  • Competitive indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (Ci-ELISA) was used to obtain the preliminary data for the detection of irradiated beef. Ci-ELISA was individually formatted with polyclonal antibodies produced from 2 kinds of bovine proteins, myosin and bovine serum albumin (BSA). Beef round, loin and tender loin were vacuum-packaged and subdivided into 3 groups of 1) irradiation; 2) irradiation and chilled at 4$^{\circ}C$ for 7 day; 3) irradiation and frozen at 2$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 months to observe the changes under different storage and/or distribution conditions. Irradiation was performed at 3, 5 and 7 kGy. Protein solutions prepared from the sample were tested by formatted Ci-ELISA. Detected concentrations of myosin and BSA decreased with the increased irradiation dose in all samples with different reduction rates. Myosin was more susceptible to freezing than BSA. Samples irradiated at 5 kGy or above could be differentiated from non-irradiated ones by Ci-ELISA. These results indicate that immunological assay can be used as a detection method for irradiated beef.

  • This study measured the amount of electricity consumed by the vending machines installed on campus and aim to come up with measures to address excessive consumption of electricity. We chose 10 universities located in the city of Seoul and Gyeonggi province and measured electricity consumption of 10 vending machines installed in each university. We then calculated annual electricity consumption of the machines based on previously calculated electricity consumption of 100 samples. According to the result of the calculation, it is estimated that the machines studied on consume 700 KWh a year. This amount could translate into approximately 3,000 tons of annual carbon emissions and 640 million KRW in annual electricity bills. It was also found that there is a significant difference between ordinary vending machines and machines certified for being eco-friendly and energy efficient, in terms of electric power consumption. It is expected that, if the ordinary machines are replaced with the eco-friendly and high-efficient machines, 640 KWh of electricity, 300 kg of carbon, and 61,640 KRW in electricity bills would be saved, which means 28% saving in energy, emissions and bills. In conclusion, we determined that, as one of the ways to reduce electric power consumption and carbon emissions, old vending machines on campus could be replaced with eco-friendly and high-efficient machines.

  • The perspectives on aging women's financial security during their retirement years are based on their behavior, planning, and decision-making processes during their working years. Elderly women are considered vulnerable and have a longer life expectancy, lower-income, and limited financial understanding compared to males; therefore, drastic steps need to be taken to improve their financial stability and quality of life. The current study sought to determine the most important contributors to retired women's financial health by measuring the value of four factors/variables: capability, opportunity, willingness, and biopsychosocial. This study used a mixed model approach, with qualitative analysis in the first phase involving a focus group discussion session, a pilot analysis, and quantitative analysis for phase two involving the distribution and collection of questionnaires completed by retired women. The surveys were distributed across Malaysia in five distinct zones and yielded 339 usable replies to support the theory. The outcomes of the Multiple Regression Analysis in Malaysia revealed that capability, opportunity, and biopsychosocial factors are significant predictors of retired women's financial security, whereas the willingness indicator lacked statistical significance.

  • As global climate change impacts become more apparent, countries are implementing various policies to achieve carbon neutrality that can be categorized into direct regulations and market-based indirect regulations. The latter, utilizing economic incentives, is considered more efficient in transforming corporate behavior and promoting voluntary efforts for carbon reduction. In alignment with international trends, South Korea has introduced the Emission Trading System (ETS) in 2015. Despite this, the domestic carbon market remains underdeveloped, with low ETS participation, particularly in the aquaculture sector. In order to activate external projects under the ETS, this study proposes short-term strategies including linking ETS with popular eco-friendly energy distribution projects, developing standardized monitoring techniques, and integrating carbon reduction initiatives with other support mechanisms such as direct payment programs. Long-term strategies focus on developing new methodologies for external projects, promoting the use of renewable energy, and enhancing technologies to reduce energy consumption in aquaculture operations. By implementing these strategies, the study aims to enhance the participation of the aquaculture sector in carbon reduction efforts, contributing to the overall goal of carbon neutrality.

  • This study analyzed Granger causality between power consumption and production activity in manufacturing sector, by using error correction model. It found that there exists the connection between power consumption and production activity in manufacturing sector. By reflecting the industrial characteristics, it found not only the bilateral causality (power consumption ${\leftrightarrow}$ production activity) in power non-intensive industry, high value-added industry and low value-added industry, but also one-way causality (power consumption ${\rightarrow}$ production activity) in power-intensive industry. These results imply that power demand management policy focusing on efficiency improvement is necessary primarily to minimize negative impacts on production activity, and also stable power supply system is required to meet the increase of power demand.

