  • This paper has dealt with the effect of non ionized surfactant and water mixture on drag reduction and heat transfer enhancement in a circular pipe flow with experimentally. The test section was consisted of stainless steel pipe with inside diameter of 16mm. The wire coil was used to increase heat transfer in a pipe and the on ionized surfactant(Oleyl Dihydroxyethyl Amino Oxide, ODEAO) was used to reduce the drag force of water mixture with surfactant. The main parameters of this experiment were diameter and pitch of wire coil and the ratio of test section length and horizontal wire coil length. In this experiment, the acquired results were 1) Drag reduction effect existed in this ODEAO-water mixture, 2) Friction factor and heat transfer were increased with insertion the heat transfer enhancement coil, 3) With increasing of pitch ratio, heat transfer was decreased, and 4) Heat transfer was decreased by the decreasing of inserting coil diameter.

  • The objectives in the present study are to investigate that the enhancement heat transfer was experimentally measured and was compared with the acoustic pressure obtained by numerical analysis. From the results of the present study, a strong Fluid motion initiated by ultrasonic vibrations can affect heat and mass transfer. This phenomenon. called acoustic streaming, clearly observed by PIV measurement leads to increase in velocity of a Fluid which is a crucial physical concept to explain the enhancement heat transfer. The heat transfer coefficient is increased with increase in the ultrasonic intensities. The largest enhancement heat transfer (about 26%) is measured at the ultrasonic intensity of 300W. Acoustic streaming results from sudden acoustic pressure variations in the liquid. The results of numerical analysis reveal that acoustic pressure is increased by 59.5% at the ultrasonic intensity of 300W. The higher acoustic pressure near four ultrasonic transducers develops more intensive flow destroying the flow instability. Also, the profiles of acoustic pressure variation are consistent with those of enhancement heat transfer.

  • Experiments were performed to characterize single-phase heat transfer behavior of submerged liquid jet with multiple nozzle normally impinging on the smooth and extended surfaces. Arrays of 9 and 36 nozzles were used, with diameters of 0.5 to 2.0mm providing nozzle area ratio (AR) from 0.05 to 0.2. The square pin fin arrays were chosen as extended surfaces and the effects of geometrical parameters such as fin height, the ratio of fin width to channel width on heat transfer enhancement were examined. Single nozzle characteristics were also evaluated for comparison. The results clearly showed that heat transfer enhancement could be realized by using multiple nozzles at the constant volume flow rate. The average Nusselt number of multiple nozzle impingement on the smooth surface was correlated by the following equation : Nu/$Pr\frac{1}{3}=0.94 Re^{0.56}N^{-0.12}AR^{0.50}$The average heat transfer coefficients of multiple nozzle impingement on the extended surfaces decreased with increasing fin height and the ratio of fin width to channel width. The effectiveness of ex-tended surfaces ranged from 1.5 to 3.5 depending on the fin height, the ratio of fin width to channel width of pin fin arrays, nozzle number and nozzle area ratio.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the enhancement of heat transfer without additional external power in the case of rectangular air jet impinging vertically on the flat heating surface. In an attempt to enhance the heat transfer rate in two-dimensional impinging jet, the technique used in the present study was placement of square rod bundles as a turbluence promoter in front of the heat transfer surface. The effects of the clearance between the flat plate and square rod, and the nozzle exit velocity on the heat transfer characteristics have been investigated experimentally. The results obtained through this study were summerized as follows. High heat transfer enhancement was achived by means of flow acceleration and thinning of boundary layer by inserting rods in front of the heating flat plate. The smaller the clearance between rod and heating plate was, the larger heat transfer effect became. Average Nusselt number reached maximum at $Re=5.76{\times}10^4$ and C=1㎜ and the enhancement rate of heat transfer became maxium at this condition with the enhancement ratio as high as about 1.427 when normalized by the flat plate value. The correlating equation of average Nusselt number and Reynolds number was obtained, which is $\bar{N}uo=1.324{\cdot}Re^{0.459}{\cdot}(C/A)^{-0.034}$.

