Inspection of Calandria Reactor Surface of Wolsung Nuclear Power Plant using Thermal Infrared Camera mounted on the Mobile Robot KAEROT/m2

  • Thermal infrared imaging is a highly promising technology for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance of electronic, electrical and mechanical elements in nuclear power plants. However, conventional low-cost infrared imaging systems suffer from poor spatial resolution compared to commercial CCD cameras. This paper describes an approach to enhance inspection performances for calandria reactor area of Wolsung nuclear power plant through the technique of superimposing thermal infrared image into real CCD image. In the occurrence of thermal abnormalities on observation points and areas of calandria reactor area, unusual hot image taken from thermal infrared camera is mapped upon real CCD image. The performance of the technique has been evaluated in the experiment carried out at Wolsung nuclear power plant in the overhaul period. The results show that localizations of thermal abnormalities on calandria reactor face can be estimated accurately.

A Study on Analysis of the Social Vulnerable Areas Using GIS Spatial Analysis : Focusing on Local Governments in Seoul Metropolis (GIS 공간분석을 활용한 사회 취약지역의 분석에 관한 연구 : 서울특별시를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to select the sectoral vulnerable areas index in welfare field and analyze the socially vulnerable areas from comprehensive analysis. For this study, preceding research and theoretical background were reviewed. Through this, we selected for the analysis index and criteria, and data corresponding to the index are collected. Based on the index and criteria, the data analysis was performed in Seoul Metropolitan City selected as the spatial extent of this study. From the results of analysis, the sectoral lower rank 10% of social vulnerable areas was determined. In addition, Junggu, Yongsangu, and Seodaemungu from the comprehensive analysis of individual vulnerable areas were derived as a final vulnerable areas. In particular, Junggu was weak in all sectors; Yongsangu was in the medical sector; and Seodaemungu was poor in housing and education. Lower vulnerability index of all sectors (energy, housing, medical, transportation, and education) in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd residential areas by examining use zoning was showed. From the results of this study, we can expect time and labor saving of policy support in public sector.

Child Nutrition Survey in Rural Health Project Areas (농촌보건사업지역(農村保健事業地域)의 아동영양(兒童營養) 실태조사(實態調査))

  • The main purposes of the nutrition and clinical surveys were to provide baseline information on the nutritional status of pre-school children in rural health demonstration project areas of the Korea Health Development Institute (KHDI) for nutrition guidance services for the MCH target group. The survey covered a total of 222 pre-school children and 135 mothers in Okgu Gun, Cholla Pukto Province from August 10 to August 17, 1979. The survey results are summarized as follows: 1) Family Environment Seventy percent of the households had more than three children, and the mean family sire was 6. Sixty-nine percent of the mothers and 47% of the fathers of the surveyed households were educated at or below the primary school level. The majority, 70% of the mothers, were aged between 20 years and 35 years. 2) Anthropometric Measurements and Hemoglobin Value 4.5% of the children were lower than 80% weight for age of the Korean standard, and 5.4% were lower than 85% arm circumference for age of the Jelliffe's standard resectively, and those were suffering from protein-energy malnutrition. Angular stomatitis were observed on 66.2% of the subjects. Mean hemoglobin value was 11.1g/100m1, and 44.2% of the subjects were categorized as anaemia. 3) Food and Nutrient Intake of animal foods was very low, ranging from 2.9 to 17%. Consumption of eggs was less than 2% of total food intake, and intake of legumes was also very scanty, between 0.8 to 3.7%. These data present evidence of very poor protein intake, quality as well as quantity. Energy intake of children was 60.0 to 64.4% of the recommended allowance, and mean protein intake only met 47.4% of the recommendation. Low intake of vitamins except thiamin were also found. 4) Mother's Nutrition Knowledge Eighty-five percent of the mothers were entirely ignorant regarding the 'five basic food group' which is most important fact on food and nutrition guidance. Mean knowledge score from 14 basic questions about food and nutrition was as low as 5.1. There was a significant positive correlation between mother's educational level and nutrition knowledge score. 5) Family Planning Variable There were significant correlation among maternal, family planning variables, and some of the nutritional and physical measurements. The study revealed that the mother's educational level and nutrition knowledge score are more crucial factors than the family planning variables on effecting food intakes on children. Recommendation : According to the results of the surveys, there were high incident rates of nutritional anaemia and angular stomatitis among pre-school children, and most of rural women had very limited knowledge about food and nutrition. As a main part of the health education activities, the community health workers should provide nutrition education to the village mothers to improve the nutrional status of young children in rural areas. Nutrional promotion at the primary health care level should be mainly based on appropriate nutrition education.

