  • This paper describes evaluation of oxidation stability for diesel engine oils by Hot-tube oxidation tester at high temperature. Evaluation was rated by visual inspection of lacquer in capillary glass tube and TAN determination of used oil. Air, NO$_2$-air and SO$_2$-air mixed gases were used as oxidizing gas. One oil which has low oxidation stability is selected and reformulated by addition of some additives such as antioxidant, detergent and disperant to improve oxidation stability. As a results of reformulation, antioxidant and detergent was effective for improvement of high temperture oxidation stability on diesel engine oil.

  • In order to establish a new temperature criterion to prevent the pistons from ring sticking due to deposit formation, bench test and engine test were performed. The effects of oil degradation and temperature on deposit formation was studied by a modified panel coking test. Oil degradation was analyzed by FTIR. Oil oxidation and nitration were selected as a factors to evaluate oil degradation. Bench test results show that oil oxidation is more effective to the deposit formation than oil nitration. And the temperature increase accelerates deposit formation and deposit formation increase rapidly above 26$0^{\circ}C$. Especially, in case of degraded oil, the deposit formation increases so rapidly that ring sticking can occur. The effect of piston temperature on the deposit formation was confirmed by engine test.

The Effects of Base Oil Quality on the Performance of GF-3 Engine Oil

  • The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) GF-3 passenger car engine oil specification has been introduced commercially in July 2001. The new specification oil provides superior performance in terms of fuel economy, control of high temperature deposits, and oil consumption. These enhanced performances of GF-3 engine oil need high quality base oil as well as a better additive system. In this paper, the effect of base oil on various performances of ILSAC GF-3 engine oil was investigated. From the GF-3 sequence engine tests, Group III base oil shows better performance in fuel economy retention, oxidation and varnish control than combination of group III and group II or group III and group 1.

  • Recently, the population of vehicles using LPG as fuel has been increasing due to relatively low fuel price and low tax. Although gasoline engine oils we usually used to lubricate LPG engines, some troubles such as oil thickening and TBN depletion were found in them under severe operating condition. In order to investigate the deterioration mechanism of lubricants in LPG engine, field trials were performed. The results from the field trials showed that the deterioration of oils in LPG engine is different from that in normal gasoline engine. LPG engine oil was deteriorated mainly through oxidation and nitration at high temperature rather than contamination of fuel combustion products.

  • ILSAC GF 3/API SL specification will be adopted in July 2001. The background and characteristics of GF3 specification is reviewed. GF3 specification consists of five new engine tests, two new bench tests and new limits on three bench tests currently used to define ILSAC GF-2. GF 3 engine oil shows good performance compared to GF2 engine oil in fuel efficiency, protecting ability the emission catalyst and high temperature oxidation stability.

  • A methodology was developed for evaluation of oxidation stability of base stocks and engine oils. Analytical procedures for both classes of lubricants were based on the ASTM standards D 6186 and/or E 2009. The procedures were applied to a set of engine oils of the SAE 5W-30 specification, and to a set of several hydrocracked and solvent neutral base oils, both with and without addition of antioxidant. A potential of a pressure DSC for diagnostic purposed was also demonstrated by monitoring the engine oil ageing during its operation in heavy-duty engine.

  • As the additives of engine oil, Mo-DTP and Zn-DTP were studied by experimental works. These additives were added to the engine oil with various ratios, which was an attempt to find out the best ratio at which the wear and friction can be reduced effectively; Mo-DTP is belived to be able to decrease the frictioh of the sliding metal, while Zn-DTP is known as a very stable additive for oxidation at high temperature in addition to the good antiwear property. This study showed that the optimum addition ratio of Mo-DTP and Zn-DTP is 3:2. This oil made it possible to slide steel with minimum wear and low friction over various lovels of load at moderate temperature. But as the oil temperature increased, the wear slid with Mo-DTP oil was increased more. The reason of this result was that Mo-DTP deteriorated the property of oil at high temperature by the higher oxidation and viscosity of Mo-DTP oil than that of Zn-DTP oil.

  • A model which calculates the hydrocarbon emissions from spark ignition engines is presented The model contains the formation of HC emissions due to both crevices around piston ring top land and oil films on the cylinder wall. The model also considers in-cylinder oxidation and exhaust port oxidation of desorbed HC from crevices and oil films after combustion process. The HC emissions model utilizes the results of SI engine cycle simulation. The model predicts well the trends of HC emissions from the engines when varying engine parameters.

가솔린 LPG 엔진오일의 사용에 따른 물리적, 화학적 성질의 변화에 관한 연구 (A Study of the Changes in Physical and Chemical Properities of Oil Used in Gasoline and LPG Engine)

  • This study is concerned with the change of physical and chemical properties of the used oil in gasoline and LPG engine. The used oils of engine were sampled from dynamometer and cars. The field tests of car were done in city and on highway. The properties of oil were TAN, TBN, visocity, oxidation, ZDTP depletion factor and etc. Also the relation between the chemical change and antiwear property was studied. From the study, it was shown that the decrease of antiwear property of used oil was depended on the changes of ZDTP depletion factor as well as TAN (total acid number). Also, it was found that the oil used by LPG car was deteriorated within the shortest distance among the other gasoline cars. The antiwear property of oil decreased as the running distance increased. The gasoline engine oil drove mainly on highway was the least deteriorate of properities for the same running distance.

디젤 엔진오일의 사용에 따른 물성 변화에 관한 연구 (A study of the Property Changes of Oil Used in Diesel Engine)

  • This study is concerned with the property changes(chemical and mechanical) of the used oil in diesel engine, which were sampled from a test engine with dynamometer and various cars. The properties of oil are TAN, viscosity, oxidation, ZDTP depletion factor and etc. Also the relation between the change of chemical and antiwear property of used oil was strongly related to ZDTP depletion factor as wall as the change of TAN(total acid number), sulfation and pentan unsoluble contents which were reated to the formation of protect film in sliding area. The oil used in pick-up(small) truck engine was deteriorated within the shortest distance than that of other cars. The antiwear property of used oil was decreased sharply as the running distance were over 5,000km. The oil used to mini bus was the least to deteriorate of properities for the funning distance.