  • In this study, we develop a method to achieve heat transfer enhancement inside a square duct with high aspect ratio without changing any inner structures. Especially, a method to lower the possible maximum temperature is suggested if constant heat flux is provided to single surface of square duct. Knowing the fact that heat transfer rate is inversely proportional to flow area, we proposed tapered channel concept which uses narrower gap toward the flow exit where the maximum temperature is expected. To maintain equivalent power consumption, inlet section has been enlarged. To verify the proposed concept, experimental tests have been performed.

  • Evaporation heat transfer characteristics by pulsating flow in a plate heat exchanger have been investigated experimentally in this study. R-l34a is evaporated by receiving heat from the hot water in the plate heat exchanger. The pulsating frequency in refrigerant side of the plate heat exchanger is varied in the range of 5-25 Hz. The operating pressure of R-l34a and mass flux of hot water are also varied 0.6-0.9 MPa and $45-105 kg/m^2s$, respectively. The experimental results indicate that evaporation heat transfer coefficient of pulsating flow is improved up to 6.3% compared with that of the steady flow at 10 Hz and $G_w=45 kg/m^2s$. It is also found that the evaporation heat transfer enhancement ratio is decreased with an increase in mass flux of hot water, and the evaporation heat transfer enhancement is little influenced by operating pressure of R-l34a.

  • In order to understand the laminar flow heat transfer enhancement by the swirl flow, the effects of heat transfer in a circular pipe with a twisted tape insert were investigated experimentally. In the present study, the uniform heat flux condition was considered. The laminar heat transfer correlations were developed using the least-square-fit from the surface temperature distribution of an electrically-heated pipe and flow property data. Average Nusselt number correlations with the twisted tape insert were expressed as a function of swirl parameter, Reynolds number and Prandtl number. In the case of the twisted ratio y = 6.05, the mean Nusselt number increased approximately 500% and the friction factor increased approximately 300%, compared to the case of the empty pipe, respectively.

  • A numerical investigation of the performance of the plate heat exchanger with rectangular winglet is conducted to examine the combined effect of vortex generator and louver fins. Velocity and temperature fields and spanwise averaged Nu and friction factor are presented. Enhancement of heat transfer and flow loss penalty is evident. A Parametric study of three factors (Re, angle of attack and louver angle) with levels of 5 (Re= 300, 500, 700, 900, 1100), 4($\alpha=15^{\circ}, 30^{\circ}, 45^{\circ}, 90^{\circ},$), and 4($\beta=0^{\circ}, 15^{\circ}, 30^{\circ}, 45^{\circ}$), respectively, indicates the performance defined by the ratio of heat transfer enhancement to flow loss penalty shows monotonic behavior for each parameter alone but the interactions between parameters is found to be considerable effect on the performance of heat exchanger and should be considered in design. The effect of stamping is also examined.

  • In this study, we investigate the pool boiling enhancement caused by perforated plates on top of a smooth surface. We conduct tests using R-123 at atmospheric pressure. It was shown that perforated plates significantly enhanced the pool boiling of the smooth surface. The reason may be attributed to the increased bubble contact area between the plates. The results showed that the enhancement ratio was dependent on the heat flux. At high heat flux, the enhancement ratio increased as the porosity increased. However, at low heat flux, the enhancement ratio decreased as the porosity increased. For the present investigation, the optimum configuration had a pore diameter of 2.0 mm, pore pitch of $2.5mm{\times}5.0mm$ or $5.0mm{\times}5.0mm$, and a gap width of 0.5 mm, which yielded heat-transfer coefficients that are close to those of GEWA-T. The optimum porosity for R-123 was significantly larger than that of water or ethanol. The reason for this may be the large liquid-to-vapor density ratio along with the small latent heat of vaporization of R-123. The perforated plates yielded smaller boiling hysteresis compared with that of the smooth surface.
