Due to environmental regulations (RoHS, WEEE and ELV) of the European Union, electronics and automotive electronics have to eliminate toxic substance from their devices and system. Especially, reliability issue of lead-free solder joint is increasing in car electronics due to ELV (End-of-Life Vehicle) banning from 2016. We have prepared engine control unit (ECU) modules soldered with Sn-40Pb and Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu (SAC305) solders, respectively. Degradation characteristics of solder joint strength were compared with various conditions of automobile environment such as cabin and engine room. Thermal cycle test (TC, $-40^{\circ}C$ ~ ($85^{\circ}C$ and $125^{\circ}C$), 1500 cycles) were conducted with automotive company standard. To compare shear strength degradation rate with eutectic and Pb-free solder alloy, we measured shear strength of chip components and its size from cabin and engine ECU modules. Based on the TC test results, finally, we have known the difference of degradation level with solder alloys and use environmental conditions. Solder joints degradation rate of engine room ECU is superior to cabin ECU due to large CTE (coefficient of thermal expansion) mismatch in field condition. Degradation rate of engine room ECU is 50~60% larger than cabin room electronics.

In this study, an automatic idle stop control system was developed, which automatically stops the idle state engine as it detects the stop state of the car for several seconds and restarts the stopped engine with the driver's electrical signal. It is composed of microprocessor and the related electronic circuits and communicates with ECU and TCU. With accurate and confirmed operating performance, the control system was equipped in the test car which was proceeded the ECE15+EUDC mode test. It is confirmed that the control system, ASG has much favourable effects on reducing the fuel consumption and harmful exhaust emissions.
The marine diesel engine have been widely applied with a mechanical hydraulic governor to control the ship speed for long time. But it was recently very difficult for the mechanical hydraulic governor to control the speed of engine under the condition of low speed and low load because of jiggling by rough fluctuation of rotating torque and hunting by dead time of diesel engine. In order to analyze the speed control system the transfer function was converted from z to w transformation. The author proposed velocity control system with feedback loop by PID controller in order to stabilize for unstable area. The influence of dead time was discussed by Nichols chart and unit step response curve. It was confirmed through computer simulation that the performance improvement of a mechanical hydraulic governor can be obtained by PID controller.
A gasoline injector rig which can measure cumulative injected fuel mass under a vehicle driving condition was developed. The measurement system consists of an engine control unit (ECU), data acquisition (DAQ) and injected fuel collection system using loadcells. By supplying reconstructed sensor signals which simulate the real vehicle's sensor signals to the ECU, the ECU drives injectors as if they were driven in the vehicle. The vehicle's performance was computer simulated by using $GT-Suite^{(R)}$ software based on both engine part load performance and automatic transmission shift map. Throttle valve position, engine and vehicle speed, air mass flow rate et al. were computer simulated. The used vehicle driving pattern for the simulation was FTP-75 mode. For reconstructing the real vehicle sensor signals which are correspondent to the $GT-Suite^{(R)}$ simulated vehicle's performance, the DAQ systems were used. The injected fuel was collected with mess cylinders. The collected fuel mass in the mess cylinder with elapsed time after starting FTP-75 driving mode was measured using loadcells. The developed method shows highly improved performance in fast timing and accuracy of the cumulative injected fuel mass measurement under the vehicle driven condition.

This paper proposes a marine engine state monitoring system using a DPQ (Distributed Precedence Queue) mechanism which collects the state of bearings, temperature and pressure of engine through the CAN network. The CAN is developed by Bosch Corp. in the early 1980' for automobile network. The data from various sensors attached in the marine engine are converted to digital by the analog to digital converter and formatted to fit the CAN protocol at the CAN module. All the CAN modules are connected to the SPU (Signal Processing Unit) module for the efficient communication and processing. This design reduces the cost for wiring and improves the data transmission reliability by recognizing the sensor errors and data transmission errors. The DPQ mechanism is newly developed for the performance improvement of the marine engine system, which is demonstrated through the experiments.
Series hybrid electric vehicles (SHEVs) having multiple power sources such as an engine- generator (EnGen), a battery, and an ultra-capacitor require a power control unit with high power density and reliable control operation. However, manufacturing using separate individual power converters has the disadvantage of low power density and requires a large number of power and signal cable wires. It is also difficult to implement the optimal power distribution and fault management algorithm because of the communication delay between the units. In order to address these concerns, this approach presents a design methodology and a power control algorithm of an integrated power converter for the SHEVs powered by multiple power sources. In this work, the design methodology of the integrated power control unit (IPCU) is firstly elaborately described, and then efficient and reliable power distribution algorithms are proposed. The design works are verified with product-level and vehicle-level performance experiments on a 10-ton SHEV.

Recently, as the current and future emission regulations go stringent, the research of NOx reduction has become a subject of increasing interest and attention in diesel engine. Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is one of the effective technology to reduce NOx emission from diesel engine. Especially, Urea-SCR that uses urea as a reductant is becoming increasingly popular as a cost effective way of reducing NOx emissions from heavy duty vehicles. In this research, we designed urea injector and DCU (Dosing Control Unit) specially developed for controlling the Urea-SCR process onboard vehicles. As passenger and commercial diesel engine experiment, we grasped characteristics of NOx emission and SCR catalyst temperature level in advance. As a result, highest NOx emission level was shown in condition of low engine speed and high load. On the other hand, SCR catalyst temperature was highest at high engine speed and load. On the basis of these result, we conducted the NOx reduction test at steady engine operating conditions using the urea injector and DCU. It was shown that 74% NOx conversion efficiency on the average and 97% NOx conversion efficiency was obtained at high SCR catalyst temperature.

In CVT vehicle, the engine speed is completely decoupled from the vehicle speed within the range from maximum transmission ratio to minimum transmission ratio. This allows the engine to operate in optimal state(e.g. best fuel economy or maximum power mode.) In this study, the CVT control algorithm for optimal operation of engine is suggested. In order to implement the real time digital control of electro-hydraulic CVT system, a software called CVTCON has been developed. CVTCON also includes the CVT operation module, (2) system test module, (3) system control module and (4) data management module. By using the CVTCON and the electro-hydraulic CVT system, two modes of experiments were carried out: constant throttle opening mode and acceleration mode. From the experimental result, it was found that the algorithm suggested in this study showed optimal operation of the CVT system.

The basic signals for electronic engine control are velocity and degree of the engine cam shaft. The CPS sensor used for this signal and magnetic pick-up type CPS sensor is more popular. It is very important thing analyze this signal correctly. If there are some mistakes at the analysis, like a noise, The engine do not working at the best status, it will generate some noise, emit exhaust fumes and waste more gases. In general way to analysis this signal, you use zero-level detector circuit and in order to reduce the error you must use another sensor like a TDC sensor. In this paper, We proposed the analysis method using electronics circuits for magnetic pick-up type CPS sensor. We designed Comparison level detector circuit, Differential circuit and Full-rectifier circuit for detected the Long tooth and Short tooth level correctly without another sensor. We expected it is useful for more reliable engine control.
