Control of Methane Emission in Ruminants and Industrial Application of Biogas from Livestock Manure in Korea

  • Methane is known to be one of the major greenhouse gases. On a global scale, livestock farming may contribute 18% of total greenhouse gas emissions. Though methane contribution is less than 2% of all the factors leading to global warming, it plays an important role because it is 21 times more effective than carbon dioxide. Methane emission is a direct result of the fermentation process performed by ruminal microorganisms and, in particular, the archael methanogens. Reducing methane emission would benefit both ruminant production and the environment. Methane generation can be reduced by electron-sink metabolic pathways to dispose of the reducing moieties. An alternative way for methane control in the rumen is to apply inhibitors against methanogens. Generating methane from manure has considerable merit because it appears to offer at least a partial solution to two pressing problems-environmental crisis and energy shortage. An obvious benefit from methane production is the energy value of the gas itself. Control of methane emission by rumen microbes in Korea has mainly been focused on application of various chemicals, such as BES and PMDI, that inhibit the growth and activity of methanogens in the rumen. Alternatives were to apply long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and oils with or without organic acids (malate and fumarate). The results for trials with methane reducing agents and the situation of biogas production industries and a typical biogas plant in Korea will be introduced here.

An Application of the Genetic Algorithm for the Input Shaper on the High Order System (입력 성형기의 고차 시스템 적용을 위한 GA활용)

  • Recently, industrial systems are becoming quicker and lighter to enable the reduction of energy consumption and increase productivity. So the latest systems are more flexible and rapid than the previous systems. But, with this improvement, another problem has emerged, such as the increase in residual vibration when a system is started or stopped. The input shaper is a command generation method that can remove residual vibration. It can provide a solution to the problem of residual vibration in industrial systems. However, it is difficult to generate the input shaper in high order systems, such as a typical industrial system because the input shaper is induced from the system's vibration characteristics. This study focused on the extra insensitivity shaper that can compensate for the system's modeling error such as input dynamics, and the high order's system affection. A genetic algorithm was deployed to adjust a vibration limitation for the extra insensitivity of the input shaper. A plant is a low damping system that includes one zero and a pole. The fitness functions are an error signal of the system's response with normalized frequency variations. Verification of the suggested system is satisfied by comparison between the zero vibration derivative input shaper's response and the suggested one.

Feasibility of a Solar Thermal Organic Rankine Cycle Power Plant for an Apartment Complex with Aspen Plus® (ASPEN PLUS®를 이용한 태양열 유기랭킨사이클 열병합 발전시스템의 공동주택 적합도 분석)

  • In this study, a solar thermal system is designed to provide hot water and electricity for improvement of solar thermal energy availability in an apartment complex. The electricity is generated with Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) by the solar thermal energy. R134a, R141b and R245fa are selected for operating fluid of the solar thermal ORC system. ORC with R245fa shows the best performance based on the variation of pressure. The irreversibility of component showed that the technology advance of the evaporator ensures a performance improvement. The sensitivity study results indicate that the turbine performance is most effective way to improve the performance of ORC system. An economic analysis showed that approximately 50% more income could be achieved by a solar thermal ORC system with a hot water supply.

  • Following the advanced fuel cycle initiative (AFCI) promotions in the United States, the analytic proposition for global fuel cycle initiative (GFCI) has been investigated using dynamical simulations. The political and economic aspects are considered simultaneously due to the particular characteristics of the nuclear materials. The spent nuclear fuels (SNFs) are treated as the reprocessing by the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) exemption nations and the NPT excluded nations. Otherwise, the pyroprocessing and repository can be done without NPT restriction. In addition, the international trade is considered as the economic aspect where the energy production is a key issue of the GFCI. The dynamical simulations have been done until 2050. The result of the International Trade shows the gradually increasing shape. Additionally, the Nuclear Power Plant Operation shows the increasing by stepwise shape.

  • Tension tests of six half-thickness concrete containment wall elements were conducted as a part of Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) program. The aim of the KAERI test program is to provide a test-verified analytical method for estimating capacities of concrete reactor containment buildings under internal overpressurization from postulated degraded core accidents. The data from the tests reported herein should be useful for benchmarking analytical method that require modeling of material behavior including concrete cracking behavior and reinforcement/concrete interaction exhibited by the test. Major test variable is compressive strength of concrete, and its effect on the behavior of prestressed concrete panel subjected to biaxial tension is investigated.

  • A new control design methodology is presented here which is based on a nonlinear time-series reference model. It is indicated by highly nonlinear simulations that such designs successfully stabilize troublesome aircraft maneuvers undergoing large changes in angle of attack as well as large electric power transients due to line faults. In both applications, the nonlinear controller was significantly better than the corresponding linear adaptive controller. For the electric power network, a flexible a.c. transmission system (FACTS) with series capacitor power feedback control is studied. A bilinear auto-regressive moving average (BARMA) reference model is identified from system data and the feedback control manipulated according to a desired reference state. The control is optimized according to a predictive one-step quadratic performance index (J). A similar algorithm is derived for control of rapid changes in aircraft angle of attack over a normally unstable flight regime. In the latter case, however, a generalization of a bilinear time-series model reference includes quadratic and cubic terms in angle of attack. These applications are typical of the numerous plants for which nonlinear adaptive control has the potential to provide significant performance improvements. For aircraft control, significant maneuverability gains can provide safer transportation under large windshear disturbances as well as tactical advantages. For FACTS, there is the potential for significant increase in admissible electric power transmission over available transmission lines along with energy conservation. Electric power systems are inherently nonlinear for significant transient variations from synchronism such as may result for large fault disturbances. In such cases, traditional linear controllers may not stabilize the swing (in rotor angle) without inefficient energy wasting strategies to shed loads, etc. Fortunately, the advent of power electronics (e.g., high-speed thyristors) admits the possibility of adaptive control by means of FACTS. Line admittance manipulation seems to be an effective means to achieve stabilization and high efficiency for such FACTS. This results in parametric (or multiplicative) control of a highly nonlinear plant.

