  • The real-time modeling system, named AirWatch System, has been developed to evaluate the environmental impact from a large source. It consists of stack TMS (TeleMetering System) that measures the emission data from the source, AWS (Automatic Weather Station) that monitors the weather data and computer system with the dispersion modeling software. The modeling theories used in the system are Gaussian plume and puff models. The Gaussian plume model is used for the dispersion in the simple terrain with a point meteorological data while the puff model is for the dispersion in complex terrain with three dimensional wind fields. The AirWatch System predicts the impact of the emitted pollutants from the large source on the near-by environment on the real -time base and the alarm is issued to control the emission rate if the calculated concentrations exceed the modeling significance level.

  • Information systems development entails planning, analysis, design and construction phases. The analysis phase identifying user requirements is the most important of these phases. Since unidentified defects in the early phase causes increased work and costs as development proceeds, the quality of analysis results affects the quality of the resultant system. Major tasks in the analysis phase are data modeling and process modeling. Research on building a knowledge-based system for data modeling have been conducted much, however, not sufficiently for process modeling. As a system environment with high user interaction increases, research on process modeling methods and knowledge- based systems considering such environment are required. In this research, a process modeling framework for information systems with high user interaction is suggested and a knowledge-based system for supporting the suggested framework is implemented. A proposed model consists of the following tasks: event analysis, process analysis, and event/process interaction analysis. Event analysis identifies business events and their responses. Process analysis break down the processes of an enterprise into progressively increasing details. Decomposition begins at the function level and ends when the elementary process level is reached. Event/process interaction analysis verifies the results of process analysis and event analysis. A knowledge-based system for supporting a proposed process modeling framework is implemented in a web-based environment.

  • The VR (virtual reality) simulator such as helicopter simulation needs virtual environment of existing urban area. But the real urban environment keeps changing. We need a modeling method to make use of the GIS data that are updated periodically. The flight simulation needs to visualize not only buildings in near distance but also a large number of buildings in the far distance. We propose a method for modeling urban environment from aerial image and digital map with a comparatively small manual work. Image based modeling is applied to urban model which considers the characteristic of Korean cities. Buildings in the distance can be presented without creating a lot of polygons. Proposed method consists of the pre-processing stage which prepares the model from the GIS data and the modeling stage which makes the virtual urban environment. The virtual urban environment can be modeled with the simple process which utilizes the height map of buildings.

  • A strategic plan for an immediate situation must be present in a business enterprise to deal actively and efficiently with the demand environment of new customer. The purpose of this paper is to provide research about the manufacturing strategy situations of the Korean manufacturing company. And this paper is a part of Modeling on Manufacturing Strategy. We emphasizes the importance of dynamism and complexity on the competitive environment, and classify the manufacturing strategy by trade-off model, cumulative model, sandcone model, strategic fit model, and competitiveness model.

  • An autonomous reconnaissance ground robot performs its duty in various different environments such as mountain-scape, desert and under-water through changing its shape and form according to the environment it is working in. Making a prototype robot for each environment requires extra cost and time. It is also difficult to modify the problem after production. In this paper, we propose the adoption of M&S(Modeling & Simulation) environment for the production and design of the autonomous reconnaissance ground robot. The proposed method on the M&S environment contributed to the more effective and less time consuming production of the robot through the Pre-Modeling and Pre-Simulation process. For example, we showed the design and implementation of the autonomous reconnaissance ground robot under the proposed environment and tools.

  • Sulfur dioxide distributions in the Seoul area in 1988 were reproduced by using ISCLT which was the most versatile model among the preferred models recommended by USEPA. Modeling was performed season by season in order to take into account distinct four seasons in Korea. Predicted concentrations were close to the observed ones in most regions, but were different from the observed ones in such regions where the effect of sources outside the Seoul area was important. For better results of the modeling, the modeling domain should be chosen after a careful examination of principal wind directions.

  • This paper presents a method of topological modeling using only low-cost sonar sensors. The proposed method constructs a topological model by extracting sub-regions from the local grid map. The extracted sub-regions are considered as nodes in the topological model, and the corresponding edges are generated according to the connectivity between two sub-regions. A grid confidence for each occupied grid is evaluated to obtain reliable regions in the local grid map by filtering out noisy data. Moreover, a convexity measure is used to extract sub-regions automatically. Through these processes, the topological model is constructed without predefining the number of sub-regions in advance and the proposed method guarantees the convexity of extracted sub-regions. Unlike previous topological modeling methods which are appropriate to the corridor-like environment, the proposed method can give a reliable topological modeling in a home environment even under the noisy sonar data. The performance of the proposed method is verified by experimental results in a real home environment.

  • An object-oriented simulation modeling environment, AgvTalk, is presented to provide flexible modeling capabilities for simulation of many alternative AGV systems. The hierarchical features and modularity of AgvTalk create possibilities for the extension and reuse of simulation object components. Also, detailed behavior of each object in the AGV system can be modeled easily and exactly in AgvTalk because there are no limiting modeling constructs. The modeling capabilities of AgvTalk is demonstrated by designing and simulating a conceptually different configuration of AGV systems, known as, the tandem configuration. Between the tandem and conventional AGV systems, the characteristics and design methodology in AgvTalk are described. Also, simulations between two systems are compared with AgvTalk in the job shop environment.

  • This paper introduces segmentation based environment modeling method and integration method using multiple environment map for constructing the realtime image-based panoramic navigation system. The segmentation-based environment modeling method is easy to implement on the environment map and can be used for environment modeling by extracting the depth value by the segmentation of the environment map. However, an environment model that is constructed using a single environment map has the problem of a blurring effect caused by the fixed resolution, and the stretching effect of the 3D model caused when information that does not exist on the environment map occurs due to the occlusion. In this paper, we suggest environment models integration method using multiple environment map to resolve the above problem. This method can express parallax effect and expand the environment model to express wide range of environment. The segmentation-based environment modeling method using multiple environment map can build a detail model with optimal resolution.

  • The sophistication of current software applications results in the increasing cost fur software development time. The component-based software development framework is proposed to overcome the difficulty and time-consuming requirements by modularity and reusability. As is the general software case, a component-based simulation framework encourages the reusability of the real system model based on the modularity of the applied simulation methodology. This paper presents a component-based simulation environment that is based on the DEVS/COM run-time infrastructure. The DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification) formalism provides a formal modeling and simulation framework for the generic dynamic systems [1] and Microsoft's COM (Component Object Model) is one of the strongest competitor fur the component standard. The reusability by the DEVS/COM simulation environment saves model development time remarkably and component technology make simulator itself to be a subparts of real application.
