To understand the role of helical geometry on the regression rate enhancement, two competing underlying mechanisms such as turbulence enhancement and swirling motion production were studied by numerical calculations. Experimental results showed that the enhancement of heat transfer rate has the very close relation to the increase in regression rate even though the percentage of increase in heat transfer rate is different from that in regression rate. This discrepancy is presumably due to the change of turbulent flow feature caused by so-called "blowing mass flux" from the fuel surface. In this regard, the results of RANS calculation show that the blowing velocity is responsible for the reduction of the swirl generation and the increase in the turbulent kinetic energy. And the dominancy of one of the mechanisms causes the increase in the regression rate. Meanwhile, the increase in turbulent kinetic energy due to the mixing of blowing flow and free stream flow does not contribute for the enhancement of the heat transfer rate to the surface because the blowing flow pushes boundary layer away from the solid surface.
The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics of jet flow and heat transfer caused by trapezoid rods array in impinging jet system. In this study, trapezoid rods have been set up in front of flat plate to serve as a turbulence promoter. The bottom width of trapezoid rod was W=4, 8mm and oblique angle were $80^{\circ}$. The space from rods to the heating surface was C=1, 2, 4mm, the pitch between each rods was P=30, 40, 50mm, and the distance from nozzle exit to flat plate was H=100, 500mm. This results were compared with the case without trapezoid rods. As a result, when rods are installed in front of the impinging plate, the acceleration of the jet flow and the eddies due to the rods seem to contribute to the heat transfer enhancement. Among test conditions, the heat transfer performance was best for the condition of W=8mm, C=1mm, P=30mm and H/B=10. The maximum heat transfer rate is about 1.9 times larger than that without trapezoid rods.

Fouling and cleaning tests are performed for a uniquely designed 7,000 ㎉/hr fluidized bed heat exchanger for exhaust gas heat recovery. Fuel rich condition is maintained in the combustor for a limited time period to generate soot that is to be deposited on the heat transfer surfaces (fouling) and 600 Um glass beads are circulated inside the heat exchanger system for cleaning and enhancing the heat transfer performance. According to the present experimental study, performance degradation mode could be monitored and the effect of particle circulation on the heat transfer improvement could be identified. Through the present study, it is demonstrated that circulating particles contribute not only to the fouling reduction in gas side, but also to the heat transfer enhancement of the unit, while other possible aging factors including water side corrosion seemed to contribute to the accumulated performance deterioration.

Experimental results for forced convection condensation of Refrigerant-22 and ternary Refrigerant-407C(HFC-32/125/134a 23/25/52 wt%) which is being considered as a substitute R-22 inside a horizontal micro-fin tube are presented. The test section was horizontal double-tube counterflow condenser with a length 4,000 mm micro-fin tube, having 8.53 mm ID, 0.2 mm fin height and 60 fins. The range of parameters of mass velocity were varied from 102.1 to 301.0 kg/(m2.s) and inlet quality 1.0. At the given experimental conditions. the average heat transfer coefficients for R-407C were lower than that for R-22 at a micro-fin tube. Over the mass velocity range tested. the PF(penalty factor) for R-22, R-407C were lower than the increasing ratio of heat transfer area by fins, and the EF(enhancement factor) for R-22, R-407C were higher than the increasing ratio of heat transfer area by fins.

