  • Enthalpy probe with the inner and outer diameters of 1.5 mm and 4.8 mm, respectively, is designed and used to measure the temperatures and velocities along the centerline of Ar arc plasma flow until the probe was destroyed. For this purpose, Ar arc plasma flow is generated by non-transferred type DC arc heater with the power level of 17 kW. From this experiment, it is shown that the designed enthalpy probe can measure the temperature and velocity of arc plasma flow up to 12,000 K and 600 m/s, respectively, without destroy of probe tip. In this extreme case, the arc plasma flow is calculated to transfer the heat flux of ${\sim}5{\times}10^7\;W/m^2$ to the probe based on the heat and thermal boundary equations near the forward stagnation point of a body immersed in arc plasma flow. Consequently, the designed enthalpy probe can measure the wide ranges of plasma temperatures, velocities and concentrations simultaneously, which are generated by various types of arc heaters within the heat flux ranges of $0{\sim}5{\times}10^7\;W/m^2$ on the probe tip.

  • Experimental analyses on a supersonic plasma wind tunnel of CBNU (Chonbuk National University) were carried out. In these experiments, a segmented arc heater was employed as a plasma source and operated at the gas flow rates of 16.3 g/s and the total currents of 300 A. The input power reached ~350 kW with the torch efficiency of 51.4 %, which is defined as the ratio of total exit enthalpy to the input power. The pressure of plasma gas in the arc heater was measured up to 4 bar while it was down to ~45 mbar in a vacuum chamber through a Laval nozzle. During this conversion process, the generated supersonic plasma was expected to have a total enthalpy of ~11 MJ/kg from the measured input power and torch efficiency. In addition to the measurement of total enthalpy, a cone type probe was inserted into the supersonic plasma flow in order to estimate the angle between shock layer and surface of the probe. From these measurements, the temperature and the Mach number of the supersonic plasma were predicted as ~2,950 K and ~3.7, respectively.

  • 4-probe resistivity measurement technique was used to study kinetics of hydrogen absorption on Pd film ($180{\AA}$ thick) in the ${\alpha}$ phase. Hydrogen gas was introduced to the activated Pd film. For very low hydrogen concentration the following rate law is valid in ${\alpha}$ phase very thin Pd film $$v=k\frac{1}{1+KX{_H}}PH{_2}-k^{\prime}\frac{KX{_H}{^2}}{1+KX{_H}}$$ which is similar to that of bulk. The activation energy of the forward reaction is 4.6kcal/mol H and of the backward reaction 8.4kcal/mol H, which yields the reaction enthalpy -3.8kcal/mol H in the temperature range between 25 and $40^{\circ}C$. The values of activation and enthalpy of thin film are rather smaller than that of bulk sample. This may be due to surface area difference between bulk and film.

  • The objective of this research was executed to investigate the effect of molar ratio of formaldehyde to urea and melamine (F/(U+M)) of urea-melamine-formaldehyde (UMF) resin on bonding high and low moisture content veneers. For that purpose, UMF resin types with 5 different F/(U+M) molar ratios (1.45, 1.65, 1.85, 2.05, and 2.25) synthesized were used in present study. First, their curing behavior was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry. Second, their adhesion performance in bonding high and low moisture content veneers was evaluated by probe tack and dry and wet shear strength tests. Curing temperature and reaction enthalpy decreased with the increase of F/(U+M) molar ratio. And the dry and wet shear strengthsof plywood manufactured from low moisture content veneers were higher than thoseof plywood manufactured from high moisture content veneers. Also, the maximum initial tack force on the low moisture content veneer was higher than that on the high moisture content veneer.

