With increasing interests in renewables, more consumers are installing an energy storage system (ESS) in their backyards, and thus, the ESS will play a critical role in the emerging smart grid. Due to mechanical properties, however its operational dynamics must be well understood before connecting the ESS to the smart grid (and eventually to an IT system). To this end, we investigate charging and discharging processes in detail. This paper, then, proposes methods for four type tests (state of charge test, conversion efficiency test, response time test, and ramp rate test) that can assess the dynamics of the ESS. The proposed methods can capture accurate delay values of mechanical processes in the ESS, and it is expected for those values to help design real-time communication systems in the smart grid involving the ESS.
Energy storage systems (ESS) can be used to provide frequency regulation services in a power system to replace traditional frequency regulation power plants. Battery ESS, in particular, can provide "fast-responding frequency regulation," wherein the facility can respond immediately and accurately to the frequency regulation signal sent by the system operator. This paper presents the development and the trial run results of a frequency regulation control system that uses large-scale ESS for use in a large power system. The control system was developed initially for the 4 MW ESS demonstration facility in Jocheon Jeju Island, and was further developed for use in the 28 MW ESS facility at the Seo-Anseong substation and the 24 MW ESS facility at the Shin-Yongin substation to provide frequency regulation services within mainland Korea. The ESS facility in Seo-Anseong substation responds to a sudden drop in frequency via governor-free control, while the ESS facility in Shin-Yongin responds via automatic generator control (AGC).

Several efforts to replace the use of existing fossil energy resources have already been made around the world. As a result, a new industry of renewable energy has been created, and efficient energy distribution and storage has been promoted intensively. Among the newly explored renewable energy sources, the most widely used one is solar energy generation, which has a high market potential. An energy storage system (ESS) is a system as required. In this paper, the design and implementation of an ESS for the efficient use of power in stand-alone street lights is presented. In current ESS applied to stand-alone street lights, either 12V~24V DC (from solar power) or 110V~220V AC (from commercial power) is used to recharge power in systems with lithium batteries. In this study, an ESS that can support both solar power and commercial power was designed and implemented; it can also perform emergency recharge of portable devices from solar powered street lights. This system can maximize the scalability of ESSes using lithium batteries with efficient energy conversion, with the advantage of being an eco-friendly technology. In a ripple effect, it can also be applied to smart grids, electric vehicles, and new, renewable storage markets where energy storage technology is required.
Under the current policies and compensation rules in South Korea, Photovoltaic (PV) generation supplier can maximize the profit by combining PV generation with Energy Storage System (ESS). However, the existing operational strategy of ESS is not able to maximize the profit due to the limitation of ESS capacity. In this paper, new ESS scheduling algorithm is introduced by utilizing the System Marginal Price (SMP) and PV generation forecasting to maximize the profits of PV generation supplier. The proposed algorithm determines the charging time of ESS by ranking the charging schedule from low to high SMP when PV generation is more than enough to charge ESS. The discharging time of ESS is determined by ranking the discharging schedule from high to low SMP when ESS energy is not enough to maintain the discharging. To compensate forecasting error, the algorithm is updated every hour to apply the up-to-date information. The simulation is performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by using actual PV generation and ESS information.
This paper deals with a ride-through technique for permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind turbine systems using energy storage systems (ESS). A control strategy which consists of current and power control loops for the energy storage systems is proposed. By increasing the generator speed, some portion of the turbine power can be stored in the system inertia. Therefore, the required energy capacity of the ESS can be decreased, which results in a low-cost system. In addition, the power fluctuations due to wind speed variations can be smoothened by controlling the ESS appropriately. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified not only by the simulation results for a 2[MW] PMSG wind turbine system, but also by the experiment results for a reduced-scale turbine simulator.
Despite the advantages of energy arbitrage using energy storage systems (ESSs), the high cost of ESSs has not attracted storage owners for the arbitrage. However, as the costs of ESS have decreased and the price volatility of the electricity market has increased, many studies have been conducted on energy arbitrage using ESSs. In this study, the existing two-period model is modified in consideration of the ESS cost and risk-free contracts. Optimal investment strategies that maximize the sum of external effects caused by price changes and arbitrage profits are formulated by market participants. The optimal amounts of ESS investment for three types of investors in three different market structures are determined with game theory, and strategies in the form of the mixed-complementarity problem are solved by using the PATH solver of GAMS. Results show that when all market participants can participate in investment simultaneously, only customers invest in ESSs, which means that customers can obtain market power by operating their ESSs. Attracting other types of ESS investors, such as merchant storage owners and producers, to mitigate market power can be achieved by increasing risk-free contracts.

Increasing peak load is one of the major concerns about operation of urban railroad systems. Since ESSs (Energy Storage Systems) have a great potential for shaving the peak load, there has been a growing interest in the use of ESS for peak load reduction. Also, ESS can be optimally scheduled to minimize the electricity purchasing cost under a given ToU (Time-of-Use) tariff by taking advantage of electricity price difference between peak and off-peak time. This paper presents a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP)-based ESS scheduling method to minimize the electricity purchasing cost under a ToU tariff for an urban railroad system.
In this study, we propose an operations model to automate a home energy management system (HEMS) that utilizes an energy storage system (ESS) in consideration of consumer utility. Most previous studies focused on the system for the profits obtained from trading charged energy using large-scale ESS. By contrast, the present study focuses on constructing a home-level energy management system that considers consumer's utility over energy consumption. Depending on personal preference, some residential consumers may prefer consuming additional energy to earn increased profits through price arbitrage and vice versa. However, the current system could not yet reflect on this aspect. Thus, we develop an operations model for HEMS that could automatically control energy consumption while considering the level of consumer's preference and the economic benefits of using an ESS. The results of simulations using a dataset of the Korean market show that an operations policy of charging and discharging can be changed depending on consumer's utility. The impact of this policy is not ignorable. Moreover, the technical specifications of ESS, such as self-discharge rate and round-trip efficiency, can affect the operations policy and automation of HEMS.

Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydro provides utilizing renewable power and reduce the using fossil fuels. On the other hand, it is too critical to apply power system due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, the continuous fluctuations of the power load, and the storage with high energy density. Energy storage system, including pumped-hydroelectric energy storage, compressed-air energy storage, superconducting magnetic energy storage, and electrochemical devices like batteries, supercapacitors and others have shown that solve some of the challenges. In this paper, we review the current state of applications of energy storage systems, and atomic layer deposition technology, graphene materials on the energy storage systems and processes.

Operation modes and control strategies for single-phase mobility charging station utilizing photovoltaic (PV) generation and energy storage systems (ESS) are proposed. This approach generates electric power from PV to transmit the mobility, ESS, and then transfer it to the grid when surplus electric power is generated during daytime. However, the PV power cannot be generated during night-time, and ESS and the mobility system can be charged using grid power. The power balance control based on power fluctuations and the resonant current control that can compensate harmonic components have been added to increase the stability of the system. The MATLAB/Simulink simulation was carried out to verify the proposed control method, and the 2-kW single-phase grid-tied PV-ESS smart mobility charger was built and tested.