  • This paper empirically analyzes the effect of renewable electricity generation on the System Marginal Price (SMP) in Korea. Using an ARX-GARCHX model with hourly data from 2016 to 2020, we evaluate SMP determinants and merit order effects. As a result, we find that solar and wind power, as well as gas price and total load, play a critical role in the SMP. In particular, solar power reduces the SMP level but raises volatility during peak and off-peak periods. This result implies that SMP may fall as renewable electricity generation increases, leading to a decrease in the profitability of existing power plants and investment in renewables. On the other hand, even if the subsidy of renewable energy increases the burden on the SMP, it can be offset by the merit order effect, which lowers the SMP.

  • To efficiently reduce on-grid energy consumption, the admission control algorithm in the hybrid energy powered cellular network (HybE-Net) with base stations (BSs) powered by on-grid energy and solar energy is studied. In HybE-Net, the fluctuation of solar energy harvesting and energy consumption may result in the imbalance of solar energy utilization among BSs, i.e., some BSs may be surplus in solar energy, while others may maintain operation with on-grid energy supply. Obviously, it makes solar energy not completely useable, and on-grid energy cannot be reduced at capacity. Thus, how to control user admission to improve solar energy utilization and to reduce on-grid energy consumption is a great challenge. Motivated by this, we first model the energy flow behavior by using stochastic queue model, and dynamic energy characteristics are analyzed mathematically. Then, fuzzy logic based admission control algorithm is proposed, which comprehensively considers admission judgment parameters, e.g., transmission rate, bandwidth, energy state of BSs. Moreover, the index of solar energy utilization balancing is proposed to improve the balance of energy utilization among different BSs in the proposed algorithm. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm performs excellently in improving solar energy utilization and reducing on-grid energy consumption of the HybE-Net.

  • A nutrition survey of 128 perschool children, 4 to 6 years old, in the Saemaul Youlgok day care center, located in one uplane, overpolulated, poor area of the city of Seoul, sponsered by the Korean Red Cross Society, was undertaken between August 21 and 31, 1984, to investigate dietary and nutritional status. RESULTS: Mean values of height, weight, arm circumference, girth of chest, and head circumference ranged from 95 to 100% of KIST mean. However, 4.8~14.2% of the subjects were assessed as undernourished in terms of 'weight for height'. Mean hemoglobin vcalue was 12.1±0.7gm%, and mean hematocrit value was 38.5±2.2%; 4.1% of the subjects were proven to be anemic according to the criterion of hemoglobin established by the ICNND. Mean urinary urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio was 11.4±3.8. Regarding mean energy and nutrient intake, the following percentages had intakes below two-thirds of the 1985 RDAs: 28.8% of children, for protein; 48.8% of children, for iron; and 28.8% of children, for calcium. About 25% of children had vitamin A intake below one-third of the recommended allowance. Carbohydrate provided 71% of total energy intake; protein accounted for 13%; fat provided 16%. Energy intake was divided among breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks in a percentage ration of 19:26:21:34. The lunch, and snacks which were served at the day care center provided 36.5~79.1% of daily energy and nutrient intake. The survey clarified that the day care feding largely supplemented the inadequate dietary intakes of these young children at home. According to factor analysis of energy and nutrient intake, there were two factor groups : the first factor group, for energy, protein, carbohydrate, iron and niacin, mainly provided by grains; and the second factor group, for calcium, vitamin A, thamin, riboflavin and ascorbic acid, provided by vegetables, fruits, milk and milk products. The survey also revealed significant correlation coefficients between family factors such as family income, educational level of parents, and number of children; and dietary or nutritional status of the subjects.

  • As prices of energy resources such as oil and gas started to rise steadily in 2000, energy security has been one of the most important topics in the world. To secure more energy, most of countries which are highly dependent on imported energy resources try to occupy oversea oil or gas reserves, thereby intensifying competition for energy resources around world. Under this circumstance, we focus on independent E&P companies since they are relatively small size companies which are suitable for M&A. We analyze investment option values for these E&P companies using a real option model for depletable resources. Based on analytical model, empirical study is provided to examine rationality of investment for energy companies. The result shows sufficient profitability for independent E&P companies in both oil and gas projects in the North America during 2004 to 2008. In Particular, oil projects were more feasible than gas project due to lower price of gas and high volatility of gas price at that time.
