Within the project 'e performance' supported by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) an electric vehicle, powered by two lithium-ion battery packs of different capacity and voltage has been developed. The required Energy Management System (EMS) in this system controls the current flows of both packs independently by means of two individual dc-dc converters. It acts as an intermediary between energy storage (battery management systems-BMS) and the drivetrain controller on the vehicle control unit (VCU) as well as the on-board charger. This paper describes the most important tasks of the EMS and its interfaces to the BMS and the VCU. To validate the algorithms before integrating them into the vehicle prototype, a detailed Matlab / Simulink-model was created in the project. Test procedures and results from the simulation as well as experiences and comparisons from the real car are presented at the end.
There is an increasing interest in research to help overcome the energy crisis that has been focused on energy storage applications in various parts of power systems. Energy storage systems are good at enhancing the reliability or improving the efficiency of a power system by creating a time gap between the generation and the consumption of power. As a contribution to the various applications of storage devices, this paper describes a novel algorithm that determines the power and storage capacity of selected energy storage devices in order to improve upon railroad system efficiency. The algorithm is also demonstrated by means of simulation studies for the Korean railroad lines now in service. A part of this novel algorithm includes the DC railroad powerflow algorithm that considers the mobility of railroad vehicles, which is necessary because the electric railroad system has a distinct distribution system where the location and power of vehicles are not fixed values. In order to derive a more accurate powerflow result, this algorithm has been designed to consider the rail voltage as well as the feeder voltage for calculating the vehicle voltage. By applying the resultant control scheme, the charging or discharging within a specific voltage boundary, energy savings and a substation voltage stabilization using storage devices are achieved at the same time.
This paper is concerned with the development of a new method for making, separating ice and storage floated ice by installing an evaporation plate at under-water within a storage tank. In a conventional harvest-type ice storage system, a tank saves ice by separating an ice from an installed evaporation plate, which is located above an ice storage tank as an ice storage system. Developed new harvest-type method shows good heat transfer efficiency than a convectional method. It is because the evaporation panel is directly contacted with water in a storage tank. Also, at a conventional system a circulating pump, a circulating water distributor and a piping are installed, however these components are not necessary in a new method. In this study ice storage systems are experimentally investigated to study the charge and discharge of thermal energy. The results show the applicable possibility and performance enhancement of a new type.
Efficient and durable electrical energy storage is one of the major factors limiting the wide-spread adoption of renewable energy. Since lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) were first commercialized in the early 1990s, LIBs have emerged as an important energy storage device for portable electronics. LIBs are very desirable because of their high energy storage per volume and per mass. However, LIBs with high energy and power as well as higher stability are needed for their use in a variety of energy storage applications such as MEMS devices, PDA, plug-in hybrids, all-electric vehicles and large scale utility systems. In this talk, I will discuss present energy perspective, especially energy storage and its role in renewable energy. After that I will discuss the recent advances in nanostructured materials and interface engineering that have led to the achievement of improved Li-ion batteries. Finally I will talk aboutcritical issues that need to be addressed to obtain further improvements in Li-ion batteries.

Decentralized energy production without greenhouse gas emissions from renewable energy sources despite their advantage and environmental impact suffers from the problem of intermittent and fluctuating supply depending on weather conditions. To overcome this problem, energy storage is essential to enable reliable and continuous supply of the load. Hydrogen is one of the most promising energy storage solutions because it is easily transportable and can be used as fuel or as a raw material for the production of other chemicals. In this article, we will focus on hydrogen energy storage techniques using photovoltaic systems. We will review the different types of hydrogen storage structuresfor several applications, including residential and commercial buildings, as well as industry and transportation (electric vehicles using PEFMC fuel cells).
Energy storage system is an energy reservoir which can store the electrical energy produced by the power plant into the chemical energy at the time whenever it needs to use. Accordingly, the energy storage system can help to improve the energy utilization efficiency and the stabilization of the power supply system. In addition, it can cope with the issues of carbon dioxide reduction and depletion of fossil fuel. Lead-acid battery in the secondary battery fields is one of the most developed technologies. It is also economical, reliable storage device. Therefore, the instantiation case of energy storage system using lead-acid battery was investigated for the reference studies.
There are the stirring test and drain test in the daily performance test to determine the thermal performance of a domestic solar hot water system. The drain test is a test that measures the discharge heating rate while drain the hot water from the top of the storage tank and supply the city water to the bottom of the tank. From the perspective of the user, this drain test is more effective than the stirring test. In this study, the thermal performance were compared through the drain test for a passive type and an active type domestic solar hot water systems consisting of the same storage tank and collectors. At this point, a passive type was used the horizontal storage tanks, and an active type was used vertical storage tank. In the drain test, when the hot water drained up to the reference hot water temperature, an active type which have vertical storage tank represents excellent daily performance than a passive type which have horizontal storage tank regardless of weather conditions. The reason for this is because the vertical storage tank is advantageous to thermal stratification in the tank. After the drain test, the residual heat for the horizontal storage tank was much more than the vertical storage tank, but in the next day the amount of discharged heat were less than the those of vertical storage tank neither. Thus, the solar water heating system which have horizontal storage tank should be adopted preheating control method rather than separate using control method when connected with auxiliary heat source device.

This paper focuses on the electrical modeling techniques of renewable energy sources and storage devices such as batteries, fuel cells (FCs), photovoltaic (PVs) arrays, ultra-capacitors (UCs), and flywheel energy storage systems (FESS). All of these devices are being investigated recently for their typical storage and supply capabilities for various industrial applications. Hence, these devices must be modeled precisely taking into account the concerned practical issues. An obvious advantage of electrically modeling these renewable energy sources and storage devices is the fact that they can easily be simulated in real-time in any CAD simulation program. This paper reviews several types of suitable models for each of the above-mentioned devices and the most appropriate model amongst them is presented. Furthermore, a few important applications of these devices shall also be highlighted.
Isolated power systems (IPS) are often characterized by a weak grid due to small power grids. The grid side voltage is no longer equivalent to an ideal voltage source of an infinitely big power grid. The conversion control of new energy sources, parameter perturbations as well as the load itself can easily cause the system voltage to oscillate or to become unstable. To solve this problem, increasing the energy-storage power sources is usually used to improve the reliability of a system. In order to provide support for the voltage, the energy-storage power source inverter needs an method to control the voltage source. Therefore, this paper has proposed the active damping control of a voltage source inverter (VSI) based on virtual compensation. By simplifying the VSI double closed-loop control, two feedback compensation channels have been constructed to reduce the VSI output impedance without changing the characteristics of the voltage gain of a system. This improvement allows systems to operate stably in a larger range. A frequency-domain analysis, and simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

For the large scale of electricity consumer, since the price for the electricity consumption depends on the peak power, the issue for peak power reduction have been being studied widely. Electric railway systems, which is one of the most representative large scale of loads, also has assignment to reduce the peak power since they have high peak power and low energy consumption load characteristics. In the aspect of the economic operation through reduction of peak power, this paper proposes a novel algorithm for power management system in electric railway systems using energy storage.
