private ones, and most people liked the type of tree burials best created in a natural forest among the public sites. Based on these results, this study suggested that the policy should be focused on the revitalization of public tree burial sites created especially in natural forests in order to satisfy the preference of people. Through the analysis of the questions regarding the general citizens' awareness of tree burials, this study found the improvement measures are required for convenience facilities, low satisfaction for usage charge, low credibility for private tree burial sites, and strong demands to create stable growth environment for memorial trees. On the other hand, this study confound the bright prospect for the spread of tree burials because people who have used tree burial sites were highly willingness to recommend tree burial sites to others and they wanted to do a tree burial for their own funerals.

The West Sea Fisheries Research Institute of National Fisheries Research and Development Institute which is in charge of research on marine environment, fisheries resources and aquaculture carries out various monitoring projects with an aim of marine ecosystem conservation. The monitoring projects include costal oceanographic observation, serial oceanographic observation, fishing ground monitoring, national marine environmental monitoring, harmful algal bloom monitoring, Korea-China joint monitoring on the Yellow Sea and jellyfish monitoring. The monitoring produces basic data on fishing ground locations of main fishery species to improve fishery productivity. The data are also used to estimate variations in fisheries resources caused by climate change and to set up the policy for creating economic value from fishery, marine environmental conservation and marine leisure activities and conserving/controlling the marine environment for the sustainable production in the fishing ground.

This study was performed to solve the problem of the 2nd contamination and excessive treatment cost by determining proper quantity of hydrogen peroxide, iron catalyst, mixing method, and input mode that should be provided when Fenton oxidation (this is mostly applied to small contaminated areas such as service station sites) is applied to the excavated and diesel-contaminated soil. Soil artificially contaminated with 10000mg/kg of diesel was used for the experiment. In the batch test, diesel removal seemed to increase as the concentration of hydrogen peroxide increases. When iron catalyst was added, removal efficiency of diesel was much higher than the time when hydrogen peroxide was added solely. The removal efficiency showed greater when Fe(III) was added compared to Fe(II). Column experiment was executed on the basis of results of the batch test to investigate adequate reagent mixing and input methods. The highest efficiency was acquired in the case of separate input mode. Also, it was found that when inputting Fe(III) iron catalyst and separately inputting hydrogen peroxide after dividing the bundle in the column, removal efficiency was 92.8%, which was 9 times greater than that of the first method, 10.5%, when only hydrogen peroxide was added. Thus, it is expected that if the result of this research is applied to Fenton oxidation for the remediation of soil contaminated by diesel, the problem of the 2nd contamination and excessive treatment charge caused by excessive addition of hydrogen peroxide and iron catalyst could be solved.