Experimental and computational studies were carried out to investigate the turbulent heat transfer enhancement of the cooling system in nuclear reactor by large scale vortex generation. The large scale vortex motion was generated by rearranging the inclination angels of mixing vanes to the coordinate direction. Axial development of mean and turbulent velocities in the subchannels were measured by the 2-color LDV system. Eddy diffusivity concept based on $\kappa{-}\varepsilon$ model was employed to calculate the turbulent heat and momentum transfers in the subchannel. The turbulences generated by split mixing vanes has small length scales so that they maintain only about $10D_H$ after the spacer grid. On the other hand, the turbulences generated by the large scale vortex motions continue longer and remain up to $25D_H$ after the spacer grid.
The solar air heater has various performances according to an obstacle installed in the air duct. Many studies on thermal performance have been conducted. But many of these studies were using a kind of rib type obstacle attached at the bottom of absorbing plate, but they are so hard to be manufactured. In this study, characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop in the solar air heater with various horizontal rectangular obstacles was investigated by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis. As a result, the heat transfer performance was improved from 1.2 to 3.32 times depending on installation conditions of rectangular obstacle. The pressure drop, however, also increased with increment of heat transfer performance from 2.8 to 180 times only by changing installation conditions of rectangular obstacle. Thus, the performance factor presenting the thermal performance enhancement on the same pressure drop was also confirmed. As a result, the highest value of 0.828 as better performance factor was obtained at the lower height of rectangular obstacle and this value has started to decrease with increment of heat transfer performance. In the end, it could be confirmed that the pressure drop was carried higher than the quantity of improvement of the heat transfer performance when the heat transfer performance was increased by change of installation conditions of rectangular obstacle. Both heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop to be required for system need to be considered before the rectangular obstacles are applied to the solar air heater.
An analysis is made of the fully developed laminar flow and heat transfer in a parallel flat plate with heated rectangular block arrays to investigated the influence of bouyancy force. The shrouds is considered as adiabatic, while the heated block surface transmit a uniform rate of heat flux per unit axial length. The governing equations for velocity and temperature are solved by SIMPLE(Semi-Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equation) algorithm. Detailed velocity and temperature fields and overall heat transfer on wide range of Rayleigh number and various aspect ratios of heated rectangular blocks are computed. The result show that bouyancy leads to a significient enhancement in heat transfer along with a smaller increase in pressure drop, with the great enhancement found when the aspect ratio is 3.0.

This study is intend to improve flow pattern within evaporator, which is low quality and low mass flux, by installing narrow horizontal annular crevice so that enhance heat transfer coefficient. The motive, which made to study heat transfer enhancement by using narrow annular crevice, came from capillary phenomena and pumping force of generating vapor on refrigerant boiling. Tests were run about 5 models of turbulence promoter with CFC-12, in the range of evaporating temperature (15.deg. C), mass flux (50 to 100 kg/m$\^$2/s), heat flux (3.4 to 6.7 kW/m$\^$2/), quality (0.1 to O.5). It is observed that flow pattern within evaporator is changed closely to semi-annular flow or annular flow, of which refrigerant liquid is reached to the upper side of tube by using narrow annular crevice. When the narrow annular crevice is installed in the evaporator tube, local heat transfer coefficient is generally more improved than that of smooth tube. That fact is according to observed result of flow pattern. It is learned that narrow annular crevice has more efficiency at a low mass flux. At the TP-5, enhancement of heat transfer rate is about 170% compare to that of smooth tube on a low mass flux (50 kg/m$\^$2/s), and it is about 134% on a high mass flux (100 kg/M$\^$2/S), so that we know that it is on a very high condition.

The present study was investigated the effect of the driving condition on the performance of a louver fin and tube type heat exchanger under frosting condition. Heat transfer rate and pressure drop by frost were experimentally investigated. Effects of the wet blub temperature and the shape of a fin on heat transfer performances has been also investigated. The key parameters were fin type(louver and corrugate fin) and the wet blub temperature of air (0.5, 1.0, $1.5^{\circ}C$). The heat transfer performance of the louver fin and tube type heat exchanger was higher by 0.89% than the corrugate fin type. As the wet blub temperature of air were increased, the heat transfer rate, pressure drop and mass of frost of three test models(Type A, B, C) were increased. Especially, the maximum heat transfer rate and maximum pressure drop were shown for the louver fin and tube type heat exchanger. As a experimental result, the enhancement factor(EF) of louver fin and tube type heat exchanger was $0.2{\sim}0.4$ due to the high pressure drop.

We evaluated heat transfer characteristics of microscale wrinkles using a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis. In order to verify the heat transfer effect of wrinkles having various shapes, we introduce wrinkling processes to generate few different shapes of wrinkles such as macroscale ($200{\sim}400{\mu}m$ width), microscale ($10{\sim}30{\mu}m$ width), and hierarchical (microscale on macroscale wrinkle) wrinkles, using repetitive-dividing-volume (RDV) method for single-shape of wrinkles and connected method of UV-weakly polymerization with thermal curing for hierarchical structure of winkles. The analysis results of simplified CFD model showed that heat flux on heated plate was changed by the shape of wrinkles on the plate. The increase in heat flux of about 2.6 times was achieved in the case where hierarchical wrinkle structure was used.
