  • Background : Allergic rhinitis is the most frequently occuring immunological disorder. It affects men, women and children and represents significant cost in terms of suffering and loss of productivity. Objective & Methods : We referred to the information through Entrex Pubmed from 2004 to 2007 January about alternative medicine for allergic rhinitis, 9 treatises. Results : About 9 treatises, 2 treatises were for the acupuncture treatment, I treatise was for the acupuncture and chinese herbal medicine, 2 treatises were for the single substance(butterbur, soy sauce ingredients), 1 treatise was for the homeopathic preparation, 1 treatise was for the ayur-veda herbal treatment, 1 treatise was for the ultraviolet light phototherapy, 1 treatise was for the systematic review of alternative medicine. Except 2 treatises for the acupuncture treatment, 6 treatises used the double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled methods. As a result, we found 5 treatises that treat group had more improvement than control group, 3 treatises that treat group had no difference control group on effect significantly. 1 review article exhibited the most of alternative medical literatures were inadequate methodologically and therapeutic efficacy alternative treatment for allergic rhinitis was not supported by currently available evidence. Conclusion : We found that treatises about the alternative medicine for allergic rhinitis were more and more published. We were supposed that many internal treatises were published adequately by methodology to prove Korean medical treatment effects for allergic rhinitis.

  • Objectives : To review the history, the theoretical basis and the technique of Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS), papers and books on IMS were searched. Methods : 15 papers were searched with the keyword 'Gunn CC' at Pubmed(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=pubmed). Several full texts of them and other papers were found at the internet homepage of The Institute for the Study and Treatment of Pain (http://www.istop.org/). 16 Korean papers on IMS were searched at KoreaMed(http://www.koreamed.org/SearchBasic.php) and Koreanstudies Infomation Service System(http://kiss.kstudy.com/KsiKiss.asp). Results : Dr. Gunn has made unique model which can explain the pathology of chronic pain and the mechanism of acupuncture treatment. In this model, he postulated that most of chronic pain is radiculopathy due to spondylosis and acupuncture treatment to the hyperalgesic muscle can restore the normal function of involved muscles and nerves. Conclusions : IMS is an acupuncture technique in which the muscles under the Ah-shi or tender points in periphery and intrasegmental paravertebral muscles are stimulated with needles.

  • There is much confusion in the field of atopic dermatitis (AD) regarding how to best measuredisease severity objectively. Therefore, we aimed to establish a new adequate scoring system for AD, that should be based on comparisonand analysis of various scoring systems. We report as follows. Methods: We searched for data relating to severity scoring systems for atopic dermatitis in Entrez PubMed From 1990 to 2001 Results and Conclusions: 1. Properties of severity scoring systems were validity, reliability, sensitivity of change and ease of use. 2. The essential items of severity scoring systems were extent. intensity and subjective symptoms. 3. The surface extent of the lesion was evaluated by the percentage of involvement of each of 10 areas. 4. The criteria of severity were divided into intensity and subjective symptoms. Intensity items are erythema, papulation, lichenification, oozing, dryness, excoriations, and pigmentation. The subjective symptom is pruritus, evaluated according to sleep loss. 5. The significant items of severity scoring system were symptomsrather than areas. As it were, we assumed extent accounted for around 30% of each total score, with intensity and subjective symptoms representing 70%.

  • Many important terminologies in biomedical text are expressed as abbreviations or acronyms. We newly suggest a semantic link topic model based on the concepts of topic and dependency link to disambiguate biomedical abbreviations and cluster long form variants of abbreviations which refer to the same senses. This model is a generative model inspired by the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic model, in which each document is viewed as a mixture of topics, with each topic characterized by a distribution over words. Thus, words of a document are generated from a hidden topic structure of a document and the topic structure is inferred from observable word sequences of document collections. In this study, we allow two distinct word generation to incorporate semantic dependencies between words, particularly between expansions (long forms) of abbreviations and their sentential co-occurring words. Besides topic information, the semantic dependency between words is defined as a link and a new random parameter for the link presence is assigned to each word. As a result, the most probable expansions with respect to abbreviations of a given abstract are decided by word-topic distribution, document-topic distribution, and word-link distribution estimated from document collection though the semantic dependency link topic model. The abstracts retrieved from the MEDLINE Entrez interface by the query relating 22 abbreviations and their 186 expansions were used as a data set. The link topic model correctly predicted expansions of abbreviations with the accuracy of 98.30%.

