  • The purpose of this research is to design an imitation boiler similar to the waste heat boiler installed on a plasma melting furnace in order to acquire a capability of a thermal design as to the circulation of heat and the discharge of noxious gas inside a boiler and to improve the efficiency of a waste heat boiler using the CFD (Computation Fluid Dynamics) program. The position of corrosion and the generation of a clinker inside a boiler due to temperature changes, combustion gas flows, and corrosive gases inside a boiler are examined to design the structure of an efficient boiler and recycle energy. As a result of this research, the boiler installed on a plasma melting furnace met the conditions of design by cooling the combustion gases discharged after the second combustion from an exhaust port, originally at 1,200 degrees Celsius, down to around 450 degrees Celsius. On the other hand, the circulation of corrosive gases (SOx and HCL) may lead to the generation of corrosion or a clinker in the upper and lower parts of an exhaust port more easily than any other parts of a boiler. Accordingly, the corrosion on the inside and outside walls of a boiler may result in a shortened lifespan of a boiler and an inability to recycle waste heat in an efficient manner. A prevention against corrosion at high and low temperatures needs to be considered in detail.

  • In the framework of the Generation IV research and development project, in which the French Commission of Alternative and Atomic Energies (CEA) is involved, a main objective for the design of Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) is to meet the safety goals for severe accidents. Among the severe ones, the Unprotected Transient OverPower (UTOP) accidents can lead very quickly to a global melting of the core. UTOP accidents can be considered either as slow during a Control Rod Withdrawal (CRW) or as fast. The paper focuses on fast UTOP accidents, which occur in a few milliseconds, and three different scenarios are considered: rupture of the core support plate, uncontrolled passage of a gas bubble inside the core and core mechanical distortion such as a core flowering/compaction during an earthquake. Several levels and rates of reactivity insertions are also considered and the thermal-mechanical behavior of an ASTRID fuel pin from the ASTRID CFV core is simulated with the GERMINAL code. Two types of fuel pins are simulated, inner and outer core pins, and three different burn-up are considered. Moreover, the feedback from the CABRI programs on these type of transients is used in order to evaluate the failure mechanism in terms of kinetics of energy injection and fuel melting. The CABRI experiments complete the analysis made with GERMINAL calculations and have shown that three dominant mechanisms can be considered as responsible for pin failure or onset of pin degradation during ULOF/UTOP accident: molten cavity pressure loading, fuel-cladding mechanical interaction (FCMI) and fuel break-up. The study is one of the first step in fast UTOP accidents modelling with GERMINAL and it has shown that the code can already succeed in modelling these type of scenarios up to the sodium boiling point. The modeling of the radial propagation of the melting front, validated by comparison with CABRI tests, is already very efficient.

  • The effects of triangular and rectangular discharge current waveforms on anode erosion in wire electric discharge machining is investigated based on heat transfer analysis of half-space subject to time and space-dependent heat flux. The thermal load on the anode is simulated by a hear flux that is calculated from time-dependent discharge channel radius and energy. Evolution of the melting front during discharge, the molten volume at the experimental result for qualitative verification of the analysis. It is demonstrated that the triangular current waveform is more efficient in eroding the anode than the rectangular one.

  • Multi-step induction heating process was applied to the powder compact melting technique as a new heating process to achieve pinpoint accuracy, faster cycle time, repeatability, non-contact and energy-efficient heat in a minimal amount of time. The objective of this study is the establishment of the input data diagram of multi step induction heating process for automation of the fabrication process of 6061 Al foams with desired density. At first, proper induction coil was designed to obtain a uniform temperature distribution over the entire cross sectional area of specimen. By using this coil, foaming experiments were performed to investigate the multi-step induction heating conditions such as capacity, temperature and time conditions of each heating and holding step. On the basis of the obtained multi-step induction heating conditions, relationship between final heating temperature and fraction of porosity was investigated.

  • $TiO_2$ films were modified by adding a glass frit as a light scattering particle and applied to an anode electrode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to enhance the adhesion between $TiO_2$ and fluorine doped transparent oxide (FTO). Low melting point glass frits at contents of (3 to 7wt%) were added to the nano crystalline $TiO_2$ films. The light scattering properties, photovoltaic properties and microstructures of the photo electrodes were examined to determine the role of the low glass transition temperature ($T_g$) glass frit. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method and scratch test were conducted to support the results. The DSSC with the $TiO_2$ film containing 3wt% low Tg glass frit showed optimal performance (5.1%, energy conversion efficiency) compared to the $TiO_2$-based one. The photocurrent density slightly decreased by adding 3wt% of the frit due to its large size and non conductivity. However, the decrease of current density followed by the decrease of electron transfer due to the large frit in $TiO_2$ electrode was compensated by the scattering effect, high surface area and reduced the electron transfer impedance at the electrolyte-dye-$TiO_2$ interface. The stability of the photo electrodes was improved by the frit, which chemically promoted the sintering of $TiO_2$ at relatively low temperature ($450^{\circ}C$).

