  • In this study the usefulness of Gas Chromatograph for the measurement of engine exhaust gas composition was confirmed. It was found that the composition of standard gas which was used for the calibration of Gas Chromatograph should not be greatly different from that of exhaust gas. Although self-evident, it cannot be overemphasized that utmost attention should be paid to prevent even a minute amount of air being mixed into the gas throughout the sampling process.

  • This paper presents a neural network approach to control exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) in a Liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) engine. In order to meet Increasingly stringent automotive exhaust emission regulations, alternative fuels such as LPG engines have been developed in many countries. HC&CO emissions of LPG engines can be easily reduced through air-fuel ratio control, but the control effect on NOx reduction is not good enough. Consequently EGR system is introduced to achieve a significant reduction in NOx emissions. Conventional EGR control uses the mapping method.   • The calibration of O.M.D is carried out experimentally and is analysed theoretically. O.M.D experimentally measures the change in optical density of artificially contaminated oil which contains Fe powder of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 70, 100, 200 ppm. The change in optical density, D$_1$ means the logarithmic transmittance of I$_0$ over $I_1 D_2$ denotes the logarithmic transmittance I$_2$ over I$_1$ on electromagnetic force which arranges the ferrous particles along the line of magnetic force. The theoretical D$_1$ which increases linearly as increasing Fe concentrations, is analysed by light attenuation theory. The difference between theoretical D$_1$ and experimental D$_1$ is due to the attenuation of micro bubbles and the agglomeration of fine particles in the sample oil. The calibrated O.M.D is applied to the sample oil from the high-powered diesel engine. Also the results are compared with those out of the off-line techniques such as JOAP and ICP.

Measurement of two dimensional oil film thickness in piston by induced fluorescence method (유기형광법을 이용한 피스톤 유막두께의 이차원적 측정)

  • The distribution of oil film thickness in piston were measured by induced fluorescence method. A Xe lamp was used as light source. Coumarine-6 was mixed with oil as the fluorescent dye. Fluorescent signal which is proportional to the oil film thickness was acquired by CCD camera and transmitted to the personal computer as video signal. In order to solve the problem of measurement system, irregular distribution and unstability of light intensity, as well as to know the relationship between the oil film thickness and output signal, three different calibration techniques were used. Motoring and firing tests were performed in a single cylinder research engine with transparent liner. By analyzing the oil film thickness converted from the photographed image, it was observed that each of three piston rings scrapes the oil both upward and downward and oil film thickness is not uniform horizontally at a given piston land. The amount of oil in each land was considerably affected by the engine load. It is thought that the blow-by gas blows the oil down to the crankcase.

  • During the conceptual design of turboprop aircraft, the power effect driven from rotating propeller is typically obtained from empirical data. In the present paper, propeller power effect was obtained by using unsteady three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver with $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model for the accurate prediction of turboprop aircraft performance. In order to simulate the relative motion between propeller and fuselage, unsteady sliding mesh method was used. During simulation, three flow conditions such as climb, cruise and descending flight were selected considering the flight envelop of the real turboprop aircraft. For the correction of aerodynamic coefficients, the thrust effect of engine exhaust gas was included based on the engine manufacturer's data. Using the computational results, the correction table for the aerodynamic coefficient of turboprop aircraft was suggested for the performance analysis of turboprop aircraft.

  • Flash boiling mechanism in the injector interferes with fine fuel metering in a liquid phase LPG injection engine. This study presents a mathematical model to precisely predict an injection quantity. A calibration procedure of injection quantity, which is very prompt and precise in measuring, is developed using a gas analyzer. According to this procedure, injection quantity can be obtained under various fuel compositions, temperatures and injection pressures. The release pressure of liquid phase LPG is estimated based on these experimental data. Although the release pressure is much lower than the saturation pressure, it is linearly proportional to the saturation pressure.

  • The automotive industry is making various efforts to cope with ever-increasing exhaust emissions and fuel economy regulations. However, this often results in degraded NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) performance. For example, we proposed the causes and improvements for the noise generated by the high-pressure pump noise of a gasoline engine, the change of acceleration noise due to dual injection of MPI (Multi-Point Injection) and GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection), the noise of a gasoline turbocharger, and the combustion noise deteriorated due to the injection parameters calibration in a diesel engine. Since these noises are caused by the high frequency noise, and the driver feels the rough sound quality, efforts to reduce them with proper NVH measures are indispensable.

  • A vision-based blank alignment unit for a press automation line is introduced in this paper. A press is a machine tool that changes the shape of a blank by applying pressure and is widely used in industries requiring mass production. In traditional press automation lines, a mechanical centering unit, which consists of guides and ball bearings, is employed to align a blank before a robot inserts it into the press. However it can only align limited sized and shaped of blanks. Moreover it cannot be applied to a process where more than two blanks are simultaneously inserted. To overcome these problems, we developed a press centering unit by means of vision sensors for press automation lines. The specification of the vision system is determined by considering information of the blank and the required accuracy. A vision application S/W with pattern recognition, camera calibration and monitoring functions is designed to successfully detect multiple blanks. Through real experiments with an industrial robot, we validated that the proposed system was able to align various sizes and shapes of blanks, and successfully detect more than two blanks which were simultaneously inserted.

  • Planar laser-induced fluorescence(PLIF) has been widely used to obtain two dimensional fuel distribution. Acetone PLIF is chosen because fluorescence signal from acetone as a fluorescent tracer is less sensitive to oxygen quenching than other dopants. Acetone PLIF is applied to measure quantitative air excess ratio distribution in an engine fueled with LPG. Acetone is excited by KrF excimer laser (248nm) and its fluorescence image is acquired by ICCD camera with a cut-off filter to suppress Mie scattering from the laser light. For the purpose of quantifying PLIF signal, an image processing method including the correction of laser sheet beam profile is suggested. Raw images are divided by each intensity of laser energy and profile of laser sheet beam. Inhomogeneous fluorescence images scaled with the reference data, which is taken by a calibration process, are converted to air excess ratio distribution. This investigation shows instantaneous quantitative measurement of planar air excess ratio distribution for gaseous fuel.

Determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in used lubricating car oils (차량용 폐윤활유에 함유된 다환 방향족 탄화수소 (PAHs)의 분석)

  • Determination of some PAHs in used engine oils have been carried out by extraction of the components into acetonitrile followed by GC/FID and synchronous spectrofluorimetric technique. 7 PAHs, such as acenaphthene (Ace), anthracene (Anth), benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), chrysene (Chry), phenanthrene (Phen), fluoranthene (Ft), and perlyrene (Per) in used engine oil sample were able to determine separately by synchronous spectrofluorimetry. Calibration curves for those components were linear for the concentration range of 0.4~166 ppb PAHs with the corelation factor of 0.9985~0.9999. The peak areas produced by GC/FID split ratio program were used for the calibration curves of the other 8 PAHs. Detection sensitivity of the synchronous spectrofluorimetry seems to be 100 times more sensitive than GC/FID method. The total amount of PAHs in the used engine oil were 5.5 ng/g for LNG (bus), 10.5 ng/g for LPG(taxi), 92.2 ng/g for gasoline-passenger car, and 130 ng/g for diesel trailer, respectively.
