  • Since security plays an important role in several ZigBee applications, such as Smart Energy and medical sensor applications, ZigBee Specification includes various security mechanisms to protect ZigBee frames and infrastructure. Among them, the Join and Leave operations of ZigBee are investigated in this paper. The current Join-Leave operation is protected by the network key (a kind of group key). We claim it is not adequate to employ the network key for such purpose, and propose a new Join-Leave operation protected by the application link key (a kind of pairwise key), which is based on a more efficient key management scheme than that of ZigBee. Hence, the original Join operation consists of a total of 12 command frames, while the new Join operation consists of only 6 command frames. In particular, the security of the proposed Join-Leave operation is equivalent to or better than that of the original Join-Leave operation. The new Join-Leave operation is extensively analyzed in terms of security and efficiency, and compared with the original Join-Leave operation of ZigBee.

Nowadays building energy management to save HVAC energy and so on is the most critical issue for existing building service branch with high efficiency equipments and their optimal operation. The effects on the building energy savings of the building equipment retrofit and the improvement of its operation method, especially in the field of HVAC system, were analyzed in this study for domestic small and/or medium sized buildings. Over 8.8% of energy saving was achieved compared withe total energy consumption in commercial building. These results could be used for reasonable maintenance and efficient management of the various building service equipments and related systems.

  • This paper introduces facility operation modeling and simulation based primarily on a discrete event system modeling scheme. Many modern industrial facilities are so complex that their operational status cannot be estimated by simple calculations. In general, a facility can consist of many processes and transfers of material between processes that may be modeled as a discrete event system. This paper introduces the current status of studies on operation modeling and simulation for typical nuclear facilities, along with some examples. In addition, this paper provides insights about how a discrete event system can be applied to a model for a nuclear facility. A headend facility is chosen for operation modeling and the simulation, and detailed procedure is thoroughly described from modeling to an analysis of discrete event results. These kinds of modeling and simulation are very important because they can contribute to facility design and operation in terms of prediction of system behavior, quantification of facility capacity, bottleneck identification and efficient operation scheduling.

  • The research on optimization of cellular network's energy efficiency (EE) towards environmental and economic sustainability has attracted increasing attention recently. In this survey, we discuss the opportunities, trends and challenges of this challenging topic. Two major contributions are presented namely 1) survey of proposed energy efficiency metrics; 2) survey of proposed energy efficient solutions. We provide a broad overview of the state of-the-art energy efficient methods covering base station (BS) hardware design, network planning and deployment, and network management and operation stages. In order to further understand how EE is assessed and improved through the heterogeneous network (HetNet), BS's energy-awareness and several typical HetNet deployment scenarios such as macrocell-microcell and macrocell-picocell are presented. The analysis of different HetNet deployment scenarios gives insights towards a successful deployment of energy efficient cellular networks.

  • In recent years, energy prices have soared, which of course have increased costs for railway operators. Simultaneously, the energy market has considerably changed that in most developed countries, it is deregulated, giving railway operators an opportunity to define new ways of using energy. Efficient operation of the railway system is considered as an essential way to energy saving while an efficient management of power level helps to lower the reference subscribed power, giving access to better energy rates. It is studied on the relation between time and force for the energy efficient driving of train in railway when the train is braking according to several slips.

  • For the efficient operation of sensor networks, it is very important to design sensor networks for sensors to utilize their energies in very effective ways. Cluster-based routing schemes such as LEACH can achieve their energy efficiencies by delivering data between cluster heads and sensor nodes. In those cluster-based schemes, cluster reconfiguration algorithm is one of the most critical issues to achieve longer operation lifetime of sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a new energy efficient cluster reconfiguration algorithm. Proposed method does not require any location or energy information of sensors, and can configure clusters with fair cluster regions such that all the sensors in a sensor network can utilize their energies equally. The performances of the proposed scheme have been compared with LEACH and LEACH-C.

  • This paper presents an application of optimization method for efficient operation in micro grid. For operational efficiency, the objective function in a diesel generator consists of the fuel cost function similar to the cost functions used for the conventional fossil-fuel generating plants. The wind turbine generator is modeled by the characteristics of variable output. The cost function of fuel cell plant considers the efficiency of fuel cell. Particle swarm optimization(PSO) and sequential quadratic programming(SQP) are used for solving the problem of microgrid system operation. Also, from the results this paper presents the way to attend power markets which can buy and sell power from upper lever grids by connecting a various generation resources to micro grid.

  • It is well known that the biggest problem of wireless sensor networks is power conservation. There have been two major approaches to efficiently use energy in wireless sensor networks. One is to use a dynamic power management scheme and the other is to use energy efficient protocols. In the former, the power manager is responsible for managing the proper power state of CPU and each I/O with respect to the events, but the power manager does not concern about the internal operation of the underlying network protocols. Thus such conventional power managers can waste unpredicted power during communication period. On the other hand, the energy efficient protocols are just focused on the power saving operation of the radio PHY. In this paper, we introduce an energy-efficient power saving mechanism that can significantly reduce unwanted power consumption of wireless sensor nodes through the communication event-driven power management. We show that our scheme improves the energy conservation in the entire network through simulations.