  • Purpose: Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs or pockets within or on the surface of an ovary. Most cysts present little or no discomfort and are noncancerous and harmless. So non-surgical treatments with herbal medicine or acupuncture and moxa therapy are important and suitable in this pathology. But there are few RCT articles about ovarian cyst in Korean Medicine(KM) clinical and research field. Methods: To review treatment method and other research tendency about ovarian cyst in journals related with KM and Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) through web-searching. Searching was done through web site #http://omis.ksucc.ac.kr# and pub-med(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez) with key words #ovarian cyst#, #TCM#, #herb#, #CAM#, and #acupuncture#. Results: Seven articles were searched in journals related with KM, then six of them were simple case report and the other one was about diagnosis for ovarian cyst and another gynecologic disease such as uterine myoma and infertility through the iris diagnosis. And two articles were searched in journals related with TCM, then one of them was simple case report but the other is RCT article. Conclusion: KM and TCM therapies have some beneficial effect to resolve cyst, but objective power as a evidence is weak in the viewpoint of EBM. So continuous clinical trials such as RCT and multi center trials are needed.

  • In order to integrate heterogeneous biological information sources, it is necessary to define the view that represents unified viewpoint for the multiple sources by hiding heterogeneity of the data. We present an XML-based view definition model and show Its operating principles in designing the middleware system to integrate biological information sources. This model supports the user-defined XML view to increase flexibility in constructing the integration system and execute integrated queries on higher level ion. Based on the view-definition model, we present a wrapping model for relational database systems and web resources as well as an application program.

  • Background and Objective : The facial nerve grading system proposed by House and Brackmann is most widely accepted for the clinical assessment of facial nerve injury. Because of the limitations and subjectivity of the House-Brackmann scale, several new scales of varying degrees of objectivity and ease of use have been introduced. To assess methods of evaluating the function of the facial nerve that have been introduced over the past 20 years, We compared with the House-Brackmann scale. Method : We referred to the information through Entrez Pubmed and Korean studies information(KSI) from 1985 to 2006 about methods of evaluating facial nerve function. We choose 7 scales that focused on objective and easy of use. Result and conclusion : Sunnybrook scale is a weighted, subjective scale with incorporation of secondary defects into a single composite score. Sunnybrook scale can be recommended over House-Brackmann scale.

  • A recent report of the Korean Intellectual Property Office(KIPO) showed that the number of biological sequence-based patents is rapidly increasing in Korea. We present biological features of Korean patented sequences though bioinformatic analysis. The analysis is divided into two steps. The first is an annotation step in which the patented sequences were annotated with the Reference Sequence (RefSeq) database. The second is an association step in which the patented sequences were linked to genes, diseases, pathway, and biological functions. We used Entrez Gene, Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), and Gene Ontology (GO) databases. Through the association analysis, we found that nearly 2.6% of human genes were associated with Korean patenting, compared to 20% of human genes in the U.S. patent. The association between the biological functions and the patented sequences indicated that genes whose products act as hormones on defense responses in the extra-cellular environments were the most highly targeted for patenting. The analysis data are available at http://www.patome.net

  • Objective : As prevalence of atopic dermatitis(AD) rises and medicine of atopic dematitis develops, the methods of measurement for atopic dermatitis have developed. Therefore, we aimed to establish a new sconring system in oriental medicine for a childhood atopic dematitis, by comparison, analysis of various sconing systems. Method : We searched for the data related to severity sconing systems of atopic dermatitis in Entrez PubMed on abroad thesis and KISS(Korenstdued Information Service System) on domestic thesis from 1990 to 2005. Result : Severity sconing systems for atopic dermatitis satisfy validity, reliability, sensitivity of change and verification of this. The essential items of severity sconing systems are extent, intensity and subjective symptoms. The lesion is divided into 9 areas(head and neck, upper limbs, elbow, hands, trunk, hip and inguinal, lower limbs, knee, feet). The items of intensity are erythema, oedema and induration and papulation, oozing and weeping and erosion, excorition, scaling, lichenification. The subjective symptom is pruritis, evaluated according to sleep loss and obstruction of play and study. The extent and intensity is evaluated in combination. We suggested that extent and intensity occupied for 70% and subject symptoms accounted for 30% of total score.
