  • Sound absorbing materials are divided into several types according to the appearances and the characteristics. Basic mechanism of sound absorption in various sound absorbing materials is the conversion of sound energy into hat energy. Here the important elements which govern by the conversion from sound into heat depend on the type of materials. (omitted)

  • This paper presents the results of static crushing test that was conducted to characterize the energy absorption and collapse characteristics of composite box tubes. Fifteen specimens were fabricated with woven fabric prepreg using [0/90] glass/epoxy and were autoclave cured. Quasistatic compression test was performed on them. Collapse mode and energy absorption capacity vary significantly as a function of the thickness and length of a square side of composite box tube.

  • In this paper, collapse test of thin-walled structures, which are widely used in the vehicle members is carried out to observe the dependence of cross-sectional forms and materials on the absorbed energy in the viewpoint of crashworthiness. Also, specimens consist of two kinds (Al, CFRP) with various thickness. Comparisons of circular specimens are made to find characteristics of the different specimens on the absorption ability according to specimen thickness and materials.

  • In order to investigate the impact behaviors of 3-D braided glass/epoxy composites, the energy profiles and damage area were compared to the laminates of similar volume fraction and composition. The energy profiles showed different characteristics from each other which indicates they have distict energy absorption mechanisms. The image analysis on the damage projections visualized the crack propagation paths along the fiber direction.

  • The front-end side members of automobiles, such as the hat-shaped section member, absorb most of the energy during the front-end collision. The side members absorb more energy in collision if they have higher strength and stiffness, and stable folding capacity (local buckling). Using the above characteristics on energy absorption, vehicle should be designed light-weight to improve fuel combustion ratio and reduce exhaust gas. Because of their specific strength and stiffness, CFRP are currently being considered for many structural (aerospace vehicle, automobiles, trains and ships) applications due to their potential for reducing structural weight. Although CFRP members exhibit collapse modes that are significantly different from the collapse modes of metallic materials, numerous studies have shown that CFRP members can be efficient energy absorbing materials. In this study, the CFRP side members were manufactured using a uni-directional prepreg sheet of carbon/Epoxy and axial static collapse tests were performed for the members. The collapse mode and the energy absorption capability of the members were analyzed under the static load.

  • In this paper, vibration and energy absorption characteristics of a nanostructure which is composed of two embedded porous annular/circular nanoplates coupled by a viscoelastic substrate are investigated. The modified couple stress theory (MCST) and the Gurtin-Murdoch theory are applied to take into account the size and the surface effects, respectively. Furthermore, the structural damping effect is probed by the Kelvin-Voigt model and the mathematical model of the problem is developed by a new hyperbolic higher order shear deformation theory. The differential quadrature method (DQM) is employed to obtain the out-of-phase and in-phase frequencies of the structure in order to predict the dynamic response of it. The acquired results reveal that the vibration and energy absorption of the system depends on some factors such as porosity, surface stress effects, material length scale parameter, damping and spring constants of the viscoelastic foundation as well as geometrical parameters of annular/circular nanoplates. A bird's-eye view of the findings in the research paper offers a comprehensive understanding of the vibrational behavior and energy absorption capabilities of annular/circular porous nanoplates. The multidisciplinary approach and the inclusion of porosity make this study valuable for the development of innovative materials and applications in the field of nanoscience and engineering.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the collapse characteristics of widely used spot welded section members coated damping material Y1000 and to develop an analysis method for acquiring exact collapse loads and energy absorption ratio. Hat-shaped thin-walled members have the biggest energy absorbing capacity in a front-end collision. The sections were tested on quasi-static and impact loads. Specimens with two type thickness, width ratio and spot weld pitch on the flange have been tested in impact velocities(6.73n0sec and 7.54n1sec) which imitate a real-life car collision. As a result, it was developed the system for acquiring impact energy absorbing characteristics of structure united thin-walled member and damping materials.

  • Annually, the global production of construction aggregates reaches over 40 billion tons, making aggregates the largest mining sector by volume and value. Currently, the aggregate industry is shifting from sand to hard rock as a result of legislation limiting the extraction of natural sands and gravels. A major implication of this change in the aggregate industry is the need for understanding rock fragmentation and energy absorption to produce more cost-effective aggregates. In this paper, we focused on incorporating dynamic rock and soil mechanics to understand the effects of loading rate and water saturation on the rock fragmentation and energy absorption of three different sandstones (Red, Berea and Buff) with different pore sizes. Rock core samples were prepared in accordance to the ASTM standards for compressive strength testing. Saturated and dry samples were subsequently prepared and fragmented via fast and dynamic compressive strength tests. The particle size distributions of the resulting fragments were subsequently analyzed using mechanical gradation tests. Our results indicate that the rock fragment size generally decreased with increasing loading rate and water content. In addition, the fragment sizes in the larger pore size sample (Buff sandstone) were relatively smaller those in the smaller pore size sample (Red sandstone). Notably, energy absorption decreased with increased loading rate, water content and rock pore size. These results support the conclusion that rock fragment size is positively correlated with the energy absorption of rocks. In addition, the rock fragment size increases as the energy absorption increases. Thus, our data provide insightful information for improving cost-effective aggregate production methods.

  • Recently tube hydroforming technology has been one of the most important technology in automotive industry in the point of saving weight and high quality for collision accidents. In this paper, experimental studies for axial compression tests of hydroformed tubes are performed to investigate the collapse absorption characteristics. The collapse absorption abilities are discussed and compared for as-received, hydroformed, and press formed tubes.

  • Aluminum member absorbs energy by stable plastic deformation under axial loading. While CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) member absorbs energy by unstable brittle failure but its specific strength and stiffness is higher than those of aluminum member. In this study, for complement of detects and synergy effect by combination with the advantages of each member, the axial collapse tests were performed for aluminum CFRP members which are composed of aluminum members wrapped with CFRP outside aluminum circular members. Based on the respective collapse characteristics of aluminum and CFRP members, crushing behavior and energy absorption characteristics were analyzed for aluminum CRRP members which have different CFRP fiber orientation angle and thickness Test results showed that aluminum CFRP members supplemented the unstable brittle failure of CFRP members due to ductile nature of inner aluminum members. It turned out that the CFRP fiber orientation angle and thickness influence energy absorption capability together with the collapse mode of the members.
