THREE-DIMENSIONAL FLOW PHENOMENA IN A WIRE-WRAPPED 37-PIN FUEL BUNDLE FOR SFR

  • Three-dimensional flow phenomena in a wire-wrapped 37-pin fuel assembly mock-up of a Japanese loop-type sodium-cooled fast reactor, Monju, were investigated with a numerical analysis using a general-purpose commercial computational fluid dynamics code, CFX. Complicated and vortical flow phenomena in the wire-wrapped 37-pin fuel assembly were captured by a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes flow simulation using a shear stress transport turbulence model. The main purpose of the current study is to understand the three-dimensional complex flow phenomena in a wire-wrapped fuel assembly to support the license issue for the core design. Computational fluid dynamics results show good agreement with friction factor correlation models. The secondary flow in the corner and edge subchannels is much stronger than that in an interior subchannel. The axial velocity averaged in the corner and edge subchannels is higher than that averaged in the interior subchannels. Three-dimensional multiscale vortex structures start to be formed by an interaction between secondary flows around each wire-wrapped pin. Behavior of the large-scale vortex structures in the corner and edge subchannels is closely related to the relative position between the hexagonal duct wall and the helically wrapped wire spacer. The small-scale vortex is axially developed in the interior subchannels. Furthermore, a driving force on each wire spacer surface is closely related to the relative position between the hexagonal duct wall and the wire spacer.

  • The conventional channel selection method for a ZigBee communication network basically detects the energy values in all channels. In the ISM band, no license is required to use channels in this band, so there may exist various interference factors in this band. It is well known that WLAN is the major interference factor degrading the performance of ZigBee in the ISM band. In this paper, we propose an efficient channel selection algorithm which uses the pattern of WLAN channel uses as the a priori information. By using the proposed algorithm, we may save the time required to select channels for the ZigBee communications.

FUEL PERFORMANCE CODE COSMOS FOR ANALYSIS OF LWR UO2 AND MOX FUEL

  • The paper briefs a fuel performance code, COSMOS, which can be utilized for an analysis of the thermal behavior and fission gas release of fuel, up to a high burnup. Of particular concern are the models for the fuel thermal conductivity, the fission gas release, and the cladding corrosion and creep in $UO_2$ fuel. In addition, the code was developed so as to consider the inhomogeneity of MOX fuel, which requires restructuring the thermal conductivity and fission gas release models. These improvements enhanced COSMOS's precision for predicting the in-pile behavior of MOX fuel. The COSMOS code also extends its applicability to the instrumented fuel test in a research reactor. The various in-pile test results were analyzed and compared with the code's prediction. The database consists of the $UO_2$ irradiation test up to an ultra-high burnup, power ramp test of MOX fuel, and instrumented MOX fuel test in a research reactor after base irradiation in a commercial reactor. The comparisons demonstrated that the COSMOS code predicted the in-pile behaviors well, such as the fuel temperature, rod internal pressure, fission gas release, and cladding properties of MOX and $UO_2$ fuel. This sufficient accuracy reveals that the COSMOS can be utilized by both fuel vendors for fuel design, and license organizations for an understanding of fuel in-pile behaviors.

  • Researches for image processing have been actively progress due to the development of various hardware. For example, in order to prevent various types of crime by a vehicle, there is a method of detecting the location of a criminal vehicle using the existing CCTV in real time. However, certain types of systems and high-performance system requirements make it difficult to apply to existing equipment. In this paper proposes a search algorithm that construct a file database of Korean standard license plate information so that specific vehicles can be quickly searched using existing equipment. In order to evaluate the performance of the file database and the search algorithm proposed in this paper, we set up the search targets at various locations and the results showed that the search algorithm could always check the information by searching the vehicle within a certain time.

  • LoRa LPWAN network system uses a license-exempt wireless communication system and implements data measurement through the integrated sensor based on Mems and wireless communication of existing measurement sensors. This system has superior technological / economic superiority using existing network and long distance communication compared to existing wireless measurement system, and secured economical efficiency by minimizing system construction equipment compared to wired measurement system. It is confirmed that the economical efficiency can be reduced by 41% compared to the conventional wired metering system. Since the LoRa LPWAN network system is excellent in terms of maintenance and operation, if installed in many bridges in Korea in the future, it will be developed as an excellent system in the maintenance of bridges.   • The incidence of traffic accidents is increasing every year, and Korea is among the top OECD countries. In order to improve this, various road traffic laws are being implemented, and various traffic control methods using equipment such as unmanned speed cameras and traffic control cameras are being applied. However, as drivers avoid crackdowns by detecting the location of traffic control cameras in advance through navigation, a mobile crackdown system that can be cracked down is needed, and research is needed to increase the recognition rate of vehicle license plates on the side of the road for accurate crackdown. This paper proposes a method to improve the vehicle number recognition rate on the road side by applying a gradient correction algorithm using image processing. In addition, custom data learning was conducted using a CNN-based YOLO algorithm to improve character recognition accuracy. It is expected that the algorithm can be used for mobile traffic control cameras without restrictions on the installation location.