  • The nutritional status and chronic disease occurrence of the elderly living in local areas is affected by certain factors, including low energy intakes, low food diversity, poor nutritional quality and living alone. Moreover, elderly people who live alone may have low incomes and be socially isolated. Thus, we have provided them adjustable and balanced menus using standard recipes. In this study, we investigated aspects of nutritional status and living conditions in the elderly status, in relation to food, activities of daily living(ADL), nutrition risk index, average intake of calories and nutrients, the mini dietary assessment index score, depression score, menu satisfaction, menu demand, satisfaction with menu offerings. The result indicated significant nutritional improvements by providing menus to the elders and suggest that by providing adjustable and balanced menus using standard recipes, the nutritional status of isolated elders can be changed and improved.

EMERGY Analysis of Nakdong River Basin for Sustainable Use (낙동가 유역의 지속가능한 이용을 위한 EMERGY 분석)

  • An EMERGY analysis of the main energy flows driving the economy of humans and life support systems consists of environmental energies, fuels, and imports, all expresses as solar emjoules. Total EMERGY use(720.0 E20 sej/yr) of the Nakdong River Basin is 96 per cent from imported sources, fuels and goods and services. EMERGY flows from the environment such as rain and geological uplift flux accounted for only 4 percent of total EMERGY use. Consequently, the ratio of outside investment to attracting natural resources was large, like other industrialized areas. EMERGY use per person in the Nakdong River Basin indicates a moderate EMERGY standard of living, even though the indigenous resources are very poor. Population of 6.66 million people in 1996 is already in excess of carrying capacity of the basin. Carrying capacity for steady state based on its renewable sources in only 0.226 million people. EMERGY yield ratio and environment loading ratio were 1.07 and 28.52, respectively. EMERGY sustainability index, a ratio of EMERGY yield ratio to environment loading ratio, is therefore less than one, which is indicative of highly developed consumer oriented economies. This study suggests that the economic structure of the Nakdong River Basin should be transformed from the present industrial structure to the social-economic structure based on an ecological-recycling concept for the sustainable use of the Nakdong River.

  • This study has measured indoor temperature and relative humidity and evaluated it for one year by selecting Chungnam's rural areas for improving indoor environment of rural housing in the circumstance that the environment of housing is poor due to deterioration of rural housing. As a result of its evaluation, the indoor temperature difference by household appeared to be more than $13^{\circ}C$, and it was measured that the indoor temperature was mostly low. A difference of more than 40% in case of relative humidity occurred, so the difference of the indoor environment by household was clear. In case of the thermal comfort zone, the number of households that are distributed to more than 50% of a thermal comfort criterion in the winter was only 3 households, rather than the summer.