  • High-power pulsed laser ablation under atmospheric pressure is studied utilizing numerical and experimental methods with emphasis on recondensation ratio, and the dynamics of the laser induced vapor flow. In the numerical calculation, the temperature pressure, density and vaporization flux on a solid substrate are first obtained by a heat-transfer computation code based on the enthalpy method, and then the plume dynamics is calculated by using a commercial CFD package. To confirm the computation results, the probe beam deflection technique was utilized for measuring the propagation of a laser induced shock wave. Discontinuities of properties and velocity over the Knudsen layer were investigated. Related with the analysis of the jump condition, the effect of the recondesation ratio on the plume dynamics was examined by comparing the pressure, density, and mass fraction of ablated aluminum vapor. To consider the effect of mass transfer between the ablation plume and air, unlike the most previous investigations, the equation of species conservation is simultaneously solved with the Euler equations. Therefore the numerical model computes not only the propagation of the shock front but also the distribution of the aluminum vapor. To our knowledge, this is the first work that employed a commercial CFD code in the calculation of pulsed ablation phenomena.

  • The critical micelle concentration(CMC) of CTAB was determined with changes in absorbance at 202nm band of 4-biphenyl acetate($BPA^-$). With $BPA^-$ as a probe, the effect of temperature on CMC of CTAB has been observed between $30^{\circ}C{\sim}70^{\circ}C$. In this range of temperature the values of CMC are $1.18{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}2.02{\times}10^{-4}M$. The free energy(${\Delta}G^{\circ}m$) and enthalpy(${\Delta}H^{\circ}m$)for the micellization of CTAB was negative and the entropy(${\Delta}S^{\circ}m$) was a large positive value. The micellization of CTAB is considered as a spontaneous process and to involve a phase transition. The orientational binding of 4-biphenyl acetate anion to the CTAB micelle interface has been studied with $300MHz\;H^1-NMR$ data. The change in chemical shift of proton in CTAB as well as those of the protons in $BPA^-$ have been investigated by increasing the mole fraction of the anion in the mixed solutions. The changes in chemical shift with increasing mole fraction of anion($BPA^-$) indicate the formation of mixed micelle between CTAB and $BPA^-$. The changes in chemical shifts of methylene protons in CTAB, demonstrate the penetration of $BPA^-$ into the palisade layer of the CTAB micelle.

  • L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$Mn $O_{3}$ powders were prepared by both GNP(Glycine-Nitrate Process) and solid state reaction method in various of calcination temperature(800-1000.deg. C) and time in air. Also, L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$Mn $O_{3}$ cathode contacts on YSZ(Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia) substrate were prepared by screen printing and sintering method as a function of sintering temperature(1100-1450.deg. C) in air. Sintering behaviors have been investigated by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and porosity measurement. Compositional and structural characterization were carried out by X-ray diffractometer and ICP AES(Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry) analysis. Electrical characterization was carried out by the electrical conductivity with linear 4 point probe method. As the calcination period increased in solid state reaction method, L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$Mn $O_{3}$ phase increased. Although L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$Mn $O_{3}$ single phase was obtained only for 48hrs at 1000.deg. C, in GNP method it was easy to get single and ultra-fine L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$Mn $O_{3}$ powders with submicron particle size at 650.deg. C for 30min. The particle size and thickness of L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$Mn $O_{3}$ cathode contact by solid state reaction method did not change during the heat treatment, while those by GNP method showed good sintering characteristics because initial powder size fabricated from GNP method is smaller than that fabricated from solid state reaction method. Based on enthalpy change from thermodynamic data and ICP-AES analysis, it was suggested to make cathode contact in composition of (L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$)$_{0.91}$ Mn $O_{3}$ which have little second phase (L $a_{2}$Z $r_{2}$ $O_{7}$) for high efficient solid oxide fuel cells applications. As (L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$)$_{0.91}$Mn $O_{3}$ cathode contact on YSZ substrate was sintering at 1250.deg. C the temperature that liquid phase sintering did not occur. It was possible to obtain proper cathode contacts with electrical conductivity of 150(S/cm) and porosity content of 30-40%.m) and porosity content of 30-40%.
