Korean traditional Ondol with the sensible heat storage medium has been for a long time used as residential heating system, in these days the concrete Ondol without the heat storage medium was realized as the heating system in the private houses and the apartments. This floor heating system is good for our health. But the concrete Ondol is not desirable for the energy saving and for the maintenance of comfortable room temperature because the heat storage medium is not employed in the concrete Ondol. And as the hot water circulating pipes ate buried under the the concrete floor, the concrete Ondol system has some kind of problems to be improved. Therefore the new type of Ondol system was developed in this study. And the new Ondol was consisted of latent heat storage material as heat storage medium with a great heat capacity and bioceramics as medium to maintain comfortable room temperature. In this study, the heat transfer characteristics of latent heat storage-bioceramic Ondol was analyzed theoretically.
Recently a few MJ superconducting magnetic energy storage ($\mu$ SMES) devices become commerci-ally available as one of the energy storage devices for uniterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. For such a ($\mu$ SMES) devics, a few kA class superconducting cables with high current density, high stability and excellent pulse characteristics are required. To acquire data for the superconduction cables related to design and fabrication of a 0.7 MJ $\mu$ SMES device, we tested critical currents and quench characteristics for several winding tensions and various remping rates especially. It is shown from the results that winding tensions have much influence on quench currents of the $\mu$ SMES devices.
In the research fields of energy storage, and more specifically of supplying high powers, electrochemical supercapacitor have been among the most studied systems for many years. One of the possible applications is in electric vehicles. We have been working on electronically conducting polymers for use as active materials for electrodes in supercapacitors. These polymers have the ability of doping and undoping with rather fast kinetics and have an excellent capacity for energy storage. polythiophene (Pth) and polyparafluorophenylthiophene (PFPT) have been chemically synthesized for use as active materials in supercapacitor electrodes. Electrochemical characterization has been performed by cyclic voltammetry and an electrode study has been achieved to get the maximun capacity out of the polymers and give good cyclability. specific capacity values of 7mAh/g and 40mAh/g were obtained for PFPT and polythiophene, respectively. Supercapacitors have been built to characterize this type of system. Energy storage levels of 260F/g were obtained with Pth and 110F/g with PFPT
The exergy analysis on the heat storage performance of the senible heat storage unit which consists of the heat storage material in the concentric annulus and the hot fluid flowing through the inner tube is performed. Heat transfer characteristics which are necessary for the performance of the exergy analysis is obtained from the energy balance equations and the second law of thermodynamics. As the index of heat storage performance, the exergy lossnumber $N_{s}$, and exergy storage ratio from the concepts of the second law of thermodynamics are defined. Results are ovtained for the grometry of the storage unit, the Biot number Bi, ambient temperature $T_{o}$ as parameters. From these results the exergy storage ratio can be considered as the efficiency of the hat storage unit and is introduced as a guide to design.
Dielectric ceramic capacitors present high output power density due to the fast energy charge and discharge nature of dielectric polarization. By forming dense ceramic films with nano-grains through the Aerosol Deposition (AD) process, dielectric ceramic capacitors can have high dielectric breakdown strength, high energy storage density, and leading to high power density. Dielectric capacitors fabricated by AD process are expected to meet the increasing demand in applications that require not only high energy density but also high power output in a short time. This article reviews the recent progress on the dielectric ceramic capacitors with improved energy storage properties through AD process, including energy storage capacitors based on both leadbased and lead-free dielectric ceramics.
For the last decades, a research hotspot for the halide perovskites (HPs) is now showing great progress in terms of improving efficiency for numerous photovoltaic devices (PVDs). However, it still faces challenges in the case of long-term stability in the air atmosphere. Defect-free high-quality HP single crystals show their promising properties for the remarkable development of highly efficient and stable PVDs. Here, we summarize the growth processing routes for the stable HP single crystals as well as briefly discuss the pros and cons of those well-established synthesis routes. Furthermore, we briefly include the comparison note between the HP single crystals and polycrystalline perovskite films regarding their device applications. Based on the future progress, the review concludes subjective perspectives and current challenges for the development of HPs high-quality PVDs.