A Heuristic Outlier Filtering Algorithm for Generating Link Travel Time using Taxi GPS Probes in Urban Arterial (링크통행시간 생성을 위한 이상치 제거 알고리즘 개발)

  • Facing congestion, people want to know traffic information about their routes, especially real-time link travel time (LTT). In this paper, as a sequel paper of the previous non-taxi based LTT generating study by Choi et al. (1998), taxi based GPS probes have been tried to produce LTT for urban arterials. Taxis in itself are good deployment mode of GPS probes although it by nature experiences boarding and alighting time noises which should be accounted. A heuristic real-time dynamic outlier filter algorithm for taxi GPS probe has been developed focusing on urban arterials. An actual traffic survey for dynamic link travel times has been conducted using license plate method for the test arterials of Seoul city transportation network. With the algorithm, it is estimated that 70% of outliers have been filtered and the relative error has been improved by 73.7%. The filtering algorithm developed here would be expected to be in use for other spatial sites with some calibration efforts. Some limitations and future research agenda have also been discussed.

  • The generation, verification and validation of Emergency Procedures for Nuclear Power Plant is a difficult and complex process. Atomic Energy Control Board(AECB) requires that emergency procedure and plan be produced before obtaining the Operating License, that is, detailed plans and procedures to handle emergency situations for both on-site actions and off-site actions be developed. In this report Emergency Operating Procedures Standard for Canadian Nuclear Utilities which makes reference to U. S. practices and the current direction of emergency procedures for CAN-DU reactors are reviewed and compared based on scope(events covered), methodology (event-oriented or symptom-oriented or hybrid) and format(method of presentation) preponderantly, and an attempt is made to integrate these procedures and as a result the recommended strategy for Wolsong unit 2, 3, & 4 is presented as event-specific procedures, generic procedures(when event is not diagnosed) and whose format is combination of logic diagram and text.

Improvements of the Bidding Process through Order Case Analysis of Specialty Construction (전문건설공사의 발주사례분석을 통한 입찰업무의 개선방안)

  • In recent years, the number of construction projects carried out to repair and reinforce newly built structures and facilities has been on the rise compared to the number of new construction projects, accounting for more than 90 percents of all construction projects carried out by specialty construction companies. However, as some of the ordering parties fill out the required tasks incorrectly, the wrong information on construction bids is announced, and the specialty construction companies that hold a license and technology are unable to get the job at the right time. As such, it is critical to prevent unnecessary time and expense related to the correction of incorrect bid announcements by providing accurate information and definitions, because the tasks of each specialty construction work stipulated in the framework act of construction industry are vague. Therefore, the causes and problems were analyzed based on the correction cases of bid information, and a plan that can address the problem will be proposed. The result of this study can be utilized as fundamental data to achieve an institutional improvement in the bidding service for the specialty construction companies.

  • Use of disposer at the kitchens of Korean apartments is inevitable in treating their foodwaste having a water content of more than 80%. Also we have to ensure that this extra disposer-foodwaste BOD loadings be treated properly by installing/operating a pre-treatment system before this wastewater enters public sewer system. However, the degree of BOD removal should not be excessive since a BOD/N ratio higher than 5 is required for removing N/P at a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The removal of BOD/N in the pretreatment system rather than BOD alone can be an alternative solution in solving this problem. The particles separated by sedimentation, screen or packed-bed can be anaerobically digested at apartment sites to generate biogas that can be used for simple digester heating and to generate volatile fatty acids (VFAs) for nitrogen removal. We suggest that Korean government grants a temporary license (say for 5 years) to foodwaste treatment companies in collaboration with apartment construction companies which may do business and develop various kinds of disposer-foodwaste treatment systems in diverse wastewater discharge systems of Korean apartments.
