  • A method based on the lower-bound theorem of limit analysis is presented for the capacity assessment of nodal zones in strut-and-tie models. The idealized geometry of the nodal zones is formed by the intersection of effective widths of the framing struts and ties. The stress distribution is estimated by dividing the nodal zones into constant stress triangles separated by lines of stress discontinuity. The strength adequacy is verified by comparing the biaxial stress field in each triangle with the corresponding failure criteria. The approach has been implemented in a computer-based strut-and-tie tool called CAST (Computer-Aided Strut-and-Tie). An application example is also presented to illustrate the approach.

  • This paper suggests a new methodology of evolutionary computations - an Adaptive Evolutionary Algorithm (AEA) for solving the Economic Load Dispatch (ELD) problem which has piecewise quadratic cost functions and prohibited operating zones with many local minima. AEA uses a genetic algorithm (GA) and an evolution strategy (ES) in an adaptive manner in order to take merits of two different evolutionary computations: global search capability of GA and local search capability of ES. In the reproduction procedure, proportions of the population by GA and the population by ES are adaptively modulated according to the fitness. Case studies illustrate the superiority of the proposed methods to existing conventional methods in power generation cost and computation time. The results demonstrate that the AEA can be applied successfully in the solution of ELD with piecewise quadratic cost functions and prohibited operating zones

  • In this paper, we address a layout design problem for determining a K-class-based dedicated storage layout in an automated storage retrieval system. K-class-based dedicated storage employs K zones in which lots from a class of products are stored randomly. Zones form a partition of storage locations. Our objective function is to minimize the expected single command travel time, which is expressed as a set function of space requirements for zones, average demand rates from classes, and one-way travel times from the pickup/deposit station to locations. We construct a heuristic algorithm based on analytical results and a local search method, the methodology deveolped can be used with easily-available data by warehouse planners to improve the throughput capacity of a conventional warehouse as well as an AS/RS.

  • This study extends the Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) application to delineate the saturated zones in shallow sediment and evaluate the groundwater flow in both downward and upward directions. Dry, partially and fully saturated zones and water level in the subsurface can be recognized from this study. High resolution seepage velocity in vertical direction was estimated from the temperature data in the fully saturated zone. By a single profile, water level can be detected and seepage velocity in saturated zone can be estimated. Furthermore, thermal gradient analysis serves as a new technique to verify unsaturated and saturated zones in the subsurface. The vertical seepage velocity distribution in the recognized saturated zone is then analyzed with improvement of Bredehoeft and Papaopulos' model. This new approach provides promising potential in real-time monitoring of groundwater movement.

  • Based on the three reinforced concrete panel tests, a softened stress-strain curve of concrete subjected to reversed cyclic loading is proposed. The proposed model consists of seven stages in the compressive zones and six stages in the tensile zones. The proposed model is verified by comparing to the test results.

  • The total number of deaths by traffic accidents is decreasing every year in our country. However, in 2009, children died in traffic accidents at a rate of 2.3 deaths per 100,000 children, which was higher than the average of OECD countries (1.9 deaths per 100,000 children). In particular, traffic accidents are showing rapid increase in school zone during the past 2 years because of problems in the designation and management of school zone. Traffic safety facilities such as road sign, reflector mirror, speed bump have the ultimate limit of vehicle accidents prevention. Thus, in school zone, children safety is still not guaranteed due to illegal parking and the absence of driver's awareness of safety. Therefore, In order to protect children from traffic accidents within school zones, we have realized a safe school zone system, which enables the drivers to better know the intended school zones and creates pedestrian environment through unmanned monitoring camera, using LabVIEW.

  • In this study, effect of horizontal in situ stress on failure mechanism around underground openings excavated in isotropic, elastic rock zones is investigated. For estimating the plastic zone occurrence, an induced stress influence area approach (Bray Equations) was modified to define critical stress ratio according to the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. Results obtained from modified calculations were compared with results of some other analytical solutions for plastic zone thickness estimation and the numerical modelling (finite difference method software, FLAC2D) study. Plastic zone and its geometry around tunnels were analyzed for different in situ stress conditions. The modified equations gave similar results with those obtained from the other approaches. However, safer results were calculated using the modified equations for high in situ stress conditions and excessive ratio of horizontal to vertical in situ stresses. As the outcome of this study, the modified equations are suggested to use for estimating the plastic zone occurrence and its thickness around the tunnels with circular cross-section.

  • A superconducting parallel bifilar winding with one strand in each branch was tested and analyzed. When the superconducting parallel bifilar winding was quenched by fault current, it showed the so-called 'fast quench' and the results of experiment well explained the resistance curve. Also the experiments confirm that the current redistribution of magnetically coupled strands develops new normal zones after the initial quench, and that the size of normal zones at an early stage increases almost linearly as dI/dt increases. By these results, we could explain the resistance rise of superconducting parallel bifilar winding when it is quenched by the current above the critical value.

  • An injection experiment was carried ut to investigate the pressure domain within which hydromechanical coupling influences considerably the hydrologic behavior of a granite rock mass. The resulting database is used for testing a numerical model dedicated to the analysis of such hydromechanical interactions. These measurements were performed in an open hole section, isolated from shallower zones by a packer set at a depth of 275 m and extending down to 840 m. They consisted in a series of flow meter injection tests, at increasing injection rates. Field results showed that conductive fractures from a dynamic and interdependent network, that individual fracture zones could not be adequately modeled as independent systems, that new fluid intakes zones appeared when pore pressure exceeded the minimum principal stress magnitude in that well, and that pore pressures much larger than this minimum stress could be further supported by the circulated fractures. These characteristics give rise to the question of the influence of the morphology of the natural fracture network in a rock mass under anisotropic stress conditions on the effects of hydromechanical couplings.