  • Laser-doped selective emitter process requires dopant source deposition, spin-on-glass, and is able to form selective emitter through SiNx layer by laser irradiation on desired locations. However, after laser doping process, the remaining dopant layer needs to be washed out. Laser-induced melting of pre-deposited impurity doping is a precise selective doping method minimizing addition of process steps. In this study, we introduce a novel scheme for fabricating highly efficient selective emitter solar cell by laser doping. During this process, laser induced damage induces front contact destabilization due to the hindrance of silver nucleation even though laser doping has a potential of commercialization with simple process concept. When the laser induced damage is effectively removed using solution etch back process, the disadvantage of laser doping was effectively removed. The devices fabricated using laser doping scheme power conversion efficiency was significantly improved about 1% abs. after removal the laser damages.

  • Gas-to-Solid (GTS) technology is composed of three stages: hydrate production, transportation, and regasification. For efficient operation of regasification plants, it is crucial to predict the temperature and flow rate of hot water necessary to dissociate the hydrate pellets. Dissociated gas escaping from the pellet surface, when in contact with hot water, will alter the flow field and consequently alter the heat transfer rate. Methane hydrate pellet dissociation characteristics in low- to moderatetemperature water were investigated by taking images of the changes in the hydrate pellets' shapes in a pressurized reactor and measuring the total time required for complete melting of the pellets. The effects of water temperature, hydrate conversion rate, and flow speed on the dissociation completion time were also investigated. Bubbling gas released from the pellet surface induced a secondary flow that enhanced the heat transfer rate and thus decreased the dissociation time. It was also found that a considerable flow rate was needed to significantly decrease the dissociation time.

  • In laser materials processing, localized heating, melting and evaporation caused by focused laser radiation forms a vapor on the material surface. The plume is generally an unstable entity, fluctuating according to its own dynamics. The beam is refracted and absorbed as it traverses the plume, thus modifying its power density on the surface of the condensed phases. This modifies material evaporation and optical properties of the plume. A laser-produced plasma plume simulation is completed using axisymmetric, high-temperature gas dynamic model including the laser radiation power absorption, refraction, and reflection. The physical properties and velocity profiles are verified using the published experimental and numerical results. The simulation results provide the effect of plasma plume fluctuations on the laser power density and quantitative beam radius changes on the material surface. It is proved that beam absorption, reflection and defocusing effects through the plume are essential to obtain appropriate mathematical simulation results. It is also found that absorption of the beam in the plume has much less direct effect on the beam power density at the material surface than defocusing does and helium gas is more efficient in reducing the beam refraction and absorption effect compared to argon gas for common laser materials processing.

  • In the electric arc furnace process, the chemical energy such as the heat of oxidation reaction and the heat of carbon combustion etc. is consumed as 30% of the total input energy. In order to reduce $CO_2$ emission in EAF, it is necessary to decrease the use of electric power energy during scrap melting stage and increase the use of chemical energy. In general, when the carbon materials is individually charged into the molten steel, the carbon materials floated to the slag layer due to low density before it is dissolved in molten steel. When the concentration of carbon in the molten steel is high, the combustion energy of carbon by oxygen injection can lower the electric power energy and improve the chemical energy consumption. Therefore, an efficient charging methods of carbon material is required to increase the efficiency of carbon combustion heat. On the other hand, Al-dross, which is known as a by-product after Al smelting, includes over 25 mass% of metallic Al, and the oxidation heats of Al is lager than that of carbon. However, the recycling ratio fo Al-dross was very low and is almost landfilled. In order to effectively utilize the heats of oxidation of Al in Al-dross, it is necessary to study the application of Al-dross in the steel process. In this study, the dissolution efficiency of carbon and aluminum in molten steel was investigated by varying the reaction temperature and the mixing ratios of coke and Al-dross.

  • The heat transfer characteristics of ice storage system of falling film type using sprial coil is investigated. The experimental facilities consisted of a water tank, spiral coils located above the tank, an upper water distributor, and a circulating water pump. Water is distributed uniformally over the spiral coils and it forms falling thin films. In the process of freezing, ice is formed on outside of the spiral coils through recirculation of tank water. In the process of melting, ice is melted with return water from the heat load, while the water is chilled again and drops into the tank. The results of falling film type of ice thermal storage system are as follows. The highly efficient shower flowrates for icing is near $3{\ell}/min$. Icing rates on spiral coils is rosed while brine flowrates is increased. Lower brine temperature is not only increased freezing rates but. also become higher total icing weight and overall heat transfer coefficient. Smaller shower flowrates is obtained lower water temperature on outlet for a long time. The amounts of quantity can be detected more accurately by measuring storage tank weight.