Comparison of Nutritional Status and Immunocompetence of Elderly Women in Urban and Rural Area (거주환경이 다른 두 노인집단의 영양상태 및 면역능 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the nutritional status and the immunocompetence of elderly women residing in urban and rural areas. Dietary food records and anthropometric measurements were used to evaluate the nutritional status of subjects. The immune function of subjects was assessed by total and differential white blood cell(WBC) counts. Total B and T Lymphocytes, and T cell subsets were quantified by flow-cytometer. Immunoglobulin G, A, and M concentrations were also measured as an index of humoral immunity. Elderly women in rural area showed a relatively lower dietary intake of total energy, protein, and iron than did urban elderly women. Total WBC, neutrophil counts, eosinophil counts, and the percentage of neutrophils among total leukocytes were significantly higher in urban elderly women than in rural women. Although the numbers of lymphocytes were not significantly different, the percentage of Lymphocytes among total leukocytes as greater in rural elderly women than in urban. Both groups did not show any significant differences in numbers of T cell subsets and NK cells. Immunoglobulin G, A, and M levels were not significantly different between the two groups, but the numbers of subjects placed under the deficient range of immunoglobulins were greater in rural than in urban elderly women. from the present study, it could be suggested that poor nutritional intake may selectively affect the number of immune cells, thereby influencing the immunocompetence of elderly women. Selecting plant species for landfill revegetation: a test of 10 native species on reclaimed soils

  • Background: Revegetating landfills can be a challenging task as the reclaimed soils are typically dry and have low nutrient content. Therefore, selecting suitable plant species is important for initial revegetation. The issue with current practices (in Korea) is that alien plant species have been typically selected for revegetation projects. In this context, this study selects and tests a set of native plant species for landfill revegetation, accompanied by the assessment of the landfill soils. Results: The soil of the landfill (landfill location) was in a very poor condition with high bulk density and low organic matter and nutrient contents. Among 10 tested species, only Brassica campestris showed high coverage and a sufficient number of individuals in study quadrats sown with seeds. Results suggest that plant species with heavy seeds are the only ones that can adapt to the environment of a typical landfill due to the site's aridity and low nutrient content. The reason is due to such species' superior wind resistance and the capacity to provide sufficient energy for the initial growth of the plants for survival in such landfill environment. Conclusions: This study recommends selecting plant species (1) with arid-adapted features and (2) whose seed weight is sufficiently heavy for survival at landfills or areas with a similar condition for future revegetation.

A Study on Reactivity of Zinc-Based Sorbents (아연계흡수제의 반응특성 규명연구)

  • In this research, effects of the types and amounts of binders and additives on desulfurization and regeneration reactivities of zinc titanate were investigated. Bentonite and kaolinite were used as binders and Mo-based, Ni-based, and Cu-based compounds were used as additives. A thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) was utilized to investigate reactivities of desulfurization and regeneration for each sorbent. Two-cycle reactions of desulfurization-regeneration were performed in the TGA reactor. Results of XRD analysis showed that all sorbents had the crystalline phases of $Zn_2TiO_2$ and $Zn_2Ti_3O_8$ irrespective of the type and amount of binder and additive. Kaolinite-bound sorbents gave higher surface areas than bentonite-bound ones and the surface areas and pore volumes of sorbents increased with amount of binder increased. It was found that the most suitable temperatures for desulfurization and regeneration were 680$^{\circ}$C and 730$^{\circ}$C, respectively, and the sorbent prepared by the addition of 3 mol% CuO showed the best performance in terms of desulfurization and regeneration. Nio-added sorbents had good regenerability whereas $MoO_3-based$ sorbents showed poor performance. In cycle experiments in a fixed bed reactor 3 mol% CuO-added sorbents showed high reactivity.

  • The Purpose of this study was to investigate the eating habits, nutrition and dietary fiber intakes of middle school students from urban areas, Jinju city and rural areas, Hadong and Namhae Gun in Gyeongnam province. Data were collected by using a survey questionnaire. The result of this study are as follows: In the respects of eating habits, the eating habits of girl students ware worse than those of boy students Regardless of region and subjects, the intakes of energy, calcium, iron, riboflavin, dietary fiber were poor. In all the regions the intakes of dietary fiber was far less than $20\~25g$ of daily intakes level. Mental education should also be emphasized to form teenagers' self-identity and the sense of value. Also, the nutritionists of each school should try to focus on the composition of group meals containing fish, vegetables, Kimchi and boiled rice and cereals, not satisfying with the group meals centered on hygiene. Health and nutrition depends on the food people take, teenagers' health is the basis of their future health. The continuous study about teenagers' eating habits and dietary fiber needs to be emphasized.
