Demonstration to Operate and Control Frequency Regulation of Power System by 4MW Energy Storage System (4MW 에너지저장장치의 전력계통 주파수 조정 운전제어를 위한 실증)

  • Operation and control system has been installed and tested to use energy storage system(ESS) for frequency regulation at 4MW class of ESS demonstration facility installed at Jeju island, Korea in 2013. Simulation tests were performed by programing language C# for power system of Jeju island to develop control algorithm. Site simulation tests were performed in control system itself without connecting power system and energy storage system. Control algorithm was coded, modified and tested to load to controller and communication system and human-machine interface were developed and tested in the process of simulation tests. After similar results to that of simulation tests by programing language were obtained, power system and energy storage system demonstration facility were connected to control system by communication system. Energy storage system for frequency regulation was tested for actual frequency and simulation frequency. The site tests showed the similar results to that of simulation tests and the control systems is possible to be operated for frequency regulation. Faster response of energy storage system for frequency regulation, less costs and less capacity of energy storage systems which cover for frequency regulation of power plants. It is expected that more studies for time-reduction and time-delay elements can make less capacity of energy storage system cover more role of frequency regulation of power plants.

  • This paper proposes a new control technique of energy storage system (ESS) for smoothing the active power of renewable energy sources (RES) such as photovoltaic and wind turbine generation. As the penetration of RES into grid increases, it is difficult to maintain the permissible level of power quality, that is, voltage and frequency fluctuation in power systems. To solve this problem, ESS control methods using low pass filter (LPF) have been proposed for mitigating the fluctuation of RES output. However, those have a lot of drawbacks which need to be supplemented. Hence, this paper presents the improved active power control with additional reactive power control for maintaining power quality properly. The proposed method minimizes the capacity of ESS to be required for smoothing RES output fluctuation through mitigation of phase delay problem in LPF. In addition, the voltage regulation improves by using additional reactive power control. The proposed method was verified through simulation analysis using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • Regenerative Energy Storage System(ESS) is a system that saves regenerative energy which generated instantly in the regenerative braking of Electric Multiple Unit(EMU) and disappear, and reuse the stored energy when EMU is in powering. Such system related to a research field of renewable energy which emerged concerning climate change and high oil prices. In the case of existing domestic rolling stock, about 25% to 30% of generated regenerative energy is restored to power source and is regarded as direct factor of raising catenary voltage. Such rapid change of catenary voltage is a cause of the failure of EMU's electronic equipment and lowering its reliability and is also a cause of train's fault occurred by tripping circuit breaker. In this paper, we intend to investigate the effect on blending characteristics of electric-braking and pneumatic-braking whether the regenerative energy storage system is used or not in urban transit DC 1,500V feeding system, while trains run. And we also intend to investigate its effect on stabilization of the blending, fluctuation of catenary voltage and various electric equipments.

  • Recently, distributed generation using renewable energy resources have increased due to the limitation of conventional energy. To utilize these energy source effectively, a method of applying the energy storage system(ESS) in distribution system has been considered. In this paper, we simulated the one line-to-ground fault in power system with ESS. Based on these simulations, we analyzed the effect on Over Current Relay(OCR) operation. As a result, ESS operation modes result fault current fluctuation. Thus, OCR need to reset the pick up current. This paper analyze effect of ESS in distribution system according to OCR setting by using ElectroMagnetic Transient Program(EMTP).

  • In the rapidly growing new and renewable ESS parts and materials market, there is a limit for domestic SMEs to cope with the rapidly changing global new and renewable ESS market. There is a growing need to build a new and renewable ESS convergence commercialization support center. Therefore, through the establishment of a new and renewable ESS convergence professional evaluation center base, performance evaluation and standardization of new and renewable ESS products enhance product reliability. And By securing the reliability of new and renewable ESS, it is possible to promote domestic supply business and export activation. In addition, by supporting domestic research institutes and manufacturers to enhance their development capabilities and strengthen their competitiveness, and shortening the test cost and testing period according to the total-test evaluation system, it is possible anti-spill effect can be expected. Therefore, in this paper, we intend to study the establishment of a test certification center beyond the level of developed countries that can establish standardization for performance evaluation and demonstration.

  • 본 논문에서는 10kW급 리튬계열 에너지 저장장치 (ESS;Energy storage system)의 전기화학적 온도특성을 분석하였다. 70개 $LiFePO_4$ 단위 셀의 직렬결합(70S1P)으로 이루어진 ESS의 온도특성 분석을 위해 여름(7월)과 겨울(1월)일때의 ESS Tray/Rack/Cell 전압(표준편차) 및 온도데이터(최대값/최소값)의 통계처리를 실시하였다. 실험결과를 통해, 주변 외기온도에 영향을 최소화한 안정적인 ESS의 최적구축을 위한 가이드 라인을 제시할 수 있다.

  • 최근 공공건물, 중대형 건물 등에서 전력 피크 시간대에 또는 안정적인 전력공급을 위해 사용할 에너지를 저장하는 방법으로 ESS 를 채택하고 있다. 그러나 대부분의 ESS 의 상태를 모니터링하기 위해서는 별도의 PC 에 소프트웨어를 설치하거나, EMS(Energy Management System)와 같은 별도의 솔루션의 한 기능으로 확인할 수 있다. 이럴 경우, 소프트웨어가 설치되어 있지 않은 현장에서 확인이 어렵고, 자연방전이 일어난 경우 과방전의 가능성도 배제할 수 없다. 따라서 ESS 의 랙 내부에 LCD 화면을 탑재하여 ESS 독립적으로도 상태를 확인할 수 있도록 모니터링 시스템을 개발하였다. 본 연구의 ESS 모니터링 시스템은 ESS 의 안전성올 높이고, 보다 직관적으로 ESS 의 상태를 확인할 수 있도록 구현 하였다.

  • The wind power generators installed in the Jeju area have already exceeded the supply in the Jeju area and are being thrown away. Accordingly, the government is conducting research on installing a 2MWh-class ESS(energy storage system) through a technology development project to charge wasted power and use it in an electric vehicle charging station. In this paper, in order to stably install a 2MWh class ESS, the electric vehicle charging model and ESS discharge model were modeled and simulated using Matlab Simulink. Through simulation, it was verified that the 2MWh class ESS operates stably in various scenarios.

  • Recently, the use of ESS facilities has been increased under the government's energy policy and at the same time, the various accident incidents such as fire and explosion occurred. Currently the ESS is installed as integrated ESS which includes PMS(: Power Management System), However, when the accident occurs, this system has high possibilities of losing the data due to oxidization, and the administrator cannot respond promptly. Therefore, in this paper, by constructing a separate WAS and data storage, it is possible to separate the main functions of the conventional system, to enable external EMS operation, and at the same time to quickly respond to the cause and cause of the accident occurrence. We will propose the development of a standalone PMS that is possible to respond.

  • Wind power forecast is critical for efficient power system operation. However, wind power has high forecasting errors due to uncertainty caused by the climate change. These forecasting errors can have an adverse impact on the power system operation. In order to mitigate the issues caused by the wind power forecasting error, wind power curtailment and energy storage system (ESS) can be introduced in the power system. These methods can affect the economics of wind power resources. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the economics of the methods for mitigating the wind power forecasting error. This paper attempts to analyze the economics of wind power curtailment and ESS operation for mitigating wind power forecasting error. Numerical simulation results are presented to show the economic impact of wind power curtailment and ESS operation.