Studies on the Phosphatic fertilizer Application Grassland I. Effect of phosphatic fertilizer at the establishment and management of grassland on the yield and energy value of grasses (초지에 대한 인산질비료의 시용에 관한 연구 I. 초지조성 및 관리시에 인산질비료의 시용이 목초의 수량 및 에너지축적에 미치는 영향)

  • With a purpose of finding out the effects of phosphatic fertilizer application at the grassland establishment and management on the dry matter yield and quality of grasses, a field experiment was arranged with four treatments as a randomized complcte block design and lasted from September, 19 89 to October, 1991 in hilly area near Suwon. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. As a early plant growth. winter hardiness. growth vigour and coverage of grasses of the plots with phosphatic fertilizer were better than those of the plots without $P_2O_5$. and the effect of application at the management was much better than that at the establishment of grassland. 2. The effect of phosphatic fertilizer on DM yield of legume was higher than of grass. Total DM yield with phosphatic fertilizer at the only establishment (5.688 kg/ha). at the only management (8.014 kg/ha) and at both the establishment and management of grassland (1 1,082 kg/ha) was much more increased by 38, 95 and 169% than that without phosphatic fertilizer (4.1 19 kg/ha), respectively. 3. The chemical component of crude protein and crude fat with phosphatic fertilizer was a little higher, on the other hand, content of NFE was lower than that without $P_2O_5$ fertilization, but the contents of crude fiber and crude ash did not tend to differentiate between treatments. 4. Production of encrgy(TDN, StE and NEL) with phosphatic fertilization at the establishment and the management of grassland was appeared to increase by 34 to 390h and 72 to 99% than that without $P_2O_5$, respectively. Production of curde protein with $P_2O_5$ tended to be similar to production of energy.

Some Physical Oceanographic Survey in the Sea Off Kori (고리해역에 있어서의 표류병 및 염료확산시험)

  • The forth dye diffusion experiment, which was authorized by the Office of Atomic Energy, and some physical aspect of oceanographic observations were carried out in the sea off Kori in September 29-October 1, 1971. In a series of drift bottle experiments the 337 bottles were released. And bottom topography by echo soundings in the survey was well approached to the chart No. 433, Kori and Approaches, published by Hydrographic Office in October 1970. Results deduced from this survey were as follows: 1. A small ridge extends from Kori-Mal tip in southwestward over 1300 meters, and eastside of which is plain and a little sloping while westside of which cliffy and very steeper sloping. 2. A gyre was formed in the waters from Kori-Mal to Mat-dum in cum sole definitely at flood tide and in contra solem less definitely at ebb tide. And that the gyre rose and decayed with the turn of the tide. 3. Diffusion coefficients of 2.5% Rhodamine B solution of 200 liters were 9. 3 ${\times}{10^2}$ c$m^2$/sec in the waters Kori-Mal to Mat-dum and 28.6${\times}{10^2}$ c$m^2$/sec in the waters eastside of Mat-dum at the time after 26 minutes from releasing of the dye solution. 4. According to the above results the eastside of Mat-dum is rather recommendable to settle as the point for the outlet of drainage or waste of atomic power plant to be constructed.

Fast Neutron Flux Determination by Using Ex-vessel Dosimetry (노외 감시자를 이용한 압력용기 중성자 조사량 결정)

  • It is required that the neutron dosimetry be present to monitor the reactor vessel throughout its plant life. The Ex-vessel Neutron Dosimetry Systems which consist of sensor sets, radiometric monitors, gradient chains, and support hardware have been installed for 3-Loop plants after a complete withdrawal of all six in-vessel surveillance capsules. The systems have been installed in the reactor cavity annulus in order to characterize the neutron energy spectrum over the beltline region of the reactor vessel. The installed dosimetry were withdrawn and evaluated after a irradiation during one cycle and then compared to the cycle specific neutron transport calculations. The reaction rates from the measurement and calculation were compared and the results show good agreements each other.

The Syntheses of Mn(III) Porphyrin Derivatives and Its Photoreactivity (Mn(III)-porphyrin 유도체의 합성과 그 광반응성)

  • We are interested in studying the artificial photolysis of water which mimics the natural plant photosynthesis. In the artificial system there should be a proper photosensitizer, electron donor and electron acceptor. Since Mn-tetramer is known to be the essential part for the oxygten-evolving system in the natural photosynthesis, it is important to know or study the reactivity of Mn-porphyrins. As a model for the Mn-tetramer in the natural photosynthesis, we prepared the lipophilic and hydrophilic Mn-porphyrins. For the lipophilic porphyrin with long hydrocarbon chain, the long hydrocarbon chain was inserted in the porphyrin ring formation step. For the hydrophilic porphyrin, the porphyrin was sulfonated with sulfuric acid. These syntheses of lipophilic and hydrophilic Mn-porphyrins are significant, since the behaviors of these compounds will be different in the microemulsions or vesicles. We also found that the Mn-porphyrins were photoreduced in the microemulsion and water in the presence of amines.
