In this paper, a computer program for simulation of 4 cycle diesel engines including intake and exhaust manifold system is developed. The wave action theory is applied for optimization of the intake and exhaust manifold system. The calculation results of this computer program is finely accurate and agreed well with experimental results. Accordingly, it is recognized that the developed computer program can be utillized very usefully for the design of intake and manifold system. And then, influential factors of the engine performance in the design of intake manifold is numerically investigated by the calculation only. As the results it is concluded that the inertia one of the dynamic effects on the intake and exhaust maninfold affects mainly the engine performance and the pulsation one is a side effect.

A model which calculates the hydrocarbon emissions from spark ignition engines is presented The model contains the formation of HC emissions due to both crevices around piston ring top land and oil films on the cylinder wall. The model also considers in-cylinder oxidation and exhaust port oxidation of desorbed HC from crevices and oil films after combustion process. The HC emissions model utilizes the results of SI engine cycle simulation. The model predicts well the trends of HC emissions from the engines when varying engine parameters.

The prediction of performance, exhaust emissions and EGR effect is made by the SI engine cycle simulation. In this simulation several models are employed - two zome, thermodynamic combustion, mass fraction burned, heat transfer, chemical equilibrium, chemical kinetics for NOx, laminar flame speed for ignition delay. The chemical species in burned gas considered are 13 species-CO$_{2}$, CO, $O_{2}$, H$_{2}$O, H$_{2}$,OH, H, O, N$_{2}$, NO$_{2}$, N, Ar - and the cylinder pressure, burned and unburned zone temperature and composition of gas are calculated at each crank angle through the compression, ignition delay, combustion and expansion process. To check the validity of the model, experimental study is done for measuring emissions, combustion pressure and engine output. The predicted values for pressure and emissions show qualitative agreement with the measured data and the EGR effect also shows similar tendency.
Recent engine development has focused mainly on the improvement of engine efficiency and output emissions. The improvements in efficiency are being made by friction reduction, combustion improvement and thermodynamic cycle modification. Computer simulation has been developed to predict the performance of a spark ignition engine. The effects of various cylinder pressure, heat release, flame temperature, unburned gas temperature, flame properties, laminar burning velocity, turbulence burning velocity, etc. were simulated. The simulation and analysis show several meaningful results. The objective of the present study is to develop a combustion model for a spark ignition engine running with isooctane as a fuel and predicting its behavior.

This paper presents an approach of complex control method(CCM) real-time simulation and rapid prototyping for aero-engine control system and describes its principle and realization in detail. This approach is mainly based on MATLAB/RTW for rapid prototyping from system modeling to embedded implementation. According to the simulation results between automatic code and manual code for an aeroengine multi-variable control method, it shows that this approach is feasible and effective, and not only decreases development cycle but also improves the reliability and universality. So a series of problems can be resolved during the simulation stage and rapid application to prototype testing.

The computer program for the prediction of the volumetric efficiency of 4-cycle single cylinder diesel engine was developed using the characteristic method which considers the effects of friction, heat transfer and specific heat. The results of calculation by this program are as follows; 1. The back flowing was arised at the beginning and the closing stage of inlet valve, and the back flowing mass and velocity decrease as the engine speed increases. 2. The volumetric efficiency varies with the engine speed and the length of inlet manifold. There was an optimum length of inlet manifold for each specified engine speed. 3. The pressure fluctuation and friction effect in the inlet manifold became very important factors for the determination of the volumetric efficiency.

Recent developments of S.I. engine, aiming to higher power, better fuel economy, lower air pollution and better driveability, have much focused on the importance of the role of computer simulation in engine research and development. In this point of view, improving engine performance requires finding some means to improve volumetric efficiency. Up to now there have been several attempts to optimize the intake and exhaust system of internal system of S.I. engine by computer simulation. There appear to be few studies available, however, of such simulation & experimental studies applied to the optimization of exhaust manifold configuration. In this study, gas exchange & power process of 4 cylinder S.I. Engine was studies numerically & experimentally, and governing equation of a one-dimensional unsteady compressible flow and combustion process were respectively solved by a characteristics method and 2-zone model. The aim of this study is to predict and investigate the influence of pressure wave interaction at the exhaust systems on engine performance with widely differing exhaust manifold configuration.
This study was performed to calculate the swirl ratio of a diesel engine intake port by a 1D computer simulation under actual engine operating conditions. The swirl ratio of the intake port was simulated according to the change of the engine speed during the operation of the motoring without fuel injection. The swirl ratio of the intake port was simulated according to changes in the crank angle during the four-cycle operation of intake, compression, expansion and exhaust. The swirl ratio represented by the three regions of the piston, center and squish was simulated. Among the three regions, the piston-region swirl ratio is important for effective air-fuel mixing in the engine cylinder. In particular, it was confirmed during the simulation that the piston swirl ratio before and after the compression top dead center (TDC) point when fuel is injected in the DI diesel engine can have a significant effect on the mixing of air and fuel. It was desirable to set the average piston swirl ratio over a crank angle section before and after compression TDC as the representative swirl ratio of the cylinder head intake port according to the change of the engine speed.

The simulation program which predicts the gas behavior in a spark ignition engine has been developed and verified by the comparison with the experimental results foy the MPI engine, naturally aspirated and turbochared engines with a carburettor. First paper describes the calculations of the behavior of gas in the intake and exhaust system. The generalized method of characteristics including friction, heat transfer, area change and entropy gradients was used to analyse the pipe flow The constant-Pressure model was applied for the analysis of the flow through engine valved, and the constant-pressure perfect-mixing model was applied for the flow at manifold junction. The concept of the sudden area change was used for the muffler and catalytic convertor. Fer the plenum chamber in an MPI engine, constant-pressure model and constant-volume model were both examined. Through the comparison of predicted results with experiments, the simulation program was verified by showing good prediction of the behavior of IC engine qualitatively and quantitatively under wide range of operating conditions.

The closed cycle diesel system is operated in closed circuit system where there is non air breathing with working fluid consisted of the combination of oxygen, argon and recycled exhaust gas for obtaining underwater or underground power sources. this study has been carried out to analysis the performance of closed cycle system by means of investigation on the combustion characteristics of diesel engine MTU8V183TE52 operating in open, semi-closed, and closed cycle modes. The combustion in closed mode starts a little bit earlier than in open cycle mode. The oxygen concentration and fuel consumption at 240kW closed cycle running are 21∼24% by volume and 77∼79kg/h, respectively. The maximum cylinder pressure and ignition delay time are investigated 110bar and 8.9degree. Also, The combustion simulation program has been studied to predict whether or not combustion. The results from numerical prediction for the basic, cylinder averaged quantities such as the cylinder pressure and the heat release showed excellent with the experimental data.