Magnetic properties of 3d transition metals were determined by exchange interaction between magnetic ions that was characterized by the exchange integral. Bulk Mn material is one of transition metals that have been well known as an anti-ferromagnetic material due to an anti-parallel spin with negative exchange integral. Here we report on the MBE growth of Mn on $BaTiO_3$ (001) substrate and induced ferromagnetism. The bcc ${\alpha}$-Mn single crystal film has been grown on $BaTiO_3$ (100) substrate. The XRD and Raman results indicated that the structural phase transitions of $BaTiO_3$ substrate induced a lattice distortion at the interface. Consequently, the grown Mn film exhibits ferromagnetism with strong saturation magnetization of 495 emu/$cm^3$ at 320 K. The electrical resistivity of the Mn film strongly depended on the crystal structure of $BaTiO_3$ substrate.
With rapid industrialization and population growth, fossil fuel use has increased, which has a significant impact on the environment. Hydrogen does not cause contamination in the energy production process, so it seems to be a solution, but it is essential to find an appropriate storage method due to its low efficiency. In this study, Mg-based alloys capable of ensuring safety and high volume and hydrogen storage density per weight was studied, and Mg2NiHx synthesized with Ni capable of improving hydrogenation kinetics. In addition, in order to improve thermal stability, a hydrogen storage composite material synthesized with CaO was synthesized to analyze the change in hydrogenation reaction. In order to analyze the changes in the metallurgical properties of the materials through the process, XRD, SEM, BET, etc. were conducted, and hydrogenation behavior was confirmed by TGA and hydrogenation kinetics analysis. In addition, in order to evaluate the impact of the process on the environment, the environmental impact was evaluated through "Material Life Cycle Assessments" based on CML 2001 and EI99' methodologies, and compared and analyzed with previous studies. As a result, the synthesis of CaO caused additional power consumption, which had a significant impact on global warming, and further research is required to improve this.
Viscoelastic characteristics of agricultural products may be determined through three basic tests ; stress relaxation, creep, and dynamic test. Considering the changeability of living materials, dynamic test in which information is derived in a relatively short time appears to be highly desirable, in which either cyclic stress or cyclic strain is imposed and the remaining quantity (strain or stress) is measured. The periodically varying stress will also result in periodically varying strain which in a viscoelastic material should theoretically be out of phase with the stress, because part of the energy subjected to sample is stored in the material as potential energy and part is dissipated as heat. This behavior results in a complex frequency-dependent compliance denoted by J($i{\omega}$). The complex compliance and therefore the storage compliance, the loss compliance, the phase angle, and percent energy loss for the sample should be obtainable with a given static viscoelastic property of the material under static load. The complex compliance of the rough rice kernel were computed from the Burger's model describing creep behavior of the material which were obtained in the previous study. Also, the effects of cyclic load and moisture content of grain on the dynamic viscoelastic behavior of the samples were analyized. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows ; 1. The storage compliance of the rough rice kernel slightly decreased with the frequency applied but at above the frequency of 0.1 Hz it was nearly constant with the frequency, and the loss compliance of the sample very rapidly decreased with increase in the frequency on those frequency ranges. 2. It was shown that the storage compliance and the loss compliance of the sample increased with increase in grain moisture content. Effect of grain moisture content on the storage compliance of the sample was highly significant than effect of the frequency applied, but effect of the frequency on the loss compliance of the sample was more significant than effect of grain moisture content. 3. In low moisture content, the percent energy loss of Japonica-type rough rice was much higher than that of Indica-type rough rice, but, in high moisture content, vice versa.
A FeRh alloy is a well-known efficient magnetocaloric material and some experimental and theoretical studies of bulk FeRh have been reported already by several groups. In this study we report first-principles calculations on magnetic properties of different thickness FeRh thin films in order to investigate the possibility to enhance further the magnetocaloric efficiency. We used Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP) code. We found that the FeRh thin films have quite different magnetic properties from the bulk when the thickness is thinner than 6-atomic-layers. While bulk FeRh has a G-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, thin films which are thinner than 6-atomic-layers have an A-type AFM state or a ferromagnetic(FM) state. We will discuss possibility of magnetic phase transitions of the FeRh thin films in the view point of a magnetocaloric effect. And we found 4-, 5-, 6-layers films with Fe surface and 7-layers film with Rh surface are FM and they have dozens eV magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) energy. MCA energy leads to determine energy barrier when magnetic states are changed by external magnetic field.
