Synthesis and field emission of double-walled carbon nanotubes

  • We have investigated the synthesis and field emission properties of high-quality double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) using a catalytic chemical vapor deposition method and a hydrogen arc discharge method. The produced carbon materials using a catalytic CVD method indicated high-purity DWCNT bundles free of amorphous carbon covering on the surface. By adopting a hydrogen arc discharge method, we could obtained high-purity DWCNTs in large-scale. DWCNTs showed low turn-on voltage and higher emission stability compared with SWCNTs.

  • Collaborative robots, designed for direct interaction with humans have limited adaptability to environmental changes. This study addresses this limitation by implementing a barista robot system using AI technology. To overcome limitations of traditional collaborative robots, a model that applies a real-time object detection algorithm to a 6-degree-of-freedom robot arm to recognize and control the position of random cups is proposed. A coffee ordering application is developed, allowing users to place orders through the app, which the robot arm then automatically prepares. The system is connected to ROS via TCP/IP socket communication, performing various tasks through state transitions and gripper control. Experimental results confirmed that the barista robot could autonomously handle processes of ordering, preparing, and serving coffee.

Increased Tolerance to Furfural by Introduction of Polyhydroxybutyrate Synthetic Genes to Escherichia coli

  • Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), the most well-known polyhydroxyalkanoate, is a bio-based, biodegradable polymer that has the potential to replace petroleum-based plastics. Lignocellulose hydrolysate, a non-edible resource, is a promising substrate for the sustainable, fermentative production of PHB. However, its application is limited by the generation of inhibitors during the pretreatment processes. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of PHB production in E. coli in the presence of inhibitors found in lignocellulose hydrolysates. Our results show that the introduction of PHB synthetic genes (bktB, phaB, and phaC from Ralstonia eutropha H16) improved cell growth in the presence of the inhibitors such as furfural, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and vanillin, suggesting that PHB synthetic genes confer resistance to these inhibitors. In addition, increased PHB production was observed in the presence of furfural as opposed to the absence of furfural, suggesting that this compound could be used to stimulate PHB production. Our findings indicate that PHB production using lignocellulose hydrolysates in recombinant E. coli could be an innovative strategy for cost-effective PHB production, and PHB could be a good target product from lignocellulose hydrolysates, especially glucose.

  • 본 논문에서는 심장 돌연사(sudden cardiac death, SCD)의 주된 원인인 세동(fibrillation)을 낮은 에너지에서 효율적으로 제거할 수 있는 biphasic 자동형 제세동기를 개발하였다. 개발한 제세동기는 고전압 충 방전부와 신호처리부를 포함하는 하드웨어와 세동검출 알고리즘과 시스템 제어 알고리즘의 소프트웨어로 구성하였다. 개발한 시스템의 안정성과 효용성을 검증하기 위하여, 실험실 환경에서 160 번의 연속적인 충 방전 테스트를 통하여 시스템의 안정성을 확인하였으며, ECG simulator 에서 발생되는 6 종의 세동신호를 적용하여 100%의 실시간 검출능력을 확인하였다.

  • An estimation algorithm based on training of fuzzy logic system using back-propagation is proposed, in this paper, for determining cardiac output in the TAH. The proposed estimation utilizes only a motor current waveform generated from the moving actuator of the electromechanical TAH without using any extra transducers as an information source for estimation. In in vitro tests, the resultant estimation performance was acceptable to alppy the proposed algorithm to animal experiments and further clinical applications.

  • This article describes the Autonomous Vehicle #1 (A1), which won the 2010 Autonomous Vehicle Competition (AVC) organized by Hyundai Kia automotive group. The A1 was developed for high speed and stable driving without human intervention. The autonomous system of A1 was developed based on in-vehicle networks, electronic control units, and embedded software. Novel environment perception and navigation algorithm were evaluated and validated through the AVC. In this paper, we presented the system and software architecture of A1.
